It is the most terrible and ridiculous programme I have seen in a long, long time. It's just about interesting enough to watch for a 45min brain holiday, but my god is it written in crayon.

Also:

  • the main character is American healthcare Jesus, and his name is Max Goodwell. MAX GOOD-WELL
  • the music. Omg the music, chicka chickAA, be-bop-a-do-wop, jazzzzy drums as people stride down corridors arrrgh it's so annoying
  • the writing is SO BAD. Direct quote from 10 year old Catholic child Jimmy (yes they actually called him Jimmy) whose parents are contemplating getting a divorce so they qualify for his heart-transplant anti-rejection meds. 'But divorce is a sin! And sinning isn't cool! Shock'
  • All characters are cartoons. ESPECIALLY the most annoying one, the therapist, who has horrible hair and a neck-beard and gives me the^^ heebie jeebies

It's awful, don't watch it. But if you do come and talk to me about how terrible it is

Oh. I like it.

TooStressyTooMessy · 19/02/2020 20:38

YANBU. I lasted one and a half episodes and couldn’t bear it any longer. I usually love a medical drama Grin. I have friends who love it Confused.

ParsnipToast · 19/02/2020 20:39

Oh god I watched the whole first season while wondering why on earth I was watching it. You could see the plot coming a mile off. All the doctors were Amazing Saviours. Nobody had anything approaching an actual believable character. And yet it was weirdly watchable. I attempted the second season, but one episode in I was cringing so much I couldn’t continue.

TooStressyTooMessy · 19/02/2020 20:41

YES Parsnip, that is exactly why I dislike it.

The characters are either saviours or evil. Not much in between. As a HCP the narrative of staff as saints / saviours and not people in their own right who are just human really pisses me off.

ChocoChunk1 · 19/02/2020 20:42

It's cheesy and jumps the shark quite a lot but I like it.

paintedfences · 19/02/2020 20:48

Sorry @MonsteraCheeseplant! I like to watch it with DH when we're both knackered, and we mock it together? So I sort of like it? Grin

WalkingDeadTrainee · 19/02/2020 20:53

We are with you, OP! Gave it 5 episodes. Nope. Nah. Wtf.

solitarythoughts · 19/02/2020 20:53

YABU I loved it.

NemoRocksMyWorld · 19/02/2020 21:06

Ha! I'm a doctor, watched the first few episodes with my best friend who is a nurse. Spent a good few shifts asking each other "How can I help?" And thinking we were hilarious.

Medical dramas always make me feel rubbish because I feel like I should be "making a difference" and thinking about ethical dilemmas rather than mopping up snot and doing discharge letters 😁. However, ER is a good 90% of why I went to medical school in the first place, and quite frankly we need to dupe as many young people as possible into going into medicine (pay and conditions isn't going to do it).....so new Amsterdam might have its place!

Flummingbird · 19/02/2020 21:10

Oh you bunch of miseries - I love it! It's madly unbelievable but I don't care Grin

CigarsofthePharoahs · 19/02/2020 21:11

It's trying to be a new ER and miserably failing.
I put up with it as I was unwell and needed to binge watch something easy. The main character needed to be bopped on the nose with a newspaper and told "down boy" quite a few times imo.

HungryForSnacks · 19/02/2020 21:11

I couldn't even get through the trailer

paintedfences · 19/02/2020 21:12

Ah but @NemoRocksMyWorld, ER was glorious. It has a special place in my heart, I still remember some of the (excellent) storylines. And I had such a blazing teenage crush on Dr Carter.

This is why NA pisses me off so much, it could have been so good! And it's so bad. 😭

Glad someone posted this - I love a medical drama too so I downloaded this to give it a try. I eye-rolled my way through two episodes - I've watched 8 seasons of House and 14 and a half seasons of Greys Anatomy, totally captivated, but this seems so contrived by comparison (and yes, I see the irony in this statement).

The plot was inconsistent yet predictable (and stupidly stretched), the characters barely likeable, and the lead character is unbelievable as a medical director.

Disappointing, but still, can't love everything.

Figgygal · 19/02/2020 21:14

I watched the first 3 episodes then couldn’t bare anymore

I don’t have time to waste on totally crap tv just slightly crap tv

ParsnipToast · 19/02/2020 21:14

@paintedfences All4 have ALL of er on catch up. Every damn season. It is still brilliant.

ParsnipToast · 19/02/2020 21:15

ER is actually the only medical drama I have seen all of. I never managed to get in to Grey’s Anatomy because I bloody hated the lead character. And House was just always the same.

5BlueHydrangea · 19/02/2020 21:17

I really like it! And his name is Max Goodwin no? The divorce/pope episode was a bit odd but quite an interesting idea. Quite unrealistic esp with the running a hospital with cancer but.. it's easy and I like it! And I'm a nurse so watch loads of these sort of things.

NemoRocksMyWorld · 19/02/2020 21:18

Bloody loved ER as a teenager! Started rewatching it recently....still love it, but in a nostalgic way.
Tis true new Amsterdam is no ER - it has the crazy idealism though.
Grey's anatomy is completely mental though .....everyone ended up brain-dead. Literally no one just normal died.
House was epic. Also when you are a bit medical it's a bit like a fun quiz and you can shout wrong answers at the TV the whole time. Then when the actual diagnosis comes out, you can pretend like you knew it all along.

seven201 · 19/02/2020 21:19

I love it as it's so awful. Sometimes you just need awful. My dh refuses to watch.

SidneyPrescott · 19/02/2020 21:19

YABU. It's Goodwin and I love him.

paintedfences · 19/02/2020 21:21

You're right, it's Max Goodwin. Still, 'Max Good Win'. Really? Really really?!

That's what I love about this program. The subtlety. Grin

MyBlueMoonbeam · 19/02/2020 21:21

Bloody love it - am on season 2 - Max is ace 💖

MakeLemonade · 19/02/2020 21:23

I thought it was far fetched too and was surprised to learn it is actually based on a memoir of a former Medical Director. So whilst I’m sure it’s used artistic licence it’s all based on this guys notebooks, he was a radical MD at a public hospital, had throat cancer etc.

LBOCS2 · 19/02/2020 21:31

It's terrible. I adore it.

I have also seen all of Grey's, all of House, and am gearing up to doing all of ER - I came to it late so I think I'm short on a number of the early series-es.

I have a problem 😳
