AIBU?

To think the male American Airlines passenger punching the reclined seat should be charged with assault if legally possible.

I have watched the video of the man continually punching the seat occupied by Wendi Williams who had positioned it to recline. I am totally appalled that she was not given assistance when she drew the flight attendants attention to her predicament. This mans behaviour was totally unacceptable. I find it hard to fathom his behaviour and really feel a bit disturbed by it. I don't think he would have acted this way had it been a man in front... Am I being unfair in thinking this?

Please say the title of your post is a joke. You don't seriously see this as assault, unless you mean he assaulted the chair.
They are a pair of idiots and as bad as each other but no-one was assaulted.

and you know that... how? No need to play the female card when you are clearly in the wrong.

Because bullies with that sense of entitlement never pick on anyone their own size.

Not a joke, do you think he was actually intending to intimidate or hurt the chair? Or do you think the chair was the proxy to intimidate and physically assault her?

Oh for Gods sake if a seat reclines, it reclines for a reason to allow the passenger to recline it. It's that simple. You're allowed to recline. It is not rude or inconsiderate because the person behind can simple increase their space by also reclining. I don't recline usually because I prefer sitting upright, however if the person in front of me reclines I do also.

Obviously seats should be up during meal service. It is so frustrating to read people excusing this man's threatening and physical behaviour because they find it irritating if others recline. His behaviour was not acceptable. You don't physically abuse someone just because they make different choices from you.

If he had physically attacked me like that I would have physically defended myself. He was lucky she just filmed him. He comes across as a bullying childish prick and the airline should have confronted his abusive behaviour.

@SchadenfreudePersonified

She was inconsiderate but totally within her rights to do this. Sometimes one person's "rights" infringe on another person's. Then you have to be more considerate. Just because you CAN do something, doesn't mean you should.

This. She's a horrible, horrible person.

I once got a coach from London to Gloucester and the woman in front of me reclined almost flat the second we pulled out of Victoria and spent the whole journey with her head basically in my lap. Stupid selfish bastards with no consideration for anyone around them.

Totally agree he is a bullying abusive prick who has yet to defend his reprehensible behaviour.

No one needs to recline a seat on a short haul flight @Toria70 REALLY?? You can see no situation that warrants someone wanting to recline and rest on a short haul flight??? Confused

He doesn't seem aggressive or angry in the video I saw, even when he asks her what her problem is he is calm enough and I wouldn't say intimidating, just frustrated at her rudeness and returning the sentiment.

Have you ever been stuck in a chair the doesnt recline behind someone who insists on reclining. Its uncomfortable especially if you are 6'2 like DH.
One stupid woman insisted on reclining 2 seats in front of us. Man behind her was totally squashed because dh knees were touching his chair and dh seat was broken so couldn't recline. Both DH and man in front were far too polite to say anything but both were really

I expected punches, as in big ones at the seat, but still, how annoying he was in doing that. Surprised she just sat there, it would have been hugely irritating and probably upsetting.

They both behaved badly but I’ve had children treating the back of my seat more aggressively. Also the grown adults like my mil, who I do love dearly, but apparently can only get out of a plane seat by grabbing the headrest of the chair in front with both hands and hauling themselves up with the most monumental effort it feels like you’re in a fucking dentist’s chair. Naturally people who do this are frequent weeers/stretcherleggers 🙄. It is quite amazing how my mil manages to get off her sofa, out of her car, up from a dining table really without this massive upper body mobility assistance 😄.

@SiousieSoo YANBU.

I don't give a shit if people think he was right or wrong, it is an absolute fact that he would NEVER have done this, if it had been a fit young to middle aged MAN in front of him.

Easy to pick on a woman eh? Hmm

Somanysocks · 22/02/2020 18:54

She is clearly the selfish one, no way was he punching but just jiggling the seat and I don't blame him.

He should however have just stood up by the side of her seat for the rest of the flight claiming he had no room. That'd annoy her.

Just because you are able to recline a seat doesn't mean you should if it hinders other travellers.

You say about him not doing it to a man? I don't think it would have happened if a man was in front. It would have been discussed and sorted but it escalated because Karen didn't want him to eat and drink but wanted to assert her right to recline her chair.

If it was me I would have called her on it and been equally pissed off and I'm a woman.

Airplanes banned the recliner stoppers because those that could no longer recline got aggressive.

How on earth can she be wrong? Seats recline, she has the right to use the function. It was not mealtime.
If he was exceptionally tall and couldn't have anybody reclining in front of him, he should have paid for an extra legroom seat. That's what we have to do for DH, so we do it - we don't demand that random other passengers accommodate him.

Do you have magical powers or something?

Probably the same powers that you have for seeing a punch where there is none.

Both were in the wrong.

FFS! He punched her chair how can that be assault? It's stupid claims like that that diminish proper assaults. If she was that bothered she would have done what he asked and not reclined the chair.
It clearly didn't intimidate her or she wouldn't have done it. Yes he was a bit of an idiot but so was she and on top of that she's also incredibly selfish.

When my DSs were small we were on a 1 hour flight from Las Vegas to Houston. DS2 was so small his legs stuck out unless he perched on the edge of his seat. The man in front reclined and then complained DS2s legs were sticking into the seat. So I asked him very loudly if he would prefer I chopped my son's legs off. The dick complained to the crew who told him firmly tough and put up or shut up.
