To think if you don't give your kids pancakes

Tomorrow that is really mean!

Unless you never partake in pancake /shrove Tuesday,

If you do, and just 'can't be bothered' you're a mean mum/dad..

Have seen people who can perfectly afford it saying nah won't be bothered making kids any pancakes or giving them something sweet.

I can’t be bothered! But that’s because I only ever want one pancake and I’m pretty sure my toddler doesn’t like them. She’s been offered pancakes in the past and refused to eat them so... yeah, I can’t be bothered.

IamMoana · 25/02/2020 08:15

We always had pancake tea growing up, Mum would keep them coming 😊 such a lovely memory, I have a 5 year old who has requested crispy bacon & maple syrup on hers tonight 😂

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 25/02/2020 08:16

It's not Pancake Day, it's Jif Lemon Day! (Actually, as a lot of you probably already know, it's really Shrove Tuesday, when people used to use up all their dairy foods before Lent began.)
When our child was young and living at home, I used to make our evening meal of them on Shrove Tuesday - I would make crepes stuffed with ham and mushrooms, and spinach with bechamel sauce, and then gratineed in the oven as the main course, followed by more crepes with traditional sugar and lemon, or Nutella or maple syrup.
I loved that cartoon above of the First Pancake Group!

Bluntness100 · 25/02/2020 08:19

This can’t be a serious thread surely? Confused

my2bundles · 25/02/2020 08:19

Yes I'm really mean not giving my kid a food that he detests 😂

Curlyshabtree · 25/02/2020 08:22

It’s not our faith but we make pancakes regularly. Doubt my kids will be too distraught. We have bigger fish to fry!

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 25/02/2020 08:24

We aren't Christian (staunch atheists here). I make them sometimes and we make them at various times through the year. No one is deprived by not having them on a day which means nothing to us Confused

StCharlotte · 25/02/2020 08:27

No DC but I've actually bought a crepe pan this year after so many previous disasters. It will be hidden between pancake days.

Blackandgreenteas · 25/02/2020 08:30

Luckily Tuesday is Grandma day in our house!

Obviously I’m lucky on a number of fronts having that help, but especially good come pancake day. That said, I did get in some ready made ones if she’d rather, as well as milk, flour, eggs if she wanted to make home made, so I’m not that bad!

RoryGillmoresEvilTwin · 25/02/2020 08:32

Ds would eat pancakes every single day if he could but unfortunately I wont be picking him up from school/childminder until 7.30 this evening so no pancakes for us tonight!
To be fair he did have them last night and probably will tomorrow...

Fannia · 25/02/2020 08:35

People seem to make more of the religious side of these things now. Growing up it was just one of those traditions. People who didn't go to church were always giving things up for lent.

coffeeforone · 25/02/2020 08:44

No, I'm just a terrible parent.

I'll be home late from work tonight so they'll be asleep. One of my kids is allergic to eggs anyway.

FizzyIce · 25/02/2020 08:45

We always have pancakes on pancake day but not in the morning , we have them after dinner

FizzyIce · 25/02/2020 08:46

Oh and my dd doesn’t really even like pancakes so has a bite and that’s it.

onionface · 25/02/2020 08:46

People who think you can't do pancake day if you don't do lent, do you also not do easter eggs then since that's the breaking of the lenten fast?

NemophilistRebel · 25/02/2020 08:48

We are all out tonight so will be postponing pancakes to Wednesday instead

Can’t understand why anyone would think they are expansive, it’s store cupboard ingredients - flour milk and an egg, some sugar and lemon

Pukkatea · 25/02/2020 08:49

Oddly enough, the only people I know who don't care about pancake day are the actually religious ones who properly observe lent.

We never really bothered when I was growing up. Same for easter. Just not a big deal.

Parker231 · 25/02/2020 08:50

We like pancakes and often have them - with mushrooms and cheese is my favourite. I’m not bothered about having them today as we had them last Sunday.

We’re not religious so no reason to have them today specifically.

Arthritica · 25/02/2020 08:52

It’s the one time I treat myself to proper Canadian maple syrup to have on my pancakes. I don’t buy it often because the good stuff is expensive and DS2 would drink it if he thought he could get away with it.

I might make some lemon curd as well, that’s DS1’s favourite.

DD’s a Nutella fan.

myself2020 · 25/02/2020 08:53

Nope. no pancakes today. we’ll make them in the weekend when we actually have time. Making them today would be mean as it wouldn’t be any fun

Bluebutterfly90 · 25/02/2020 08:54

We're having pancakes but none for DS because he's 6 weeks old. Wink
Still, because we have him now it made me actually want to 'do' pancake day, because we normally don't.
I'm looking forward to being able to do things like that with him, and I really hope I can keep it up over the years.

It's not religious for us, it's just Pancake Day. Day to have Pancakes. For no reason. Grin

dottiedodah · 25/02/2020 09:08

Even from scratch ,pancakes are not exactly "difficult" to make with a hand whisk or electric mixer .I usually buy those bottles that you top up with water and shake ! well easy .If working or not able to do why not another night or W/E though?

listsandbudgets · 25/02/2020 09:12

I'll make them tonight. Wasn't worth it for breakfast today. DS was up for schoool but woke up late. DD had a dentist appointment so stayed in bed until 8.45 and DP almost never eats breakfast...

So tonight it is :)

Member984815 · 25/02/2020 09:14

I'm Irish too , we had ours yesterday evening because my husband is away today , but will definitely be having more today

PrincessBuggerPants · 25/02/2020 09:15

People seem to make more of the religious side of these things now. Growing up it was just one of those traditions.

Yes, people throwing the 'oh, but I'm an atheist, me' excuse around are just miserable and lazy. Practically and philosophically. I don't think they realise how tedious they sound.
