Queue skipping

Well standing in my local Lidl supermarket in the queue, had about 5 things in my hand. and about third in the line. The people in front had a lot of shopping and had already put on the belt. There must have been about 10 people standing behind me. So announcement came they were opening the till right next to my one. So I quickly started making my way to the next till, this couple, who were about at the end of my queue started walking towards it too. I was in front of them. The lady said in a loud voice to her partner, thank you!!! Meaning I should have said thank you. The must have thought they were letting me in. If I had been slower they would have sneaked in. I said are you talking to me? They said you should have said thanks? I said why? I was in front of you waiting for ages, fair enough at a different till but I still got to the new till first. So rude. I’m not confrontational but I had to say something as they were so rude.

IME it's always a free for all anywhere when a new till opens - Tesco, Sainsbury's or Aldi etc
Never crossed my mind it was otherwise tbh

I used to work at B&M and we nearly had customers fighting over it. Once there was two full grown men arguing over it and they both said to the lass on the till that if she served the other one first then they would kick off with her so she just sat there not knowing who to serve. It was a stand off. They held the queue up for about 15 minutes and in the end neither of them got served and both got escorted out by security because they caused such a scene.

I hate people who push in when others have been waiting for ages, it really annoys me. If I opened a new till I would walk up to the person at the end of the conveyor belt who'd not yet put their shopping on and ask them to follow me so they'd get served first. Sometimes before I'd even got near my till people would just saunter from an aisle and push in and stand at my empty till so I'd tell them I would be serving the people who had already been waiting first.

A newly opened till is a free for all. That's half the skill of an Aldi shop, looking out for the fastest till or one about to open

The beauty of it was I was served and leaving the shop before the staff member got to the till that was opening.

This usually happens, the time between announcing the opening of a new till and the actual opening can be very long.

The answer to a sarcastic "Thank you" is an equally sarcastic (but smiling sweetly) "You're welcome"

No! It's a big, pouty air kiss, especially if there's a husband, or whatever, there to aim it at!
Alternatively, you can go all European and when you get a sarcastic Thank you, reply Bitteschoen, can't do umlauts.

You want to come shopping with me OP. I have an almost freaky ability to be right on cue for any new till opening. It's like they think I'm royalty or something!

I work in a large supermarket and we dont have a 10 items or less checkout either.
