I just don’t get the purpose of it’s much more formal and polite to say hello or even hi.

OP posts:
McCanne · 19/02/2020 17:56

My daughters first word was hiya 🥰

Rubyupbeat · 19/02/2020 17:57

Who cares how its said, you are being greeted, some people dont have that.

Really123456 · 19/02/2020 17:58

YABU miserable git 😂 I think I have more gripe with my GP who reached out to shake my hand hahaha! Especially with all this Coronavirus malarchy! ROFL 😉

KingscoteStaff · 19/02/2020 17:59

Now all I can hear is Stacey saying 'Hiya Gav!'

Thinkingabout1t · 19/02/2020 17:59

I had to smile at this thread. I wouldn't like it if people greeted me with "Fuck off and die, you scum", but anything friendly is fine by me. Too many bad things in the world to be offended by something harmless.

OkPedro · 19/02/2020 18:02

Ahem it’s HOWAYA in Dublin not howya Wink
Op my doctor greets me with Heya not Hiya.. your head would probably explode!

mccanne My daughters first word was hiya too Smile

Progress2019 · 19/02/2020 18:02

I say it, and I’m in the south east. I say it to my cat every time he walks into the room. Shit! Am I offending him?

CaptainNelson · 19/02/2020 18:03

@slartibarti
'Af'noon' of course!

GameofPhones · 19/02/2020 18:06

First word problem.

seasonalsparkler · 19/02/2020 18:07

I haven't read the entire thread, but I used to use 'hiya' as a greeting to deceive people into believing I was easy breezy and laidback. When in fact, I can be intense, moody and very complex.
So it adds balance and a "coolness". 😊

FourTeaFallOut · 19/02/2020 18:10

North East here.

Hello - I don't like you/ I don't know you

Hi - I like you enough

Hiya - I'm genuinely pleased to see you.

AmelieTaylor · 19/02/2020 18:12

Oh I shouldn’t worry. Hiya will be the least if your problems if you need a Doctor soon.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 19/02/2020 18:13

YABVU. Hi is awful and should never be used in any circumstances. Hello is only for the most formal contexts. For most situations, Hiya, Cooeee, Hey up and Wotcha are correct forms of greeting.

SkaLaLand · 19/02/2020 18:13

@Love51 are you from Nottingham by any chance?

It's all 'ey up mam' here too 😂

Glasgowgin · 19/02/2020 18:16

I must strike myself off immediately. I'm a dr (hope not the OPs!) and I'm 90% sure my usual spiel is 'hiya, in you come, have a seat, I'm Dr Gin now how can I help you today?' I'm Scottish as the user name suggests and I'd never even given it a second thought before today Blush

Gonetoget · 19/02/2020 18:16

I think older people (my age 40’s+) tend to use the Hi, Hiya greeting.
A lot of the younger people that I communicate with seem to use Hey ! to address me. I always feel like an old fart responding with Hi, but I am an old fart and set in my ways, so it’s a Hi from me.
I think Hiya doesn’t seem to come out right from my mouth and makes me sound like I’m taking the piss, or a bit of a simpleton. Maybe you’ve encountered my doppelgänger.

lilgreen · 19/02/2020 18:18

Dr Gin I’d love that. My GP unfortunately doesn’t even look up!

Sparklesocks · 19/02/2020 18:18

I honestly have never even thought about it, it strikes me as a weird thing to be annoyed by tbh!

TrippingOnSunshine · 19/02/2020 18:18

@GameofPhones
Love it!

AufderAutobahn · 19/02/2020 18:19

Oh dear, I say it a lot. It's just a bit more friendly than "hi".

BananaChocolateLump · 19/02/2020 18:20

Once again I will NOT tolerate people trying to police my language so fuck off.

BudgieHammockBananaSmuggler · 19/02/2020 18:20

Very good @GameofPhones !

OP tbh you are being a bit ridiculous, but I guess the circumstances of your visit to doctor may have affected your judgement and interpretation.

MummySharn · 19/02/2020 18:20

I say it all the timr

Jaxhog · 19/02/2020 18:22

I'm not from Wales and I use it. It isn't always appropriate, but fine amongst friends.

CSIblonde · 19/02/2020 18:22

I say hey or hi or hello. Don't see anything wrong with hiya to a friend. Probably wouldn't say it at work though, as they're incredibly nitpicking on etiquette (sigh).
