Noise on trains

Flower884 · 19/02/2020 15:32

Why do parents think it’s ok to let their child listen to a children’s programme loud on a train with no earphones?

I’ve experienced this a few times now on trains and planes. They seem oblivious to the noise.

Another lady has just asked the mum to turn it down as she’s trying to work. The mums response - well my child can’t hear it!

No idea, headphones are a pretty inexpensive solution.

Fixed that for you

InOtterNews · 19/02/2020 15:34

This is why I wear noise-cancelling headphones on the train - nothing to do with train noise, all to do with other people

Flower884 · 19/02/2020 15:36

@ohnooutofdateham thanks. Yes i definitely meant to say some parents. There is another child nearby watching a programme but I can’t hear his.

Of course YANBU. Headphones are an inexpensive way to solve the issue unless there are other factors at play.

Unless you're in the quiet carraige this woman was also unreasonable. You don't assume enough quiet to work on a train.

JacquesHammer · 19/02/2020 15:38

*carriage

Whatsmyname26 · 19/02/2020 15:39

Thing is adults are noisy on trains too, if the person working was on a call that would be equally annoying. I think live and let live. If you want a quiet environment to work in the train probably isn’t the best choice tbh

Whynosnowyet · 19/02/2020 15:39

Last time I was on a train a woman I assume to be the dgm deliberately kept pulling the buggy back so the dc couldn't hold the rail. It screamed for 2 hours. Just wanted to tell her to let it hold the fucking rail you mean cow..

ohnooutofdateham · 19/02/2020 15:40

The answer is because they're selfish people. They were selfish before having children and they're still selfish after having children.

Klouise777 · 19/02/2020 15:40

Get yourself some noise cancelling headphones. I have toddler. It's very hard to keep him occupied on a train, would you rather an ipad or him running around all over you? Saying that I've experienced lots of noise issues which arent child and parent related. People talking far too loudly on their phones. People singing recently 🙄 not to mention people who play music through their phones without headphone. Stop bashing parents who are most likely just trying to get through a train journey themselves with tantrums and child running around. Do you genuinely think they want to listen to it too or just trying anything to keep them occupied for half hour

ohnooutofdateham · 19/02/2020 15:41

@Klouise777 use headphones or have it on silent. It's not hard (yes I'm a mother too and do regular long journeys with small children)

TulipCat · 19/02/2020 15:42

It isn't specific to parents, not sure why you have singled them out? Lots of antisocial people do this, it is really inconsiderate. Ditto headphones that don't actually stop others from hearing their noise.

ohnooutofdateham · 19/02/2020 15:42

I also find toys or chatting to them quietly about what you can see through the window works with a screen as an emergency back up.

Flower884 · 19/02/2020 15:43

Generally I agree that if the other lady wanted to work then she should have booked the quite carriage. General chit chat is fine in my opinion but there is something disrespectful in watching a tv programme really loud. It would be like someone playing music without headphones.

Trains are full of inconsiderate people. I go nowhere now without my noise-cancelling headphones. Best money I ever spent.

GCAcademic · 19/02/2020 15:45

Oh, and I don't bother with the quiet carriage either, because people are equally inconsiderate there, and it is even more annoying.

Flower884 · 19/02/2020 15:46

@TulipCat I singled parents out in this case as that is what I’m experiencing at the moment. I equally get frustrated with people talking really loud on phones or music without headphones.

Have you tried to keep headphones on a 20 month old?! If you have please do share your wisdom!!?? I'm not saying it's right and of course noise on trains is annoying but so are other things. Trains are noisy. When I travel alone I use headphones myself as I can't stand the noise but when travelling with kids you'll use anyhhing to just keep them sitting safely in a seat

Flower884 · 19/02/2020 15:48

@Klouise777 it doesn’t have to be iPad or running around. You could use headphones or talk to your child.

Flower884 · 19/02/2020 15:50

@Klouise777 I can imagine it’s difficult to keep head phones on an under 2 year old.

Klouise777 · 19/02/2020 15:50

@ohnooutofdateham sorry replied above. Of course I'll use headphones when he's old enough to understand. I don't actually do it often, quite often if we do travel the ipad is my last resort and it's not often loud and certainly more acceptable than a crying whiny toddler. The point I was making is that lots of things are annoying on trains, I also use them a lot. When I travel along I use noise cancelling headphones. I do just wish people wouldn't people bash all the time. How do we know that mother hadn't been up all night with children, exhuusted, travelling miles and just wanted 5 mins of peace while children watched ipad? Maybe some people should stop moaning at everyone else and ask if she wanted some help?

Abraid2 · 19/02/2020 15:50

Why can’t your toddler use the headphones? Why don’t you read to him!

ohnooutofdateham · 19/02/2020 15:52

@Klouise777 if your child won't wear headphones you put it on silent. Show them they can hear it through the headphones but no sound without the headphones. They'll wear them after a while.

Flower884 · 19/02/2020 15:52

@Klouise777 I get that maybe the mum was having a difficult time. But I’m this case the child is about 7. Also I only posted due to the mother’s response being “well my child can’t hear it”. If she had said “I’m so sorry I’m having a really hard time” I wouldn’t have posted at all.

A crying toddler is actually less irritating to me than listening to noise through an iPad.
