That Alexa one where the mother lets her teenage daughter repeatedly thump a football against the wall, lit by the thousand suns of her security lamps at 04.40 in the dead of night.

The neighbours must be getting up a petition.

I don't think I am being unreasonable. Which adverts grind your gears?

I thought the McDonald's rubber glove ad was for Specsavers!

Some ads are completely pointless. Many posters have mentioned that weird singing baby but who knows what it's advertising? I must have seen that ad 100 times and all I think is "weird baby" . Is it a financial product? A tech thing?

That's another thing. I wonder if someone from the 1970s, or even 80s or 90s for that matter was beamed into a 2020 sitting room they'd know what three quarters of the products advertised actually were. Such a disappointing lack of actual things these days and a plethora of broadbandy or phone stuff.

ChicChicChicChiclana · 27/02/2020 18:31

I really like the McDonald's coffee ads. Shame I don't like the brand - they haven't persuaded me to go into McDonald's for a coffee. But I am pretty resistant to being sold to.

Zoidbergonthehalfshell · 27/02/2020 19:05

I must be a bit weird - I actually like the M&Ms advert. "NOW the biting makes sense..."

I agree with PPs that the Alexa one is bloody annoying. I'd be following her to her bedroom - "Er, excuse me, madam, I asked you a question..."

And the baby with the strange CGI mouth. Eurgh. No.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 27/02/2020 19:54

I forgot the Indeed one, where the teenager stomps off to her bedroom while Dad looks guilty as voiceover man says ‘So they’ve got to move. AGAIN. And all because of his JOB’. They don’t actually follow up with ‘Because the useless steaming piece of SHIT couldn’t get a job that would let his daughter stay in the home she loves’, but it’s quite heavily implied.

TabbyMumz · 27/02/2020 20:35

Yes, the kfc one..very bad timing, showing everyone licking their fingers in the height of a Corona virus scare.

Mummybear8 · 27/02/2020 20:47

I haven't RTFT but I know someone else has to be irritated about the Vicks Vaporub advert? The one where the woman is rubbing it on her child's chest (fine, he's a small child) then cuts to a scene of her rubbing it on her husbands (not fine, rub in your own Vicks - you're a grown man!) 😂

TwoZeroTwoZero · 27/02/2020 21:04

I hate any alexa ad. The one that annoyed me the most was where the dad was looking after the baby by himself and, being a useless man who knows nothing about babies, even his own, the mum sets loads of stupidly obvious reminders on the alexa thing such as, "Don't forget to feed the baby!" and then, at the end of the day, she sends a message telling him he's a wonderful dad. If he was so fucking wonderful he wouldn't need all of those sodding reminders, would he?!

The other one that irritates me is where they're camping and a cow breaks into their tent. Like you'd just pitch up in the middle of a random field somewhere and the farmer would let their cows out without warning the camping pricks off!

ArthurDentsSpaceTowel · 27/02/2020 22:04

Unobtainium I have a theory that the 'sh' for 's' thing is down to whatever sound recording 'optimisation' they use. For a while now I've been noticing the vocal fry of the M&S woman - you know the unnatural crackle of a woman talking way lower than her natural pitch, it makes me shudder - and along with that comes a weird kind of lingering over the 's' and 't' sounds that never happens in normal speech. I wonder if they mess around with the frequency and playback speeds when they run the voiceovers?

paintedfences · 27/02/2020 22:24

THIS ONE

Stupid adverts- I'll start...
icebearforpresident · 27/02/2020 22:30

It’s an old one but years ago there was one for ao.com. A woman needs to make a cake for her daughters school fair but oh no, disaster, the fridge is broken. But it’s ok because ao.com can deliver one the next day.

YOU DON’T NEED A FRIDGE TO BAKE A FUCKING CAKE!!!

(That advert still makes me irrationally angry)

BitOfFun · 28/02/2020 10:38

@MummyBear8, I've mentioned that one, drives me potty! Grin.

ginghamstarfish · 28/02/2020 11:05

Great thread! Yes, ads are in general so awful, it makes you wonder why the companies spend so much on making and broadcasting them, without ever asking normal (non-woke, non- 'on trend') people what they think beforehand.

belinda789 · 28/02/2020 12:39

@lorettalemon
You can get something that looks like a brick - it’s probably made of rubber or plastic – that you can throw at the telly any time you don’t like those bastard adverts......

belinda789 · 28/02/2020 13:53

@sueelleker
That previous Lloyds advert with the horses galloping to meet people on the beach: Polo mints is the lure for these horses and any other horses seen galloping off somewhere for no apparent reason. Never fails. (I know horses)........

Zoidbergonthehalfshell · 28/02/2020 15:06

@belinda789 - Yes, what is it about horses and Polo mints? Does it have to be Polos, or will any other generic minty sweet do? I've often wondered...

pigsDOfly · 28/02/2020 15:25

Zoidbergonthehalfshell I also like that M&M ad, always makes me chuckle.

I like the current Lloyds bank ad with the mare and foal meeting up with the other horses; it's just such a beautiful image with all those stunning black horses galloping together.

It's suspect it's computer generated and not original filmed footage but it's very beautiful.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 29/02/2020 21:38

@belinda789 is it not just the one horse filmed from different angles? Confused

Ronnie27 · 29/02/2020 21:44

DH and I saw the Alexa one with the grumpy 4am footballing girl the other night and both burst out laughing at the thought of our ds’ ever doing that. My response would a very high pitched and shrieky get-to-bed-nowwwww before you wake the neighbours / get kidnapped / catch your death / don’t get up in time for school. Switching the light on with a tolerant smile indeed! Tosh! Grin

TheGreatWave · 29/02/2020 23:17

Switching the light on with a tolerant smile indeed!

This is how "spirited DC parented without adult interference" turn out. And the parent will still smile indulgently.

In a way though the advert is a success, we are all talking about it. I still would never buy one (being Amazon) but I probably know more about it than the Google home hub that I actually do have.

StCharlotte · 01/03/2020 10:22

Actually, having all said we love the £2 trolley girl ad, what's it for?

StCharlotte · 01/03/2020 10:22

£1 - there's inflation for you!

doodlejump1980 · 01/03/2020 10:30

The tuneless whistling in the TSB advert really annoys me.

Popetthetreehugger · 01/03/2020 11:44

Another plus vote for the £1 trolly girl ! The entitled woman banging in in the early hours and putting on the music , I think the jist is parents put deposit down and all she says is something like they've done their job 🤬!

belinda789 · 01/03/2020 12:02

@Zoidbergonthehalfshell

Any mints will do. Horses will follow you about if they know yo have any. Works a treat. You will enjoy all Lloyds black horse ads now you have this info...….

Zoidbergonthehalfshell · 01/03/2020 12:32

@belinda789 Thankyou - I will watch out for the mint effect in future!
