To think if you don't give your kids pancakes

Tomorrow that is really mean!

Unless you never partake in pancake /shrove Tuesday,

If you do, and just 'can't be bothered' you're a mean mum/dad..

Have seen people who can perfectly afford it saying nah won't be bothered making kids any pancakes or giving them something sweet.

why is it mean they might have cake other days

Nekoness · 24/02/2020 23:36

“....that is really mean!”

Does that mean you’re observing Lent and you’re giving up sugary treats for the next 40 days? If yes, it’s a bit mean. Otherwise it’s a “mean” as not stuffing your face full of chocolate crap on February 14th.

SaltySeaBird · 24/02/2020 23:38

Tuesday isn’t a good day for me.

I’m on the 6.30am train. I get home 7.30pm. DH leaves the house 7.30am and back in 6.30pm.

I will make pancakes when I get in as they insist but will most likely have them at school / nursery. It will be a rush and I’ll be stressed.

I wish I could do them in the morning I really do but it’s just not possible unless we have them at 5am.

TheChosenTwo · 24/02/2020 23:39

Funnily enough I’m just sitting down after making our batter for breakfast and pudding tomorrow!
We do have pancakes pretty regularly but not during the week as I hate smelling of butter all day at work (and my hair takes about 2 hours to wash, dry and straighten in one go so no time to fix it!) but once a year on shrove Tuesday I will tie a scarf or something round my head and make the dc pancakes for breakfast Grin

dayswithaY · 24/02/2020 23:40

We've reached peak Mumsnet. Not making pancakes is mean? Unless this is a joke, you've lead a sheltered life.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 24/02/2020 23:42

Are all these people scoffing pancakes also partaking in the traditional Lenten fast?

CynthiaRothrock · 24/02/2020 23:42

My kids don't like Pancakes so why would. I bother? One doesn't even have a sweet tooth at all. Me personally I would rather take part in another shrove tuesday tradition from where I grew up and go skipping on the sea front, but I live in a different place now so would look rather odd if I did!

okiedokieme · 24/02/2020 23:43

I'm making them for me and the dog as the kids are at university Grin

Enko · 24/02/2020 23:44

ds and dd1 have specifically asked we do NOT have pancakes.. They dont like them..

DD3 said fine she will make some banana ones for dessert.

dd2 will be at uni and dh cant eat them due to his diet.. (diabetic)

So no I am not making pancakes

TheSandman · 24/02/2020 23:44

Shop bought pancakes are minging and making them is a pain in the arse.

How is making crepe pancakes a pain in the arse? Flour, eggs, milk, beat, hot fat, hissss, flip, hissss, serve.

Use a ladle to dollop out the batter. Don't bother with the tossing thing use a fish-slice. Three pans going at once. Bang them out production line. Get the kids to do the lemon and sugar an Bob's your uncle (whatever that means).

It's about the simplest thing you can make in the kitchen. Apart from porridge... and pancakes are faster.

Sodding simple.

oxoxoxoxo · 24/02/2020 23:46

Hmm, not sure..... It's a tradition linked to the Christian calendar so non-believers could get out on that angle. We always had (lemon and sugar) pancakes as children, and looked forward to it hugely - but mine have them every saturday morning so it's less of a treat.

To those who say they've never / can't make them - that is rubbish, it's easy! We started it when the DCs were very young as DS wanted to 'cook' and he had to be able to break eggs, but waiting for cakes etc to bake was too long so I came up with the idea of pancakes. Then I taught DH (who really can't cook anything) - and now I have a lie-in on Saturdays while they all do breakfast! Result....Grin

Best tip is to have a cold frying pan (small) and let the children toss some 'rejects' in that - as tossing is the best part of pancake day, but you don't want burns or wasted food.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 24/02/2020 23:46

I'll just buy them. I've tried to make them so many times and I'm just shit at it.

Oysterbabe · 24/02/2020 23:47

Are all these people scoffing pancakes also partaking in the traditional Lenten fast?

No. Because pancake day is fun and giving stuff up for lent is not. I'm happy to just do the traditions that appeal to me.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 24/02/2020 23:48

I love pancakes, we always do Pancake Day and the kids love them too - I've voted YABU though because YABR (you are being ridiculous) to think it's mean not to!
Not everyone wants them.

PickAChew · 24/02/2020 23:48

DS1 despises pancakes. Ds2 makes them at school. I haven't made them in years.

YABU and a bit daft

ChicCroissant · 24/02/2020 23:48

We occasionally have pancakes for breakfast and will still have them tomorrow as well - I may enforce DH's diet and not give him any though all the more for me

GreenTulips · 24/02/2020 23:54

Another job school has to take on because parents won’t.

DrivingMsCrazy · 24/02/2020 23:55

We've got a family funeral tomorrow so no pancakes here and you can shove your judgement where your spatula don't shine OP.

PonteLaCorona · 24/02/2020 23:57

Ugh pancakes. This is what will happen:

-DH will come home with crap pancake mix
-It will not work.
-I will waste 40 mins of my time make american pancakes for DC. Don't talk to me about damp tissue paper crepes.
-There will be a load left over that no-one will eat because deep down, everyone knows the sound of pancakes is better than the reality of pancakes (like pot noodles)
-DH will moan about the lack of "crepes"
-I will intend to make savoury gram flour pancakes (the only ones that Iike) but by the time I have washed up and thrown away 40 mins of my time, I will be too pissed off and sweaty to be bothered.
-DC and DH will be happy that pancake day has been acknowledged, even though it is IN THE BIN with my time and my chill.
-No-one will commence Lent.
-Next day, someone will moan that we have no eggs.

No.

GreenTulips · 24/02/2020 23:58

40 mins? What are you doing?

Get a bowl and a whisk add flour milk and an egg - whisk

Heat pan and start cooking 5 mins tops.

GreenTulips · 24/02/2020 23:59

Oh and I love the fact the kids all come to help set up the toppings and wait for each pancake scoffing them while the dog gets annoyed he hasn’t had one yet (it’s cooling down!) They all stand round chatting a laughing - best but

AmelieTaylor · 25/02/2020 00:01

@Reginabambina

I think that most people can’t be bothered surely?.

Say what? What makes you think that ?

Supermarkets are loaded with pancake mix, sugar, flour, eggs, lemons etc. On End Displays etc

@Lindy2

We will be having pancakes here tomorrow for dinner.I like keeping up traditions. I remember having pancakes as a child and loving Shrove Tuesday. I hope to pass that on to my children.

Me too.

if I have them for tea, are they a main or side or pudding?!

YES 🤣. Start eating & stop when you can manage another one OR when the Chef gets ‘flippers wrist’ 🤣

Oysterbabe · 25/02/2020 00:01

I don't understand how all these people apparently can't make them. Are you just super fussy in how you like them? My 4 year old can make a perfectly reasonable pancake batter with minimal assistance.

Gingaaarghpussy · 25/02/2020 00:02

Lent is the reason for pancake day. Getting rid of perishable stuff, then 40 days and 40 nights of fasting before Easter.
Fuck I feel sad, I grew up in a Christian household, that went south because of my mother.
But I only do pancakes on shrove Tuesday, even though both my boys love them.
