I was woken up at 0645 on a SATURDAY morning by someone messaging a WhatsApp group. Nothing important or time sensitive, they said themselves they were lying awake thinking, now I'm lying awake pissed off that my sleep has been interrupted for no reason.

There is an option in WhatsApp settings to turn off just group notifications. You can still get alerts from individuals.

My friends are scattered around the globe in a wide range of time zones, I love that we can just all join in the conversation whenever we are able to without worrying about disturbing each other as we all use do not disturb or similar.

And also a setting within do not disturb on most phones to allow approved numbers exemption so they can make it ring with a couple of tries.

adaline · 22/02/2020 07:29

Put your phone on Do Not Disturb and set it up so calls from the people who need to contact you still get through.

I have no patience for people who moan that they're woken up by their phone - put it on silent!

User06 · 22/02/2020 07:29

I never have found notifications for WhatsApp because I get 100 a day! And my phone is always on silent overnight. Suggest you do the same.

caulkheaded · 22/02/2020 07:30

You can alter your settings on iPhones to only allow contact from certain people when it’s on do not disturb. I assume it’s the same with other phones.

Xanadu58 · 22/02/2020 07:31

I've got a work WhatsApp group on my phone and because very few of the messages involve my work pattern , I use the setting to mute them for a week . They still come through but I don't hear them . I think the mute options are 12 hours , a week or a year.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 22/02/2020 07:32

You know you can change the group settings to mute the group when you want?

I'm an early morning messager, I'm an early riser and I tend to forget what I was going to say if I don't send it!

DesLynamsMoustache · 22/02/2020 07:32

Yeah, as others have said, you can allow calls and silence other notifications and also mute WhatsApp groups, so you've only yourself to blame! I never consider the time when sending a message 🤷🏻‍♀️ It's like sending an email, pretty much.

Bluntness100 · 22/02/2020 07:32

This is a bit odd op. If someone needed you in an emergency why would they send you a what’s app message in the night? Just tell whoever those people are to call and mute your what’s app messaging like everyone else.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 22/02/2020 07:33

Just change your settings on WhatsApp,you don't have to have your phone on silent. YABU

Spudlet · 22/02/2020 07:34

My DND mode is set up so that calls from DH, my mum and preschool will come through. Nobody else.

If you look in your settings there’s a option to allow calls from your favourites, you can set people as favourites in your contacts. Assuming you have an iPhone, that is!

Doggybiccys · 22/02/2020 07:36

sorry OP general consensus is YABU.

StarlightLady · 22/02/2020 07:37

I travel a lot for work, hence different time zones. One woman’s day time is another woman’s night time.

Just change your settimgs.

RachelTension · 22/02/2020 07:39

There are ways around this but you haven't implemented them, YABU.

Incontinencesucks · 22/02/2020 07:41

Yabu. This time it was a friend watsapping, but could easily have been a cold caller, a delayed text or an app. Sort out DND.

Bikerider2020 · 22/02/2020 07:41

I think you need to learn basic phone skills OP! The old but someone may need to get hold of me urgently is easily remedied, just silence WhatsApp.

Use your early morning wisely to find out how to use your phone or you'll be having a lot more early mornings.

Soontobe60 · 22/02/2020 07:42

My phone is set so it's on DND between 10pm and 7.30am, but if someone phones me it will let the call through the second time. No one ever does!

fishonabicycle · 22/02/2020 07:43

Or leave your phone downstairs.

Xenia · 22/02/2020 07:43

I have a home number land line by my bed which the famly can use in emergencies in the night. My mobile stays downstairs and is always on silent day and night. (I also have a work landline separate number on my desk at home too!)

MooocowNZ · 22/02/2020 07:43

I'm in New Zealand, if I only message when it's both UK and NZ daytime Ive not got long to send my messages... I appreciate that is probably not the situation you're in, but really phones should be on silent/do not disturb while you're asleep.
It should be simple to set up to still allow alarms to sound and important contacts to call, even my mum managed it after I kept forgetting that my mid-afternoon is the middle of the night there!

user1483387154 · 22/02/2020 07:44

yabu there are so many ways to change your phone and app settings if you dont want to be disturbed by messages.

CaptainMyCaptain · 22/02/2020 07:44

You can mute WhatsApp notifications from individual senders. I have all my groups muted.

Abitofanexpert · 22/02/2020 07:45

Ah I remember the days 6.45 seemed early! Long behind me now... Smile

YABU OP but you live and learn. Have a look at your phone settings and you won't be disturbed again.

sandybanana · 22/02/2020 07:48

You can go on settings and silence the group you are on.

Doesn't mean your phone needs to be on silent .

I did this with one of DC class WhatsApp groups. The absolute bullshit that was coming though was driving
me nuts.

So rather than leaving the group I chose to silence it. I now can choose when to read the nonsense being written rather than my phone pinging at me every two seconds.

noodlezoodle · 22/02/2020 07:48

This is literally what Do Not Disturb was created for. Are you suggesting that people should only be able to message each other during set hours? What about people that are on shift work or are up during the night for other reasons? YABVVU.

Daftodil · 22/02/2020 07:50

You can set WhatsApp to mute alerts from group chats but ping if it from an individual. You can put do not disturb settings to allow calls from particular numbers or to allow a second call even if the first call is silenced (ie if it is an emergency the caller will ring again and get through). Lots of options. Have a play with your phone settings.
