To think if you don't give your kids pancakes

Tomorrow that is really mean!

Unless you never partake in pancake /shrove Tuesday,

If you do, and just 'can't be bothered' you're a mean mum/dad..

Have seen people who can perfectly afford it saying nah won't be bothered making kids any pancakes or giving them something sweet.

I was talking to my DM about pancakes earlier. I've never really liked them but we always had them.

They definitely aren't breakfast. If I have them for tea, are they a main or side or pudding?!

Sofonisba · 24/02/2020 22:50

Clue's in the word 'origins' isn't it? It's cultural now as well as religious. Same way most people celebrate Christmas

I guess that's why it's call Pancake Day more than it's called Shrove Tuesday nowadays.

I vote to also change Christmas and Easter to Turkey Day and Chocolate Egg Day.

Yestermost · 24/02/2020 22:53

I made them last Tuesday as my DD convinced me it was then. Even got put of bed an hour early. Tomorrow I work a 12 hour shift so we will postpone to Wednesday!
I always loves pancake day as a child and any excuse to celebrate is worth a bit of effort if you like them.

YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer · 24/02/2020 22:53

No pancakes here. I'm American, we have Mardi Gras. Alcohol, Beads and Cajun Cooking are the norm (no alcohol for the kids obviously).

Toddlerteaplease · 24/02/2020 22:55

Completely ironic that we all buy stuff in for pancakes, and the whole point of them was to clear out the cupboards before lent begins.

JasonBrun · 24/02/2020 22:55

Eesh shame on you all you miserable bunch. I love pancake day! It's my favourite minor festival.

@peettaleetta a song for you! I don't know how to clicky link sorryyy.

FoamingAtTheUterus · 24/02/2020 22:55

ThunderboltAndLightening nope.

I don't have a very materialistic kid. 💁🏻‍♀️ He's always loved pancake Day, Halloween brings similar excitement. Christmas he can take or leave. I mean it's nice and all that, but it isn't pancake Day.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 24/02/2020 22:56

Dh is working tomorrow. I suggested we have pancakes Wednesday. Dc did not like that suggestion. They are in their 20s...
So pancakes two days running it is. ( they are making tomorrow’s)

Pipandmum · 24/02/2020 22:59

I give up alcohol for Lent and this year will also be giving up sugar (so no cakes or biscuits etc). So I'm definitely feasting on pancakes tomorrow - savoury and sweet! Mind you it's not a tradition in the States, I just learned about it when I moved here, and my mother used to go to Mass daily.

haba · 24/02/2020 23:03

DD can't eat them, DS hates them, so yeah, I'm completely mean for not giving my children something they either hate or will make them seriously ill Hmm

People who can totally afford it don't give their children something sweet, so they're mean? I'm guessing your children are those obese ones I keep reading about then?Halo

OhWellThatsJustGreat · 24/02/2020 23:05

I don't know, I can't make them to save my life, dh has a busy evening tomorrow, so ds is going to get his first taste of them at the weekend.

Apirateslifeforme · 24/02/2020 23:07

Yanbu. A small effort is all it is. Unless of course a family doesn't have the money to partake.

Apirateslifeforme · 24/02/2020 23:10

Oh God, my daughter would right fit in here. Never been too fussed by pancake day. I mean, I wouldn't turn it down, and grudgingly always do something to celebrate it with DD.
But she talks like pancake days her birthday. It's sort of sweet.
Shes planning a slap up pancake breakfast at school tomorrow, and has requested to help me make her pancakes after dinner. Apparently to have pancakes just once would not be making full use of the day.

bandasilver · 24/02/2020 23:12

My DC love pancake day, I think they prefer it to Christmas😂

TheGreatWave · 24/02/2020 23:12

Can't make them, don't like them, don't make them.

I'll tell DH that he is a dreadful parent for not making them.

Scotmummy1216 · 24/02/2020 23:13

Were not have a baby and toddler so too young to partake will enjoy when they are older.

morriseysquif · 24/02/2020 23:14

Shrove Tuesday Shrove Tuesday
When Jack went to play
His Mother made some pancakes but he didn't know the way
She fried them, she burnt them, she turned them all black
She put salt and pepper on and poisoned poor Jack

Don't be like Jack's Mum.

heidipi · 24/02/2020 23:17

I don't think we'll be doing the tomorrow but made them with the DC three times last week during half term so I think they'll survive.

(Mug of flour, mug of milk, 1 egg)

TheClitterati · 24/02/2020 23:20

My kids love pancakes. They will eat pancakes all day. Dd has 2 different types planned for the morning.

Makes me laugh every year all the pancake batter and pre made pancakes on sale for this "special day" GrinGrin

LemonFrenzy · 24/02/2020 23:25

The first pancake out of the pan is always rubbish when I make them so it's the test one! After that when the pan has got into the mood I flipping well cook gorgeous pancakes. We always have them after dinner on Pancake Day. Dcs love flipping pancakes all part of the fun. I keep meaning to try savoury ones at other times but forget. You can't beat trad lemon and sugar although we've tried cherry pie filling too! If your family like pancakes then yes you're mean as they're so easy to make and it's only once a year!

MrsBrentford · 24/02/2020 23:26

My adult children (20 and 22) and freshly moved out are returning to the fold tomoz for pancakes.

Waveysnail · 24/02/2020 23:27

If I remember/they ask otherwise no we have missed it other years and kids didnt care

GreenTulips · 24/02/2020 23:31

They are main and pudding here!

Seriously saves me cooking a dinner

One bowl one frying pan

We have lemon chocolate spread ice cream berries and (gasp) sugar

Jux · 24/02/2020 23:32

Toomuchtrouble4me · 24/02/2020 23:33
