www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8022887/Home-Secretary-Priti-Patel-accused-bullying-creating-atmosphere-fear.html

Daily Mail link, but I'm listening to it on BBC Radio 5. It sounds as if Priti Patel is facing lots of complaints because of the way she treats people. Combine that with her politics, and she just doesn't come across very pleasantly. Can she last in her job treating people like this (assuming it is true).

What an original thought, fieldofflame, did it take you long to think of that? Never heard that before, well done.

Katharinblum · 04/03/2020 07:38

No supporter of diane abbot but she has suffered a disgusting amount of mysoginistic bordering on racist online abuse over the years. To suggest that criticism of her is shutdown on mn is ludicrous.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 04/03/2020 07:41

Oh hang on, I know exactly what would happen

I know as well

Thread would run for ages full of examples about how dreadful she was

Politics threads are full of such comments...even if it’s solely about Corbyn

ddl1 · 04/03/2020 09:39

'I wonder what would happen if I suggested that Diane Abbot was an incompetent only got where she was because she an ethnic minority female?'

People do that all the time.

Alsohuman · 04/03/2020 10:29

Usual Tory response when there’s no argument - “What about Labour ...”

As far as I’m aware Diane Abbott hasn’t bullied someone to the point where they attempt suicide.

FieldOfFlameAndHeather · 04/03/2020 10:42

Yes they do ddl1 and it gets deleted

MrHodgeymaheg · 04/03/2020 10:51

As far as I’m aware Diane Abbott hasn’t bullied someone to the point where they attempt suicide.

Well said. Whatever people think of DA and her level of competence, at least she isn't some psychopathic bully.

It is quite telling that, to get things done, you have to resort to pushing people out with bullying tactics and pressuring people to do things they believe to be wrong, and then when people push back, throwing your toys out the pram and calling everyone around you stupid and incompetent. It does sound like she is out of her depth, has no respect for other people's expertise and has no self awareness of where she might be lacking herself. She sounds like one of those terrible Apprentice candidates who are completely convinced they are far more talented than anyone else and can't accept any criticism.

Being home secretary is a very difficult job and probably one that not many people want to do. She is a poor choice for this role, but I can't see anyone else who is part of BJ's little club who would risk their careers doing this job. Too much hard work probably! I am sure she is a capable and knowledgable woman in a lot of respects, but bullying behaviour is a sign you are shit at your job and you are in the wrong industry. She is not a good leader. Good leadership is about utilising everyone's best abilities and expertise for the best outcomes. You can't do this by using pressurising or bullying tactics. Most adults with a decent amount of normal life experience know that. I think this is the problem here.

SuckingDieselFella · 04/03/2020 10:56

Diane Abbott has done much worse than bully someone but even when this is evidenced with links to reliable sources it gets deleted. In fact, an identical thread about Diane Abbott got deleted with no explanation.

Some people shout that any criticism of Diane Abbott is racist. Some people like muck-raking about Priti Patel.

They are the same people.

Go figure.

Alsohuman · 04/03/2020 11:05

Ffs this isn’t about Diane Abbott. Having said that bullying someone to the point of suicide takes some beating so I’d be very interested to know what she’s alleged to have done that’s worse.

Howdidido · 04/03/2020 11:50

I think if youd like to start a thread about Abbott then do
FFS its like saying "cancer is bad" and then people replying " well what about malaria!?!!"
If you believe Abbott is a bully and horrible person that's your prerogative. But it has nothing to do with PP being a total incompetent nasty piece of work

SilverySurfer · 04/03/2020 12:00

It's pointless starting a thread about Abbott because it will be deleted by MNHQ, just as the last one was.

Priti Patel is not going anywhere as much as the civil servants want to get rid of her, because she is doing what she was appointed to do.

FieldOfFlameAndHeather · 04/03/2020 12:01

I point Howdi it would be deleted. They’ve been deleted in the past. I’m not here to defend PP merely to point out hypocrisy and double standards on MN.

Plus this would appear to be the only place where we can safely criticise DA without being deleted, because if MNHQ are going to delete those comments they’d have to delete all similar ones about PP.

FieldOfFlameAndHeather · 04/03/2020 12:01

No point!

Clavinova · 04/03/2020 12:08

bullying someone to the point of suicide takes some beating

No actual evidence of that though (yet) - several variations on this story, also implicating a line manager and other colleagues:

"Her grievance letter alleges she had previously attempted to kill herself after reporting allegations of workplace bullying in 2014, before Patel was a minister."

"The staff member also alleges she was told the decision to dismiss her was made because Patel did not “like [her] face”, according to comments attributed to her line manager and a colleague."

"Friends of the Home Secretary claimed it was “ludicrous” to drag her into alleged bullying of a junior staff member in her private office at the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) who it is claimed took an overdose after clashing with her."

“This person at the DWP only worked for Priti for two weeks and was already in the process of quitting when Priti took over as employment minister,”

Incidentally, Labour's shadow secretary for the same department [work and pensions] and another woman, was sacked for workplace bullying in 2018 following an investigation;

"multiple complainants came forward, supported by witnesses, and that the investigation found the MP had engaged in a pattern of bullying behaviour towards her staff."

Patroclus · 04/03/2020 12:11

She should be in prison

Patroclus · 04/03/2020 12:13

amazing that tories see a thread about a WOC mp and think 'THIS IS WHERE I MUST BRING UP DIANNE ABBOT. ALL BLACK PEOPLE SAME'

FieldOfFlameAndHeather · 04/03/2020 12:39

You are deliberately issuing the point Patroclus but don’t worry, we are used to that.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 04/03/2020 12:56

Its very difficult when a thread is no longer in evidence to say exactly why it was deleted

Quite often its because its gone off topic and turned into bunfight

longwayoff · 04/03/2020 13:03

Or because untrue and libellous allegations have been made, similar to the statement made by suckingdiesel, above. You're lucky, suckingdiesel, that you can hide in anonymity or Ms Abbott might be inclined to visit a lawyer.

Inkanta · 04/03/2020 13:23

Watching her on PMQT today - she is sat next to the PM as he answers questions, and some questions by Corbyn address the bullying claims.

I find myself fascinated that she appears to be always smiling, and. I'm not sure if it is a smile or that it looks like a smile when in her lips are closed.

It's just an observation ... but if she is a bully she may be a smiling bully.

DGRossetti · 04/03/2020 13:32

I find myself fascinated that she appears to be always smiling, and. I'm not sure if it is a smile or that it looks like a smile when in her lips are closed.

It's an adviser trained perma-smirk.

www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=perma-smirk

Intended to reduce exposure to unflattering photos taken "in between" and to subconsciously assert an air of superiority over opponents in discussions. Usually deployed by male bosses, but in this case, it seems gender neutral.

The definition I linked to is 2009, so not a new thing.

Obviously there is no sincerity in it - it would be a smile otherwise.

Compare and contrast with the serene compassion the Dalai Lama (someone else I have never seen not smiling) exudes.

longwayoff · 04/03/2020 13:33

Yes, she was looking remarkably sure of herself. Guess we'll have the pleasure of her company a little longer.

Inkanta · 04/03/2020 13:33

And also my point being that smiling all the time is not a good look in serious situations. It's a condescending look.

wheresmymojo · 04/03/2020 13:34

She has the kind of smile one sees on crocodiles.

I don't expect politicians of either gender/sex to be "nice", however I do expect that they aren't utter twats.

Patel seems to be the latter.

Inkanta · 04/03/2020 13:37

Compare and contrast with the serene compassion the Dalai Lama (someone else I have never seen not smiling) exudes

Yes that' true - The Dalai Lama's smile seems sincere and kind and playful even.
