If you do, and just 'can't be bothered' you're a mean mum/dad..

Have seen people who can perfectly afford it saying nah won't be bothered making kids any pancakes or giving them something sweet.

Sugar is available in grotesque quantities nowadays OP.
I doubt our little darlings will be deprived of 'something sweet' for long.
Yes, a proper fry up including mushrooms and tomato would be more of a special treat for many children these days.

My child gets to make them at Scouts, where there are other children to actually eat them because he won't, win-win.

Get a bowl and a whisk add flour milk and an egg - whisk

Or get a clean jar with a screw lid, a jam jar is fine. 1/3 milk, 1/3 flour, 1 egg, screw on the lid and hand to a child to shake.

Yes, my kids look forward to it (as they do literally any occasion) and have mentioned it several times. I have had occasion where after school activities have gone on all Tuesday next though and have changed the day.

My son is only just 2. He has no idea it's Pancake Day today, and my life enough of a juggling act with his 4 week old sister without adding fresh pancakes into the mix. If he's lucky, he might get pancakes for lunch at nursery, but I'm not too bothered tbh.

All those who don't like pancakes, do you put lemon and sugar on them? I don't like them with sweet toppings but I love them with savery, cheese and bacon or just plain. The only pancakes I've liked were fluffy chocolate ones with cherries, like black forest. If I want savory, I would rather a cooked breakfast, something on toast, or an omelette.

Lent begins tomorrow, Ash Wednesday, and is a six-week penitential season leading up to the celebration of the resurrection at Easter. It mimics Christ's forty days in the wilderness at the beginning of his ministry.

Shrove Tuesday is about confessing and being forgiven (shriven) before Lent starts, and the pancakes are about using up the goodies you won't be eating in Lent, namely the eggs, sugar etc. That's roughly it. Mardi Gras, or fat Tuesday, has the same origin.

We tend not to deprive ourselves in Lent these days but we still make the pancakes!

it is a religious thing - use up the eggs and milk before Lent - hope all those who think it is cruel to NOT have pancakes will also be going to church, for Ash Wednesday, and fasting for 40 days afterwards.

I can’t make them, tried last year and they stuck to the pans so badly that it was a total fail. Probably need a new non stick pan, but have to work late tonight so won’t be at home anyway. Talk about a guilt trip though - think this thread is a bit OTT!

Really Grannys? I thought most people knew the origins of pancake day. We're not religious but still know the stories, and still like pancakes. We don't celebrate over Guy Fauks but still have fireworks, don't celebrate Jesus's birth but still have presents and a meal at Christmas....

It’s literally flour, eggs, milk and take a few mins to cook. Don’t know why people find it a hassle! Do it after school if you don’have time before.

It’s hardly child abuse. Many working parents don’t finish till late during the week so might not get chance to make pancakes, however easy they may be. I know a lot of families have them as a weekend treat anyway so will probably just do it then...

They’re only pancakes, unless you’re Christian it’s really not a massive deal to specifically have them tonight.

I don't bother with pancake day. Partially because I'm in Norway so the kids don't even know it's a thing, but mostly because if I do pancake tuesday I then can't claim it's a regular dinner option.

I'm actually surprised it's less common on mumsnet. Not having pancakes at all today for my kids would be like not dressing up for book day or any other "optional" thing that everyone does. Maybe where we live is unusual. They will all be talking about whether they have pancakes for breakfast or for pudding in their houses (barring those who dont like them...). I guess some people dont do easter eggs for primary age children but I dont know any. (We just do 2 eggs but I know some people who do tons. We wouldnt not do it at all though!)

@SwearyMcSwearySwear you're right and in theory because I can cook, you would think I could do it.
But I'm hopeless, if I get the consistency right, the temperature is wrong and visa versa. I have the same problem with omelettes and I can't make Yorkshire puddings which are the same mix as pancakes 🤦‍♀️

I can't make pancakes for shit, but ExMIL is amazing, my daughters always go to her house for them. May or may not be definitely jealous that I don't get to go any more

Nope. No time on weekday evenings so it will go past without a mention. However, I probably will make them for breakfast on Saturday, as I do every few weeks.

My twins hated them when I made them last year. One did willing eat half a lemon though 🤷‍♀️

Now one twin has an egg allergy so no pancakes for us. We will live.

Damntheman. We do pancake day and its a regular thing here 🤷‍♀️. Also eating chocolate at Easter doesnt preclude us eating it at other times... Completely understand when its not your culture or tradition though!
