www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8022887/Home-Secretary-Priti-Patel-accused-bullying-creating-atmosphere-fear.html

Daily Mail link, but I'm listening to it on BBC Radio 5. It sounds as if Priti Patel is facing lots of complaints because of the way she treats people. Combine that with her politics, and she just doesn't come across very pleasantly. Can she last in her job treating people like this (assuming it is true).

I couldn't read Daily Fail comments saying how wonderful she is... it would make me feel ill. It's bad enough that 14% on the poll on this thread seemed to think she's ok Shock

Frazzled2207 · 23/02/2020 14:57

Ps that video link posted up thread is obviously edited but it's actually true that she doesn't know the difference between terrorism and counter-terrorism. Astonishing.
I'm pretty sure even the lowest grade civil servant would know this.

Roussette · 23/02/2020 15:04

Frazzled Even I know the difference! And I'm nobody

TheNewSchmoo · 23/02/2020 15:09

Be kind movement going great guns again here

Roussette · 23/02/2020 15:39

Perhaps Priti Hideous can learn to be kind....

bellinisurge · 23/02/2020 15:41

Know someone who worked with her. Badly behaved in a way a child wouldn't get away with.

DGRossetti · 23/02/2020 16:12

Seems the UKs security services agree with the MN hivemind Grin

www.thelondoneconomic.com/politics/mi5-reducing-amount-of-intelligence-they-pass-to-priti-patel-because-they-dont-trust-her/23/02/

MI5 chiefs are reducing the amount of intelligence they pass to Priti Patel because they do not have “have confidence in her abilities”.

According to reports the Home Secretary is “extremely difficult to deal with” because she does not “grasp the subtleties of intelligence”.

Security service personnel apparently regularly ‘roll their eyes’ following interventions made by Ms Patel during high level meetings.

(contd)

Yehdivvy · 23/02/2020 16:56

PP has had meetings with the Israelis hasn't she? I'm not surprised that M15 are being selective about fully briefing her with sensitive information. There is no guarantee that she wouldn't pass on information to outside agencies and governments. How can we be sure she didn't pass on information to the Israeli authorities? The meeting wasn't authorised and that's why she was dismissed, somebody like that can't be trusted.

DGRossetti · 23/02/2020 17:05

Wasn't there a story that the Donald is also missing out on top-level briefings since he's demonstrated he can't keep his mouth shut ?

Also, I can't see Boris having the confidence of the security services either.

Actually she comes over rather dim and certainly can’t debate on the hoof

Her entire solution to wrongful convictions leading to the innocent being hanged was "DNA".

It may have been "DNA innit ?", but I sort of tuned out too quickly.

Michael Portillo is a complete hypocrite. Son of Spanish immigrants. That’s not to say i don’t like his railway stuff, I do. Suggest he sticks to TV. The loveliest Tory was Matthew Paris , along with Ken Clarke and Major and Hezza. As a nation I can’t help but think what a nasty bunch of jealous twerps so many are and that’s what the Torys have played too, people who think others are doing better and needed something to blame it on, yet when you dig a bit further they won’t move, want decent paying jobs on the doorstep , can’t be arsed with getting more qualified etc— I’ve no problem with that, each to their own, but I do have an issue when they make comments like ‘I voted just to make it worse for those doing ok’ — and in the case of working class folks in run down areas voting Tory, well we shall se

Polkagirls · 23/02/2020 17:44

It is astonishing that someone in her position could repeatedly mix up the phrases terrorism and counter terrorism. Imagine a doctor repeatedly mixing up names of body parts- doesn’t inspire much confidence. Your head bone is connected to your foot bone!

FieldOfFlameAndHeather · 23/02/2020 17:47

I don't particularly care whether politicians are nice or not. I just want them to do the thing they were elected to do and do it properly.

Polkagirls · 23/02/2020 18:17

Doing your job properly can mean getting people to do what you need them to. The best way of doing that does not usually involve bullying your team. Even psychopathic leaders rely on charisma.

HenHarrier · 23/02/2020 18:49

Michael Portillo is a complete hypocrite. Son of Spanish immigrants.

Err, not exactly. Portillo's mother was Scottish, the daughter of a wealthy Kirkcaldy family. His father was an exile from Franco's fascist regime, who came to the UK to accompany children escaping the civil war. Not sure how this qualifies him as a "hypocrite"?

Frazzled2207 · 23/02/2020 23:11

@Field
Agree- but she seems completely incompetent as has been discussed

XingMing · 24/02/2020 20:23

Why does everyone want politicians to be nice? Who gives a damn if they are or aren't? Their job is to win votes (in which mode they act nice) and to get stuff done once elected. The exercise of power, even in pursuit of the common good, is going to upset lots of apple carts. Politics is the exercise of power.

SwearyMcSwearySwear · 24/02/2020 20:35

I think she’s as nasty as most of her colleagues.

yellowhammers · 24/02/2020 20:39

I think she is doing an excellent job and is being hounded out because the civil servants don't agree with her policies. Policies which, by the way, were in the manifesto and which were voted for at the recent GE.
This govt. has always said it would bring in a points based system if it was re-elected.
It was re-elected and is bringing in a points based system.

She is trying to stop terrorist being released early and is deporting non British criminals at the end of their sentences.
What is the problem with these policies.

I think there is also an element of misogyny and racism in some of these remarks and in the Home Office.
The Security Services have categorically denied withholding information from her.
Dominic Cummings needs to sort out the civil service who are only interested in themselves.

Roussette · 24/02/2020 20:52

I think there is also an element of misogyny and racism in some of these remarks and in the Home Office

What? Because she's a woman and her parents are Indian we're mysoginists and racist. What rubbish. I would be saying what I think about anyone this vile.

XingMing · 24/02/2020 20:53

Most people would prefer to live in an orderly well-regulated civil society, where crimeand criminals do not rule, where people believe violence doesn't over-power the authority of the police to enforce order, or am I deluded?. Strong policing matters, but only because it shows the wilder elements where the lines are, and at the moment, the lines are a bit too fuzzy. If anyone reading this has a wayward child, I do feel for you, but please, when the police come calling to ask where your child was at the time.. play it straight.

Floribundance · 24/02/2020 20:55

The civil service don’t care about the ideology behind the policies. That’s not their job.

ddl1 · 24/02/2020 21:05

I think that's the understatement of the century.

yellowhammers · 24/02/2020 21:11

Floribundance,
I disagree. I think the civil service care about themselves and their place on the honours list.
But they don't like the policies of this govt. And I do like them.
We do need a points based immigration system. And more police. And to deport foreign criminals.
The Conservatives were clear about these policies during campaigning for the GE.
And won a majority.

And when has anyone criticised a male politician for not being "nice"?
Why should politicians be "nice"?
They need to be hard working, efficient and carry out the policies in the manifesto.
