What could you NOT do, even if your life depended on it?

LIGHTHEARTED

After commenting on another thread that my worst nightmare would be to have to dive underwater & resurface somewhere else. You always see it in films & they look like they’ll run out of air. Or they do it on Bushtucker Trials.

I can’t even watch it on tv / a film - gives me such anxiety. It is related to a PTSD issue, so that makes it maybe a bit more understandable, but I’m not sure I could do it, even if my life depended on it. Obviously, I’d have to try... 😬

What, if anything, would you struggle with?

Anything on I'm a celebrity get me out of here.
I'd rather die than crawl through a tunnel of rats or spiders or lice.

Also upper arm strength things but I'd just drop off after intense hand pain trying to cling on.
I'd rather not go into caves or underground either but could force self into that if life depended on it.

Not sure why people watch I'm a celebrity, or go pot holing or climbing. All three feel like torture to me.

Sleep in

Secondary school level maths

CourgettiSpaghetti · 24/02/2020 23:14

@PolloDePrimavera That's the same for me too. This weird irrational fear also applies to swimming near metal buoys that have a chain holding them to the sea floor. It gives me goose bumps thinking about it.
My other one is canals. I know they're not very deep but I couldn't jump in one even if my life depended on it.

maryqueenofpots · 24/02/2020 23:31

Get on a plane!

I was absolutely fine a few years ago and then one day it just hit and now I can't even imagine being on a plane or think about family members on a plane without feeling sick.

The idea makes me feel so awful that there isn't even a tiny part of me that WANTS to get rid of the fear! The fear has convinced me so much that planes are a terrible idea that I can't even fathom wanting to try therapy/hypnosis/anything bc the end result would be me feeling okay about going on a plane and thus would go on a plane, and I'd rather keep myself scared and therefore 'safe'!

Am I lacking in a specific pulley uppy muscle.

That is exactly the right physiological term for what you need to work on. Ask any PT in any gym.

I've thought of another - now I might be able to do it if my life truly depended on it, but I have never been able to do it thus far in life. It has come up twice...

... stand on a squirrel's head.

Disclimer - not for fun, but to put it out of its misery after my dog has caught it and not finished it off. Same with mice that I have found dying in my house after pest control put down poison. It's the beady eyes. Or that it is a sentient being. I love animals, honestly!!!!

My friends husband was terrified of flying..Would never fly..then his 60 th approached and he had a nasty health scare and they booked Tenerife
Loved it and can’t wait to go back.
I waited till we bought a house in Florida before suddenly developing a fear of flying
A Few sessions oF hypnotherapy helped me but IT was still very much determined whether it was a bumpy ride or not.
since then, I did about 40 round trips, I’ve flown to other short haul destinations but getting hit by lightning just after take off has put my anxiety right up again
We have winter sunshine holidays, I have to batten down the fear and do it anyway

TheCatsBlanket · 24/02/2020 23:52

Eat cat or dog food

bandasilver · 24/02/2020 23:54

Click with my left finger

bandasilver · 24/02/2020 23:55

That should say hand, if I could click with just one finger I’d be very impressed

Amiable · 24/02/2020 23:56

Walk up the stairs at Hampstead tube - over 300 of them. I had to do it once when they were evacuating the station and I swear never again.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 24/02/2020 23:59

Write a paragraph without making a mistake.
Touch a worm, slug or maggot. I have accidentally touched a slug and a maggot in my lifetime, and had to bleach my finders straight away. I don't know how ridiculous that is.

dayslikethese1 · 25/02/2020 00:32

Do long division: I never got it.

Couldn't cause pain to an animal.

What else? Dont think I could cage dive with sharks; I'm pretty terrified of them.

A lot of things I guess I'd do if I had to but I dont understand why people do them for fun: bungee jumping and caving go into this category. I think my worst fear is dying trapped underground in a small space or being buried alive.

flopsytheflatcat · 25/02/2020 06:55

Opening my eyes under water

Swimming in sea with fish 🤢 - once agreed to go on a diving holiday but on arrival decided that would be the best time to tell my husband that 1. I'm scared of fish and 2. I'm scared of being under water . Not my best holiday choice if I'm honest.

Heights - went to the top of the roof of the Vatican in Rome and there are lots of photos of me clinging on to the inner wall away from the roof balcony looking scared

Anything to do with worms 🤢 or frogs - I hate them.
Walking through a live animal food market in Vietnam 🤢🤢🤢🤢, I saw one too many skinned alive frogs than I care to remember 🤮

I'd never go to a swimming pool toilet without flip flops on - all that water (well, is if all water) and hair on the floor touching my feet makes me 🤮

There will be more 😬

PolloDePrimavera · 25/02/2020 07:27

@Courgetti it won't let me tag you but yes!!!!! Let's stay very far on land!!!!! I do actually love the sea but only to look at.

HeronLanyon · 25/02/2020 07:29

Stay 100% calm in open water out of sight of land/boat.
Stay 100% calm in water around whales or whale sharks
Stay calm around the edge of a reef where you can see the edge plummet and the deep dark ocean start. The ‘abyss’.
Pull myself up by my arms particularly up a rope - I am pretty fit and light and strong but that just defeats me. I’d have to just let go.
Use a compass with confidence.
Chop firewood - I just don’t have the knack - axe either sticks or bounces off. I really want to be able to do this !

FairNotFair · 25/02/2020 08:27

Seconded.

Also: swim through water full of seaweed

Numptywallice · 25/02/2020 09:00

Run, pull myself up, jump from high height, the list goes on.

Basically I would be rubbish in a crisis

Pukkatea · 25/02/2020 09:13

I can't hold my breath, so anything involving that, which is of course brilliant as it's one of the few things it's actually realistic that my life could depend on it.

QueenOfOversharing · 25/02/2020 09:44

Right. Breath holding help. There are apps to train your breath holding - for diving. I've just tried the first one I found - Freedive apnea - search "apnea" for them.

I managed an impressive... 26 seconds! It was set for 40 seconds!!!

After watching fucking Walking Dead last night, I'm full of the fear.

peaceanddove · 25/02/2020 10:01

@QueenOfOversharing, if you're being chased by the Walking Dead just don't try and hide by submersing yourself in a pool of water. It just won't work.

flowerzpowerz · 25/02/2020 10:14

Live in London, or any major city for that matter.

QueenOfOversharing · 25/02/2020 10:50

@peaceanddove haha! I reckon I'd be really good at skull smashing, but I could be lulling myself into a false sense of security... 🤔

PolloDePrimavera · 25/02/2020 15:06

Being within a few metres of a water tower. They really freak me out. There's a luxury one near me which was converted into a house and was on the telly but I don't think I could even go in it..! I don't think it's just the water issue, I'm not a fan of large, round containers, so a shipping container say, would be fine. Weird.
