I was woken up at 0645 on a SATURDAY morning by someone messaging a WhatsApp group. Nothing important or time sensitive, they said themselves they were lying awake thinking, now I'm lying awake pissed off that my sleep has been interrupted for no reason.

OP posts:

You are not one of those annoying people that have all your notifications on all the time are you? Hate the constant ping, ping, ping from people's phones.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 22/02/2020 08:28

I have all of my text messages and WhatsApps on mute (just no notifications) all the time anyway. YABU and probably won’t be back because you weren’t expecting to be told you are Grin

Ivebeentohellanditscalledikea · 22/02/2020 08:29

Use do not disturb. Shame I can't do the same for my neighbours kid who kicks a football against my wall at 6am every Saturday morning. When I questioned his parents about it they said they like a lie in on a Saturday so send him outside Angry

AJPTaylor · 22/02/2020 08:30

I have do not disturb on apart from my elderly mum number so she can always get through. Investigate your sub menu!

VeganCow · 22/02/2020 08:30

I have favourites set in my contact list, and set the do not disturb feature to allow calls and notifications come through just from favourites. Everything else is silenced.

pooopypants · 22/02/2020 08:32
  1. Mute the chat or 2. Turn off your data / wifi

Simple

As others have said - put your Do Not Disturb settings on. Not only can you exempt certain people so they can always get through, you can also set it so that if anyone rings more than once in 5 mins, it will also override the DND. I only found out about this recently but it's magic!

duvetneeded · 22/02/2020 08:36

😂😂😂 YABU. just put your WhatsApp group chat notifications on silent for the night! I live in a different time zone to my friends and family. So when I go to bed I just flick off my 4G.

When my friends back home are organizing an upcoming event, I just put that particular group chat notifications on silent until the event has passed, and normal amounts of messaging returns 😂 you can even pick to turn off the notifications for 24hrs or whatever. So it will return by itself (in case you forget).

It takes 2 seconds to do any of these options Grin

Nanna50 · 22/02/2020 08:38

I think OP must have learned to work her phone settings and muted her mumsnet notifications!

WalkingDeadTrainee · 22/02/2020 08:39

Do not disturb gives you an option. Notifications go silent, but calls still ring normally. I have it exactly for situation you are writing about. Don't want to be disturbed by messages but need to be available in emergency. You can se it as you want to.
My DND is on from 10-8.

curlsnotfrizz · 22/02/2020 08:40

turn the phone off, or set it silent or leave it in another room. You don't need you phone next to you at night time.

I never consider convenience when texting/messaging as I assume that the recipient will have the phone off or silent if the timing is not good.

BritInUS1 · 22/02/2020 08:40

What everyone else said - sort out your phone settings

Make the important people VIPs. Everything else on DND. Done.

YABU. People can message when they want. Just as others can read/reply when they want.

Toomboom · 22/02/2020 08:42

I don't ever have my mobile in my bedroom. It stays downstairs. But if you do, put do not disturb on. You can change the setting so that people you want to hear from can get through and contact you. My phone will also ring if someone has tried more than once to phone me as it could be important .

Davincitoad · 22/02/2020 08:43

Never understand this turn your phone off or mute WhatsApp? If someone wants to ring you your ringer will work!

mummy2oneandtwo · 22/02/2020 08:44

Yabu.

It's your job to ensure your phone doesn't disturb you, so put it on silent or DND.

I have WhatsApp groups with relatives in the US and Aus, messages come through at all times on night!

Topseyt · 22/02/2020 08:45

So use do not disturb! Exempt any numbers you don't want barred.

Calculus2020 · 22/02/2020 08:45

There are people who need to get hold of me urgently, I cant have my phone on silent as they wouldn't be able to get through. How had is it to not message people with your random musings until a more reasonable time?

In that case mute every chat on what's app except the ones that need to get hold of your urgently.

Seriously, help yourself on this one. It's 2020....PEOPLE TEXT ALL THE TIME 24/7 jeez

notacooldad · 22/02/2020 08:47

You can put do not disturb on except for certain people or
turn your what's app notification off at night.

I consider messages similar to letters coming through the door. Sometimes I hear them being posted, sometimes i dont but i will read them when I'm ready.

In my opinion YABU

bumblingbovine49 · 22/02/2020 08:48

*There are people who need to get hold of me urgently, I cant have my phone on silent as they wouldn't be able to get through.

1 You can exclude certain numbers from the ' silent' settings so that they get through
2 Urgent things require a phone call not a text. That is just common sense

pipnchops · 22/02/2020 08:48

Turn you phone off while you sleep? Or on silent? Or don't sleep with it next to you? Simple solutions.

TheStuffedPenguin · 22/02/2020 08:48

MUTE that group only . It's simple.

EnidBlyton · 22/02/2020 08:49

i have work whatsapps on permanent mute

echobench · 22/02/2020 08:49

Just change the group settings in WA. I have several chatty groups set to silent.
