Parents here are very upset about kids from Milan being at school today.

The whole point of the insurance industry is you hope you never need it or use it.

But if you do it's a good safety net against far worse possible consequences.

KoalasandRabbit · 27/02/2020 13:36

I think it means as per employers normal terms and conditions but potentially self-employed are hardest hit as no pay at all.

RedToothBrush · 27/02/2020 13:42

More worried about people "recovering" and then testing positive again than other stuff. All articles report the people have no symptoms which is good in itself and their contacts were neagative on nuclei acid tests. It's an odd one. Maybe it stays in your system for some time.

Or more simply, a flaw in the testing.

You know I would feel far happier if the China situation looked genuinely under control, if it looked like numbers were generally falling and we didn't get snippets like yesterday stating that numbers in some provinces may be 52X higher than stated and if we saw some people in China return to life as normal, and for the infection rate not to skyrocket again.

A claim which is wholly unsourced and not verifiable.

RedToothBrush · 27/02/2020 13:44

So statutory sick pay only for a lot of people.

And how does that help agency doctors and nurses?

FourTeaFallOut · 27/02/2020 13:51

But wasn't the word this morning that whole families would have to isolate together to stop the spread?

I mean, given the infection rates it will rip through a household. Is that household to remain under quarantine until the last person is recovered? You could be unable to work for far longer than just the course of one illness.

Doglover123a · 27/02/2020 13:52

@RedToothBrush thanks for reply about crufts

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 13:55

Masoumeh Ebtekar, one of Iran's vice presidents, has tested positive for coronavirus - IRNA

That's 3 in their parliament

KoalasandRabbit · 27/02/2020 13:57

Actually BBC has done a guide on sickness pay and it seems totally at companies discretion and you can be made to take it as annual leave too.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 27/02/2020 13:59

@RedToothBrush Agreed about the numbers point yesterday but it was reported in a few places so goodness knows where it started or whether it was real or not.

I stick by wanting to see some normality return in China with lockdowns easing and infection numbers not increasing dramatically . That would help the whole world I think. But they can't do it too early.
I suppose what I am asking for is hope of a future beyond CV.

Banana0pancakes · 27/02/2020 14:05

There will be a future beyond this, for a start some people are carriers and don't show symptoms.

I'd also be worried re reinfection if the tests were accurate, but there've been so many false negatives I don't think it's worth fretting over yet. More so, they're estimating 14% so 1 in 6. We've had 8 recoveries with no known reinfection, if it was true you would expect one despite that small sample size. There haven't been any cases linked back to those 8 either, which we would have definitely seen by now if it was a continuous cycle. Hope that helps, it's made me feel better Haha

HasaDigaEebowai · 27/02/2020 14:08

I've literally just been sitting the our GP surgery. The coronavirus and the flu adverts are playing on a loop. The coronavirus one lists both runny nose and sore throat as possible symptoms.

RedToothBrush · 27/02/2020 14:09

Agreed about the numbers point yesterday but it was reported in a few places so goodness knows where it started or whether it was real or not.

I saw the story and it's on my radar. Every place I saw it was a questionable source. I haven't seen anywhere reputable quoting those figures, if that makes you feel any better. Hence why I've ignore it.

I still think China's real numbers are considerably higher than they've made public, but I've not seen anything which makes me thing those figures are any more credible either.

It's a deeply unhelpful story which strikes me more as click bait than anything more.

Blueberryham · 27/02/2020 14:15

If it spreads the way we are expecting in the uk I wonder how much our numbers will be any more accurate. People say China aren’t being honest but I think maybe they just are inundated and trying their best

JuniperNet · 27/02/2020 14:15

Can I join you?

Just heard the town over from me, Buxton, now has a confirmed case! Bit freaked at hearing somewhere a stone's throw from me, named!

Hey JuniperNet you're very welcome. T'was me told you on your thread about this one - there are previous threads too but obvs things move fast. Personally I find it a very good resource, some very well informed posters here. Best of mumsnet all these lovely people.

^^this. PHE and the UK government's response is be better than any of those who stand to be 'embarrassed' over the handling of COVID-19, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's actually worse.

ifonly4 · 27/02/2020 14:29

itsmorethanthat just wondering if its worth you searching for notices issued by the airline you flew with. Easyjet put a notice out saying they were trying to trace everyone who flew with them on a certain flight (turned out to be Steve in Brighton's flight), hopefully others will do the same at this stage.

GorkyMcPorky · 27/02/2020 14:30

Is *no better.

As an aside, is anyone else with a Pixel 3 struggling with the size of the keyboard update?

GorkyMcPorky · 27/02/2020 14:30

Oh, fixed it!

Themythsweliveby · 27/02/2020 14:44

On lunch break at mo so watching WHO live streaming update. All sounds very sensible. UK and US government need to do more and
show what they are doing publicly - would like Health Minister to speak.
