Anything you can think off?

I will start
Going topless - men it's totally fine but women get heckled and slagged off for it

Boredbumhead · 21/02/2020 22:03

@TinyGhostWriter I'm same. When traveling I feel ok in a pub. I went to a bar in new Orleans and ordered a cocktail and felt fine. In the UK on a Friday night, I couldn't do it though.

Corna · 21/02/2020 22:14

Take up space and not move over to accommodate others on the pavement. Fine for men, women are expected to move over and generally make way for others. Men just plough on through.
Good thread on patriarchy chicken a while back.

1forsorrow · 21/02/2020 22:25

Spitting in public. Men. That isn't socially acceptable anywhere I've ever been. When I was a kid, 50s and 60s, you used to get signs on buses and public places asking people not to spit.

lljkk · 21/02/2020 22:29

I have a female cousin who can spit quite fervently. (Not at people).

Women have a lot more social freedoms than men I find. I pity men.

AgeLikeWine · 21/02/2020 22:57

Not driving. Slightly more socially acceptable for women.

Agreed. Nobody bats an eyelid at a woman who can’t drive, or is a nervous / reluctant driver. Men are expected to be able to drive, and to be able to do so confidently.

AlpineSnow · 21/02/2020 23:04

When men are bitchy it doesn't get labelled as such, unless the man is gay. When a woman is bitchy it is used as evidence that "women are bitchy"

Serin · 21/02/2020 23:14

SaraClara
Women do not find barechested men physiologically arousing
??
Speak for yourself love. I suggest you have a look at Stormzy at Glastonbury and report back.

TheMemoryLingers · 21/02/2020 23:26

Except on Mumsnet. Grin

CorianderLord · 22/02/2020 01:06

Pissing in public, obviously turned away but a woman can't cop a squat...

lostinleaves · 22/02/2020 01:17

Men

Work part time
Be a sahd
Work in low income jobs

Women

Put their career before children
Travel overseas for work
Be the highest earner

But that suits me

lostinleaves · 22/02/2020 01:19

A man's chest is not a physiologically sexual stimulant to the opposite sex

Given that most of the men who walk around topless have the physique of Stan Ogden I'm really not surprised.

CorianderLord · 22/02/2020 01:24

Really @WhoAmIToTellYou ?? I stop at pubs alone all the time...

DressingGownofDoom · 22/02/2020 01:24

'Ladies nights are 'cool and fun' '

What?! They're the absolute opposite of cool and fun. I don't know anyone who would be seen dead in the vicinity of a male stripper.

ErrolTheDragon · 22/02/2020 01:29

Very true, but the flipside is that, when swimming, men who are self-conscious about their upper bodies (flabby belly, spotty back etc) aren't allowed to cover it up.

Of course they can, rash vests aren't uncommon nowadays.Confused

FrangipaniBlue · 22/02/2020 07:14

@SellFridges the absolutely is!

In my youth I used to follow a local lower division rugby team but haven't been for years. A few years ago I started going again and took DS. I was actually asked by some of the older male supporters which of the players I was dating/fancied/was trying to bag!!!

Erm yeah, because I couldn't possibly be here for the love of the game Confused

FrangipaniBlue · 22/02/2020 07:23

Working flexibly.

If a man comes in early to leave early to pick the kids up/sports day whatever he's dad of the year. When a woman does it she's taking the piss/not working her hours.

Parental Responsibility.

When DS was little we did 50:50 school drop offs/picks/birthday parties/soft play because we both worked full time. DH was seen as hero fucking dad of the century amongst some of his friendship circle and I was apparently lucky to have him. Meanwhile most of their OHs were SAHM or only worked part time and did the lions share but they never talk about them as "mum of the century"

Magenta82 · 22/02/2020 07:43

If breasts need to be covered because they are secondary sexual characteristics why don't we have the same rules for beards or Adam's apples?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 22/02/2020 13:51

Of course they can, rash vests aren't uncommon nowadays.

Really? In indoor swimming pools? I think a man wearing a rashie along with his trunks/shorts in an indoor public baths would be potentially teased or, at the very least, people would actively assume he was self-conscious about his body. A woman's choice to wear a one-piece wouldn't even be noticed.

feelingverylazytoday · 22/02/2020 14:23

Men - do weightlifting and bulk up.
Women - developing muscle is seen as masculine by many people.
Men - can win tournaments and events without being good looking and sexy.
Women - likely to get abuse on twitter if they dare to win or achieve anything if they don't look sexy while they're doing it.
Men - have long hair
Women (or at least younger women) have short hair. Hope this one goes back to the way it used to be.

Aberfalls · 22/02/2020 14:26

I can cultivate a moustache - I”m middle aged and menopausal

[grin]@dementedma

I hear you sister

That's nothing sisters, I've started on the beard now.

YY to this. I dread pixie cuts and bobs becoming the new blue rinse and rollers. I really can't do long hair - my hair keeps dropping out of any 'do' I try (and clips etc. drop out too), I walk into things when my hair's long because my peripheral vision isn't there, and lank straight rats' tails round my face make me look like something the cat dragged in. Grin A good pixie cut can make the face come alive. Hope I'm still alive when it comes back into fashion.

BanginChoons · 22/02/2020 15:07

Single mum: Scourge on society, must be reliant on benefits, raising delinquents, should've kept her legs closed. How dare she even consider a night out, should've thought of that before she had kids!

Single dad: what an absolute hero, he does an amazing job, what a shame he had to leave his well paid employment, poor him, we must ensure he has plenty of support and help.

Porcupineinwaiting · 24/02/2020 14:43

Agree that from the late 40s onward cultivating a moustache is an equal opportunities sport. Worse luck.

Men showing a wide range of emotions (anger and aggression aside) is unacceptable in many sectors of society. Esp emotions traditionally associated with women.

Women not being kind (I dont mean unkind, just not going out of their way to be kind) is hugely penalized.

Siameasy · 24/02/2020 15:14

Agree thoroughly. This to me is the central issue in female socialisation. Everything we do must be palatable🙄
