Queue skipping

Well standing in my local Lidl supermarket in the queue, had about 5 things in my hand. and about third in the line. The people in front had a lot of shopping and had already put on the belt. There must have been about 10 people standing behind me. So announcement came they were opening the till right next to my one. So I quickly started making my way to the next till, this couple, who were about at the end of my queue started walking towards it too. I was in front of them. The lady said in a loud voice to her partner, thank you!!! Meaning I should have said thank you. The must have thought they were letting me in. If I had been slower they would have sneaked in. I said are you talking to me? They said you should have said thanks? I said why? I was in front of you waiting for ages, fair enough at a different till but I still got to the new till first. So rude. I’m not confrontational but I had to say something as they were so rude.

In my experience, it's a bit of a free-for-all when a new till is opened. Unless only one other till is open, anyone at the front of the others could lay claim to be being the rightful first in line - but then it's complicated because some people will already have unloaded their shopping onto the conveyor.

So, in a nutshell, yes, they were being unreasonable.

WhyCantIThinkOfAGoodOne · 27/02/2020 18:33

They were trying to be cheeky and sneak in in front of you, they didn't succeed but wanted you to say thanks? YANBU. Not the end of the world but definitely irritating!

gingeristhenewblack43 · 27/02/2020 18:49

This made me LOL, last week I was in Aldi with only one checkout being operated. A customer had their shopping on the conveyor belt being served, there was a woman in front of me who hadn't started unloading her shopping despite there being space. I was 3rd in line and a couple were behind me.

The tannoy announced they were opening till number 1 and the woman in front of me backed up so fast she shoved my trolley into me. I was too taken aback to do anything but move my trolley back to let her out. Meanwhile the female of the couple behind me starts charging to the till that is to be opened, demanding her partner follow with their trolley.

Her partner was looking at her like she was nuts and saying 'there are people in front of us in the queue'. She was standing next to the till that was going to be opened when trolley shoving lady barges past her and starts unloading her shopping.

The husband of the couple trundles over asking what the hell is wrong to his wife and they start bickering.

Obvs I'm now second in my queue and unload my shopping. The beauty of it was I was served and leaving the shop before the staff member got to the till that was opening. I smiled the biggest smile leaving the shop. Made my day Grin

EdinaMonsoon · 27/02/2020 18:49

All parties concerned were clearly trying to get to the front of the new queue first - which is fair enough. However, they were rude to expect you to somehow thank them because you happened to get there first! Be thankful this was all they said. The last time I had a similar run-in, the man concerned rammed into me with his shopping trolley to push me out of the way! Literally knocked me flying in his desperation to be in the new queue! I will admit to having a few words to say in that situation Angry The till staff were totally useless and refused to get involved even though they had actually witnessed his assault.

MissConductUS · 27/02/2020 19:10

A bit off topic, but I remember reading that in the early days of ISIS one British jihadi explained that one of the reasons he abandoned the movement was because the non-Brits were barbarians who not only stole from each other but had no proper queue discipline. Smile

The same thing happens here in the US when a new till opens up. The people at the end of the queue nip off to it before anyone closer in can do so.

Deelish75 · 27/02/2020 19:15

I think they were rude, you were already in front of them so I don’t really see what their issue is.

I had a weird “rude” situation trying to leave a supermarket just before Christmas. Supermarket was putting up display very close to the doors, people were coming in and stopping to look at display but also blocking the entrance. I let about 8 people come past me in opposite direction - only one person said “thank you”, there was a build up of people behind me so i said quite loudly “can we come out?” A woman stopped so started to walk forwards and then she told me I should have let her carry on in even though the entrance was packed and then told me I was rude.
People need to be more considerate, be prepared to give and take and just use fucking common sense. Anyway rant over!

WalkingDeadTrainee · 27/02/2020 19:19

They shouldn't have wanted a thanks. But if new till opens old positions on previous tills don't count

iheartislesofwight · 27/02/2020 19:29

someone was in the queue left her laden trolley to go and to speak to her friend 5 till queues away, [friend not queuing] her turn came but she still didn't come back to the trolley so people were going in front of her trolley to be served, i had a couple of items and she stormed back screeching like a banshee, that the check out staff could have called her when it was her turn !
entitled or what ?

GloriaMaximus · 27/02/2020 19:31

I work at Aldi and I say everyone needs to just chill the fuck out.

Drives me insane the amount of arguments between customers. We have the fire service come everyday and they wait patiently. However, I've had customers moaning because they had a call and the cashier had to move the items off the belt for them to come back for later.

You can do a full shop, pack and in your car in 30 minutes. The shop is 4 maybe 5 isles big. What on earth is an extra couple of minutes 🙈

Igotthemheavyboobs · 27/02/2020 19:32

100%

I am like a hawk, looking out for the till number to start flashing green, then I start nipping over to it before the announcement is made and everyone else tries to rush over

Igotthemheavyboobs · 27/02/2020 19:34

iheartislesofwight

I love it when stuff like that happens, makes my freaking day! Some people are on another planet!

Shopkinsdoll · 27/02/2020 19:35

I admit I was a little crabit, dinner time, and all that with a bit of pmt thrown in. It was just the way she said “thank you” to her partner and I heard him saying I know. I’m quite a quiet laid back person but that annoyed me and had to say something. I should have asked if they wanted me to kiss there feet hahah

That's why I hate those stores. Crap queuing and unfair system

Shopkinsdoll · 27/02/2020 19:42

The thing is I had got to the line before them anyway, they were still joining me in the queue when they said that in a loud voice. I know all that new till new queue. But I was standing at that other queue for about fifteen min and it wasn’t moving. That’s pretty tame to some of the other arguments Iv witnesses in shops in the past lol.

Well I shop at Aldi and I say they should sort their shit out. They haven't got any '10 items or less' checkouts so pp with a few items have to queue up with others who have a trolley load and they haven't got automated checkouts so the queues are always a nightmare.

Drives me insane the amount of arguments between customers.
Of course there'll be arguments if you pack people in like cattle. If I wasn't so hard up I would never set foot in the place.

boredboredboredboredbored · 27/02/2020 20:12

This is why I rarely shop in Lidl or aldi. I hate the checkouts, strangely gives me anxiety. I'd rather pay a bit extra for my shopping and go to Tesco.

GloriaMaximus · 27/02/2020 20:15

And that is how they keep their prices low...

DrManhattan · 27/02/2020 20:19

Serve them right with that passive aggressive attitude. Makes me well angry

EggysMom · 27/02/2020 20:21

The answer to a sarcastic "Thank you" is an equally sarcastic (but smiling sweetly) "You're welcome" Grin

Burgerandchipvan · 27/02/2020 20:23

Once a new till opens its officially a free for all. If The Purge was set in Britain, it was just be all about queue jumping and the fight to get to the newly opened till.

I let a teenage boy go in front of me at the till in Aldi because he had three things (I had about 8 trolleys worth of Mamia snacks) and the woman behind went absolutely crazy at me. That was a fun afternoon.

Ontheverge96 · 27/02/2020 20:25

Oh OP your deffo not being unreasonable! This happened to me in home bargains absolute massive cues I’m second in line and there’s people behind me, the till next to me has some sort of issue so the cheeky old twats second in line on that till jump across and as I’m literally loading my stuff jump in front and pile theirs on🙄 I also confronted them I said oh was you not in that cue their answer was yes but this ones moving quicker! I was too taken back to even respond for a minute then the only response that did slip out was ‘well that’s a bit fucking rude there’s a cue here too you know’
They were about 70, I felt soo bad🙈 massive verbal diarrhoea moment

iheartislesofwight · 27/02/2020 20:30

ontheverge even older /elderly people can be cfs. they frequently push in front to get on the bus in my area, i usually say loudly 'no need to rush folks plenty of seats'

Ontheverge96 · 27/02/2020 20:33

@iheartislesofwight tell me about it, I’m 23 so part of the ‘rude and entitled’ generation and it’s something that really bugs me I find that the elderly tend to be quite rude too!

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 27/02/2020 20:40

This is one of the reasons i love waitrose - the supervisor comes over to you specifically and says “would you like to move to this till madam” when one is about to open. So much more civilised than the free for all at lidl.
