I just don’t get the purpose of it’s much more formal and polite to say hello or even hi.

OP posts:
Greenandpleasanter · 19/02/2020 17:11

Hiya from SW London.

Not a doctor though.

I like my doctors to be friendly. Why wouldn't you?

Weird

AryaStarkWolf · 19/02/2020 17:13

In my experience in Ireland (extensive but not too recent) everyone said "howya".

In Dublin maybe, we wouldn't say Howya in Cork, where I am

Greenandpleasanter · 19/02/2020 17:13

Is this Jacob Rees Mogg testing the waters for a new government initiative???

Grin
saraclara · 19/02/2020 17:17

Hi is much too abrupt for me, and makes me think I've done something wrong. Hiya is normal.

NorthEndGal · 19/02/2020 17:18

@CheshireChat thanks, it was how it popped into my mind as soon as I read the titleGrin

PixieRabbit · 19/02/2020 17:18

How distasteful. Get them struck off, forthwith.

iklboo · 19/02/2020 17:18
  • i wonder if the OP's origin is not british. may have felt this form of greeting was lacking in respect, being over familiar. there are so many variants in use now, i guess it can be a bit baffling to a non-native speaker.*

Only if they learned their English from episodes of Downton Abbey.

partofthepeanutgallery · 19/02/2020 17:22

Just awful when people greet you trying to be friendly...

Hmm
Arthritica · 19/02/2020 17:22

YABU and a bit bonkers.

Hiya is friendly.

purrswhileheeats · 19/02/2020 17:23

@MrsCobbit that made me laugh. I had a friend visit recently from NI, he wore a t shirt emblazoned with 'Atsusnai'... took me ages to get it Grin

Alsoco · 19/02/2020 17:24

I used to hate it. The past few months I’ve been using it constantly 🤷‍♀️

Forcryingoutloudwtf · 19/02/2020 17:25

I don't much care

percheron67 · 19/02/2020 17:27

Pales when compared to "Guys"!

whiskeylullaby2 · 19/02/2020 17:27

Are we talking about IRL or in emails ?

IRL. Yabu
Emails. yanbu

worriedmama16 · 19/02/2020 17:29

Oh god you'd hate me!
Standard greeting where I'm from is alright! We don't even wait for an answer!
I could never warm to "watcha" when I lived in London.

dustibooks · 19/02/2020 17:33

It's quite common on the east coast. I blame the vikings.

Smelborp · 19/02/2020 17:35

It’s a regional thing. YABU.

Lazyllama · 19/02/2020 17:36

Standard greeting where I live said to everyone you even vaguely know when you pass them in the street.

Funguy · 19/02/2020 17:51

I quite like it

user1473878824 · 19/02/2020 17:51

But why do I always need to be formal?

EuroMillionsWinner · 19/02/2020 17:51

Probably best not to move to Scotland then, OP. Of course, you could always tell them how uncouth they are for using that, then they'll likely revise it to 'Hiya, then, cunt.'

Microwavedtea · 19/02/2020 17:52

I always say Hiya, I had no idea it was so offensive!

slartibarti · 19/02/2020 17:52

Most of those I meet when dogwalking say "G'mornin".
No idea what they'd say in the afternoon as I'm not out then.

PointlessUsername · 19/02/2020 17:55

but where I'm from the greeting of choice is 'alright?!' but confusingly for some that's not a question.

I always say "Alright" & hate when people actually answer properly BlushGrin

TheMobileSiteMadeMeSignup · 19/02/2020 17:55

If I'm being really informal and in a good mood when messaging friends I go so far as to type hiyaaaa!!!!

I can't see the issue.
