... to think that Priti Patel doesn't sound very nice?

Daily Mail link, but I'm listening to it on BBC Radio 5. It sounds as if Priti Patel is facing lots of complaints because of the way she treats people. Combine that with her politics, and she just doesn't come across very pleasantly. Can she last in her job treating people like this (assuming it is true).

I like her. A lot.
Nobody argues over how ‘nice’ male MP’s are.
I’m glad she asserts her authority in places she should have authority.
The absolute racist campaign against her not being Indian enough was on twitter the other day.
However, you can’t stand up for any Tory on mumsnet, the overwhelming majority will shoot you down, even though it’s not representative of the real world, which you could also find on all the pre election threads about nasty tories and them not winning Grin

Of course they do.

GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 28/02/2020 23:23

I'm quite happy to start a very long list of male MPs who are appalling cunts if you'd find it helpful Grin

Alsohuman · 28/02/2020 23:26

You’d be here all night.

NotTerfNorCis · 28/02/2020 23:28

She does sound horrible to be fair, both politically and personally. I'd say the same if she was a man.

FieldOfFlameAndHeather · 29/02/2020 06:53

Interesting that this thread is still going strong but an identical thread about Diane Abbott was removed immediately.

Totally! I just came to post exactly that, as below.

If this thread was about Diane Abbot it would have been deleted by now.

Funny how a brown female MP being called smug, vile, stupid, deluded etc etc and being criticised repeatedly for displaying the wrong kind of facial expressions can be left to stand with few accusations of racism when she’s a Tory. Hmm

For some reason DA seems to be Teflon coated where MN is concerned and any harsh but fair criticism of her is never allowed to stand for long. We all know MNHQ is massively biased in favour of the left. Which personally, individual they can be, I don’t give a stuff. We all know Justine’s leftie credentials. But really, MN as a site should at least try to remain politically neutral.

HelgaHere1 · 29/02/2020 07:05

In a way I have to say she sounds sensible demanding more from the police. Is it because they are spending time looking at millions of posted tweets (not saying they shouldn't but it seems to be a priority now) when so many boys are being stabbed. And the county lines stuff.
Perhaps she will, if there is not improvement in crime stats, look at decriminalising cannabis, or some other changes - she seems to have the determination to get things done.

vhs95 · 29/02/2020 07:13

@HelgaHere1. Totally agree. I'm amazed at how many people on here see her as a bully when that is exactly what they are doing with their comments. She is a breath of fresh air and if she rides roughshod over some sensibilities to make the UK a safer place to live - bring it on. If the comments on here had been about Markle they would have been shouted down as racist. Welcome to MN's world 😕

Iggly · 29/02/2020 07:33

What you actually mean is it should be okay for you to criticise DA who made mistakes yet not okay to criticise someone who wants to bring back hanging and sack people on Xmas eve.

FieldOfFlameAndHeather · 29/02/2020 07:39

I think you just proved my point Iggly

The woman is a fool, a total hypocrite, a liability and a national embarrassment. Mistakes my arse. Politicians don’t make ‘mistakes’. They either have poor judgment and a poor grasp of the things they are supposed to understand or they don’t. It’s not a question of ‘mistakes.’

FieldOfFlameAndHeather · 29/02/2020 08:01

In fact I have, several times, had my posts about DA deleted.

This would be a great thread to resurrect them actually, because to delete them and leave some of the comments about PP standing on the same thread would expose the double standards and political bias of MN and many of the posters on it.

FieldOfFlameAndHeather · 29/02/2020 08:12

So I’ll start by saying I loathe the way Diane Abbot rolls her eyes and closes them while she’s talking, and talks really slowly as though the listener is very stupid. I don’t know whether there is any justifiable reason for it, but I find it deeply patronising and it makes me dislike her hugely. She looks to me like someone who is constantly dripping with contempt for anyone who interviews her and of the questions they ask. I also think to makes her seem untrustworthy and like she might be lying or playing for thinking time.

I’ve said this before and been deleted for it. I’d like to see if this post stands and if not I’d like to know why it is any different or worse than the posters complaining about PPs ‘smirk’ and calling her character into question. After all, we are all entitled to our perceptions of our politicians’ characters and their likability, competence and trustworthiness. Why should DA be protected when others are not?

Iggly · 29/02/2020 08:13

DA isn’t a cabinet member and isn’t able to influence how the country is run.

As far as I can tell, she’s been labelled an idiot for getting some numbers wrong yet PP is painted as the poor victim by the right because.....?

If it were truly fair then you’d also criticise PP for her cock ups.

Yet, you don’t.
Why is that?

Iggly · 29/02/2020 08:15

I’ve said PP is nasty because of things she has done or said.

Not because of her smirk 🤷🏻‍♀️

You criticise DA because of how she looks.

You’re no better than those who criticise PP for her smirk - so I’m not sure what your point is.

DippyAvocado · 29/02/2020 08:16

It's very frustrating that as soon as any (extremely valid) criticism is levied at PP, posters come in to say she's being victimised because she's female or because of her ethnicity.

No, she's being criticised because she is in a high public office while being both vile and incompetent. I will (and have) also criticised Boris Johnson, Dominic Cummings, IDS and many other male politicians. She is not facing criticism because she's a woman, she's facing it because she's an awful and unpleasant person in a high profile role.

FieldOfFlameAndHeather · 29/02/2020 08:36

You mayBE Iggly. Ut others have referred repeatedly to her smirk and her expressions.

Besides which, my complaints about DA don’t merely concern her facial expressions. She’s also a hypocrite who racially stereotypes people publicly.

FieldOfFlameAndHeather · 29/02/2020 08:38

No, she's being criticised because she is in a high public office while being both vile and incompetent. I will (and have) also criticised Boris Johnson, Dominic Cummings, IDS and many other male politicians. She is not facing criticism because she's a woman, she's facing it because she's an awful and unpleasant person in a high profile role.

And that is EXACTLY what has been said repeatedly by people who criticise Diane Abbot. Yet those threads get deleted. This one hasn’t been.

FieldOfFlameAndHeather · 29/02/2020 08:39

You can try to spin it or justify it any way you like. Ut it’s a simple fact that there are double standards on MN where this is concerned.

FieldOfFlameAndHeather · 29/02/2020 08:57

And with DA it’s always racism as well as misogyny. In fact it’s seen as mainly racism by her supporters, in spite of all the overwhelming evidence to argue that she is both hypocritical and incompetent.

Iggly · 29/02/2020 09:37

And you’re doing the same to DA so you are no better 🤷🏻‍♀️

Careful in that glass house.

HenHarrier · 29/02/2020 10:03

Top Home Office civil servant Sir Philip Rutnam resigns, and intends to sue government for constructive dismissal

Now this could be interesting.

longwayoff · 29/02/2020 10:36

Yes, HenHarrier, he just said in a statement that she has lied about not briefing against him. As for you Field and Flame, as you're so desperate to have your DA remarks deleted, why not report yourself for your intemperate and I'll judged remarks?

Yahboosnubsme · 29/02/2020 10:39

If the allegations in his statement are true, she sounds horrific:

news.sky.com/story/top-home-office-civil-servant-sir-philip-rutnam-quits-and-will-sue-government-11946136

I predict they'll settle with him before it gets to court. No way do the Tories want the details of this being broadcast.

HenHarrier · 29/02/2020 10:43

The FDA union is also pursuing unfair dismissal claim for Sonia Khan, the Treasury SpAd sacked by Cummings and frogmarched out by the police:

At the time of her dismissal, the Prime Minister alone had the authority to dismiss her, so in the employment tribunal we will expect both Boris Johnson and Dominic Cummings to give evidence under oath as to the reasons for dismissal, the process they applied and the evidence they used to make that decision.

Alsohuman · 29/02/2020 10:49

To be honest if that’s all Field&Flame’s got, why bother reporting it? Talk about pathetic. And as for asserting politicians aren’t allowed to make mistakes - superhuman, are they? Every person on this planet makes mistakes ffs.

The introduction of Diane Abbott to this thread is the usual Tory response when they’ve got nothing - “What about Labour ...” is always the reply when any criticism is made of their government. Labour hasn’t been anywhere near power for a decade, the right needs to own the shit it’s voted for.
