Is it my fault I scratched my car?

So I’m in a situation where I scratched my car whilst driving, but wasn’t really given another choice (there was one other choice but it would’ve been a nightmare). I’m wondering who you would hold at fault for this?

I have a diagram, I’m uploading from a phone (please excuse the scribbles my toddler grabbed the pen 😂)

Is it my fault I scratched my car?

How are they going to do that ChicCroisant? Assuming, like I said that we BELIVE THE OP and she:

  • couldn't see the blue car (honestly, why would she make this up?)
  • the traffic behind her couldn't get past without her moving forward (again, why would you assume that she would make this up?)
Floralnomad · 24/02/2020 17:33

No way would I have scratched my car , I’d have backed up and manoeuvred somehow and if that pissed people off so be it .

SimonJT · 24/02/2020 17:33

They would know to reverse as the vehicle in front would have their reversing lights on and moving backwards. A reversing light is a signal light, it tells anyone around you that you are reversing so they may need to move.

You didn’t indicate right and shout “RIGHT” out the window as your indicator showed everyone your intention to turn right. A reversing light works in the same way.

Stayawayfromitsmouth · 24/02/2020 17:35

Sounds like an expensive nightmare.
Unfortunately it was your own fault. But I also see your point that you were gridlocked in.
I'd chalk it up to being more assertive with your driving. Also park further away and walk 2mins to school.

PeterPanGoesWrong · 24/02/2020 17:35

Of course it’s your fault. It’s nobody else’s! As the driver, you’re in control. You tried to squeeze through a gap you couldn’t fit.
No real harm, lesson learned.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 24/02/2020 17:36

Were you off the road though and turned into the entrance of the car park? Is it the school car park? If I really could not have reversed out I think I would have just sat, blocking the entrance until blue car driver returned or the traffic behind me eased a bit so that I could reverse out. Couldn't the car behind you proceed onwards down the road?

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 24/02/2020 17:38

I am now wondering, what would I do in such a situation if the vehicle behind was an ambulance or fire truck with lights and sirens on...

I am guessing I would indicate I haven't got the space (emergencies vehicles in emergency situations have been known to drive straight through the plonkers badly parked), but I am wondering.

SoupDragon · 24/02/2020 17:39

You didn’t indicate right and shout “RIGHT” out the window as your indicator showed everyone your intention to turn right. A reversing light works in the same way.

It's not the same though. You don't indicate right and expect everyone to get out of your way. Your reversing light doesn't mean you can just go ahead and reverse - if you need to and others will have to reverse to solve some unforeseen problem, you need to explain.

HadToWreckMyCar · 24/02/2020 17:39

Breathing a huge sigh of relief that people are getting the proper picture of it now Grin

I can totally accept that I chose to damage the car instead of cause the madness that would’ve been trying to get a whole school full of people to reverse onto a main road (that was also packed)

But I promise there was no visibility of the blue car due to the high brick walls and the position it was in (sorry if the diagram is rubbish for that). I know 100% because I went to check afterwards

For what it’s worth I sat in the car park for a good 30mins afterwards calming down and noone came to the blue car

Nicknacky · 24/02/2020 17:41

You don’t need to explain though. If the car in front of me puts its reverse lights on I would expect there is an issue up ahead and I would also reverse.

dustibooks · 24/02/2020 17:41

In this situation, I would have stopped and put the car in reverse gear so the person behind could see that I needed to reverse. I'd then give it about 30 seconds or so. If nobody reversed, then I would have turned the engine off and got out, and spoken to the person behind. After that I'd have gesticulated wildly to everybody else to move back. If that didn't work, fuck it - they'd have to wait. I wouldn't deliberately damage my car.

ShriekingBansheela · 24/02/2020 17:42

Horrible situation, but I think I would have got out and spoken to the to the people in the two cars immediately behind and asked them to budge up and try and give me enough space to manoeuvre backwards, and for them possibly to have directed me.

But it is easy to have a momentary panic when under pressure and just go for it.

Sorry about your door.

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 24/02/2020 17:43

You don't indicate right and expect everyone to get out of your way.
true, but you still expect them to slow down and not rear-end you when you turn.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 24/02/2020 17:45

Everyone would have reversed. It’s bizarre and o never believed it; but it happens!

But you didn’t feel able to, and you scratched your car trying to fit through. Everyone’s been in situations where you make a poor decision to make other people’s lives easier, surely? You’ll know for next time.

TheWordWomanIsTaken · 24/02/2020 17:46

I don't understand why the other cars couldn't go around you if you moved forward as far as you could and gestured them to go around you straight up the road.
I'm actually not sure why you are asking an aibu? Of course it is your fault, no other car was moving and you scraped down a post?

WeAllHaveWings · 24/02/2020 17:46

I would not have purposely scratched my car. I would have put it into reverse and slowly moved back, ignored the beeping and made the universally recognised shit I'm stuck hand signals (window down shoulder out, point at tiny gap and shrug 🤷🏻‍♀️, look helpless) and wait until some kind soul let me reverse.

If you chose to scratch your car, yes it is your fault.

EverythingChanges321 · 24/02/2020 17:47

I would have stopped the car, got out and asked the other drivers to back up a bit. They shouldn’t sit so close to your tail so they were at fault.
I wouldn’t have driven forwards and damaged my car.
I’d rather have an argument with the twatty drivers behind.

You need to be more confident and not be bothered by drivers attached to their horns. The people that do this are twats and deserve no headspace.

HadToWreckMyCar · 24/02/2020 17:47

Couldn't the car behind you proceed onwards down the road?

Unfortunately not without me going further forward

HadToWreckMyCar · 24/02/2020 17:49

dustibooks In hindsight this is what I wish I’d done 🙈

HadToWreckMyCar · 24/02/2020 17:51

I don't understand why the other cars couldn't go around you if you moved forward as far as you could and gestured them to go around you straight up the road

Because there wasn’t any room unless I moved forward into the post

Itsonlywords · 24/02/2020 17:51

It was your fault the car was scratched technically, but it sounds like one of those situations where plenty of people would have done the same in the situation, even those saying that they would wait for 15 cars to reverse on a main road before reversing out themselves Confused. It is likely that others leaving the car park would have struggled to get past the car parked badly by the look of it? They should have definitely parked in the lines, if there was something preventing that such as needing to get something out of the boot, a space that wasn't by the entrance and so was not causing an obstruction would have been infinitely more sensible. I hope your car isn't too badly scratched.

SonjaMorgan · 24/02/2020 17:53

Yes you are at fault. You could have stopped. It doesn't really matter if you block other drivers. You need to put safety as a priority and make sure you aren't crashing into anything at all.

squiglet111 · 24/02/2020 17:53

Was anyone else trying to turn into the same road as you? What did they do?

HadToWreckMyCar · 24/02/2020 17:54

You need to be more confident and not be bothered by drivers attached to their horns. The people that do this are twats and deserve no headspace.

Yes this is totally fair, I inconvenienced myself to save everyone else this big issue Sad

FloreanFortescue · 24/02/2020 17:55

You're definitely at fault but what a twat the blue car is!!
