I just don’t get the purpose of it’s much more formal and polite to say hello or even hi.

FourTeaFallOut · 19/02/2020 19:23

What? Don't change what you do based on some stuck up random on Aibu. That would be one hell of a straightjacket if you keep that shit up.

Appledeapp · 19/02/2020 19:27

FourTea I know you are right but I will feel really self conscious saying it now. I have tried in the past to use hey but it doesn't feel right.

ShakespearesSisters · 19/02/2020 19:38

Most of my WhatsApp, FB messenger and texts start with "hiya" it just sounds more friendly to friends.
People I don't know well (tradesmen for instance) would get a "hi" and "hello" would be used if I'm writing in a more formal capacity.

mbosnz · 19/02/2020 19:56

It's a hiya from me. Kiwi.

Purplecatshopaholic · 19/02/2020 19:57

What on earth is wrong with hiya - v common here in central Scotland, say it all the time

amijustparanoidorjuststoned · 19/02/2020 20:01

Gosh... get a life.

villainousbroodmare · 19/02/2020 20:04

Might get "Atsusnai" printed on a t shirt!

DrWAnker · 19/02/2020 20:05

Mornin'!
Hiya!
Alright?
'Sup?
'S happening?
All perfectly acceptable forms of addressing ones peers.
Yabu.

firesong · 19/02/2020 20:09

From SE England and I say hiya too. Maybe I'm pissing people off. Ah well.

NomDeQwerty · 19/02/2020 20:10

Iya'righ?

BilboBercow · 19/02/2020 20:22

My personal preference is a drawn out "aaawwright maaaate?"

Notimeforaname · 19/02/2020 20:33

We say "Heya" where I live.

Willow2017 · 19/02/2020 20:38

Probably best not to move to Scotland then, OP. Of course, you could always tell them how uncouth they are for using that, then they'll likely revise it to 'Hiya, then, cunt.

This was a doctor that said this to me not a friend or family member.

And?. Its just a friendly greeting whats the big deal?

Willow2017 · 19/02/2020 20:39

Ffs my 😂😂😂 vanished from under the first bit!

TheWildWoods · 19/02/2020 20:41

You'd hate it in my town then OP, everyone says 'iya up this end, we seem to have a problem with the letter "h" especially if it's at the beginning of a word.
Each to their own though ain't it? Not something I'd waste time on

DiscoDown · 19/02/2020 20:44

It was my son's first word so I clearly use it too much! I like it, I think it's friendly. It's more polite than "wotcha" or "how's it hanging".

ferrier · 19/02/2020 20:45

Always said hiya here too. SE England if that makes a difference.

Willow2017 · 19/02/2020 20:47

I know you are right but I will feel really self conscious saying it now. I have tried in the past to use hey but it doesn't feel right
99%of posters are disagreeing with op and saying they use it or other greetings and you are going to stop using it because one person's view?
Dont be daft.

User472262 · 19/02/2020 20:48

I don’t mind “hiya” when in a causal situation.

OP posts:
CoffeeRunner · 19/02/2020 20:58

Never go to work or live in Birmingham. The posh people say hiya. The others say awright bab.

PineappleCocktail · 19/02/2020 21:16

At least he didn't say 'alright @User472262, alright, hows it going' so there's that.

1Morewineplease · 19/02/2020 21:18

“Hiya” doesn’t bother me one bit.
It’s what I love about the UK.. wonderful dialects and accents.
What does bother me is a grammatically incoherent post. ( I almost daren’t mention the punctuation.)

missmouse101 · 19/02/2020 21:21

It's much better than hey, which is hideous.

YouDoYou18 · 19/02/2020 21:31

My 17 month old says hiya to everyone and honestly it’s the cutest thing so I think YABU 😂

toomuchtooold · 19/02/2020 21:34

Babies say it in Scotland. It's hilarious and really cute.
