To hate this on my worktop

We have recently been given these by the council. I appreciate that in theory it’s a great idea but hate the look of them. Anyone use anything alternative? Have no where else in my kitchen for it to go.

We have one since nearly 12-13 years and it just sits on the worktop like in most of my friend's houses. I have a small kitchen (galley style) and empty it every 2-3 days depending on what I cook.

It never bothered me looking at it.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 21/02/2020 10:40

I have also got the small green and white Addis one, it matches my other kitchen plastics and is quite small.

PixieDustt · 21/02/2020 10:41

Will it not fit next to the side of the bin?

PeterPanGoesWrong · 21/02/2020 10:43

I have a Joseph Joseph bin, I’m supposed to keep my food bin in the bottom, recycling part. Although it usually ends up on top of the bin.
I can’t stand having it on my lovely clear worktops either. In an ideal world, I’d have room in my under sink cupboard, but that’s jammed full of cleaning products too., so much so that i have a separate cupboard for laundry products.
Could you keep it next to your regular rubbish bin?

Alternatively, just use a food bin bag when preparing dinner, then drop it straight not the outside food bin once you have cleared the plates after dinner.

Under the sink (or outside the back door). Nobody would want that on their worktop! Surely no one has one on their worktop?

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 21/02/2020 10:45

Mine sits on the step ladders. I don't have room under the sink either. I would if I cleared out some of the ancient cleaning products, but juts cba really 😂

I find mine really useful, as it saves me having to go outside to the green bin every time I have food waste to dispose of.

ExpletiveDelighted · 21/02/2020 10:49

We keep ours on the counter in winter but tend to keep it out on the back step in summer as it can be smellier then. It's much easier to use when it's there on the side, even if we had room under the sink it wouldn't be as handy. No room next to the bins either. I don't even notice it's there any more, it's just part of the room like the kettle and toaster.

nononever · 21/02/2020 10:52

We have J&J Totem bin too, love it.

Tillymintsmama · 21/02/2020 10:53

well you're lucky to have the collection, our council stopped the food waste collection last year. My regular bin has to have food scraps in now. I hate it!!!

FruitorCheese · 21/02/2020 10:55

I bought a smaller white one. It sits at the end of the windowsill above the sink and isn't obtrusive at all.

jessycake · 21/02/2020 10:57

I hated mine at first , but the big bin is so much less smelly in the summer

inwood · 21/02/2020 10:59

I don't use mine. There was a thread on this the other day about why don't you use them.

My kitchen is postage stamp tiny. Absolutley no room under the sink.

I have a diabetic dog who is a major scavenger and can't eat anything apart from his specific diet so cant go by back door. No utility room.

We don't have much food waste tbh and when we did use it the foxes were forever getting in the supposedly locked down outside bins. Plus maggots in the ridiculously hot summer. And sludge that was always left behind by the bin men and had to be washed out.

ExpletiveDelighted · 21/02/2020 10:59

Yes, you are lucky to have a collection, we don't so I have to compost all ours and we had to buy the bucket..

Mosaic123 · 21/02/2020 10:59

I read about the idea of keeping a bag or lined tuperware box in your freezer and putting the scraps in there. No smell.

Southeastlondonmum2 · 21/02/2020 11:01

I keep mine in the freezer so no issues with any smells either.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 21/02/2020 11:05

I keep my small Addis one on my large kitchen windowsill with all the other crap like bottle brushes and washing up liquid, I don't really notice it and change the bag every couple of days, caddy goes in the dishwasher for cleaning.

NormaLouiseBates · 21/02/2020 11:07

I've got this one from Joseph Joseph. The one provided by our council was seriously ugly so like a PP I thought I might as well get one that's nice to look at if it's going to be on display all the time.

FizzyIce · 21/02/2020 11:09

Ours goes in the bottom of one of our cupboards , doesn’t get in the way at all and quite good at stopping any smells .
Could put it in your garden with something heavy on it if it bothers you

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 21/02/2020 11:09

We have a large plastic bowl on the worktop and the bin lives outside the backdoor. We empty the bowl regularly and rinse it out.

Tillymintsmama · 21/02/2020 11:10

Seriously; who's got room in the freezer for food scraps???!

I use the council plastic caddy on the floor, before we had food collection we had a tall ceramic caddy from Lakeland for composting. It is narrower than the council one but would look better if you wanted something for the worktop. I have a small kitchen, so there's no way I'd want to give up that much worktop space!

Pinkyyy · 21/02/2020 11:16

Sorry, but what is it?
