Noise on trains

Flower884 · 19/02/2020 15:32

Why do parents think it’s ok to let their child listen to a children’s programme loud on a train with no earphones?

I’ve experienced this a few times now on trains and planes. They seem oblivious to the noise.

Another lady has just asked the mum to turn it down as she’s trying to work. The mums response - well my child can’t hear it!

Things i find more annoying than kids watching an iPad:
Noisy eaters (esp. combined with a rustling crisp packet)
People humming/singing
People bashing away importantly on their laptop
Other people's music
People talking loudly
Basically people.

catsandlavender · 19/02/2020 18:23

Ffs I voted YABU. I meant YANBU. Headphones exist for a reason.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 19/02/2020 18:46

But OP if a crying baby doesn’t annoy you then I conclude noise is subjective. I make a decision on my child and our environment and the day we are having as to when to use screens- stop being so judgemental.

BeardedMum · 19/02/2020 18:48

I hate all noise on my commute. I am tired and just want to sit and read my book thank you very much.

ADJ1151 · 19/02/2020 18:51

If in the situation I would always encourage my children to wear headphones but then again imo a child sitting watching tv on the iPad out loud is probably still better than them getting bored and restles!

My two are nuggets for turning up the iPad. Not in public but at home. I turn it down and they just turn it back. Maybe the mum was fighting a losing a battle with it!

Flower884 · 19/02/2020 19:10

@hoik what do you mean parents can’t win. People judge parents who use tablets all the time. But your other side was “bring activities the kids get bored of” - who judges parents for this?

@OnlyFoolsnMothers I’m not being judgemental. Like I have already said I’m not actually against screens to entertain children if the parents need a break or whatever as long as they use headphones in public places. The difference between a crying baby and an iPad is that a baby cat rally help crying but an iPad can be silenced. Also an iPad is a horrible tinny noise with a squeaky children’s voices talking nonsense and is very repetitive. Also a baby isn’t selfish. A parent in this particular scenario is being selfish.

I just bring lots for them to do including children’s earphones.

Yes, so do I. I’m saying I would not remove the tablet + headphones from the arsenal of Stuff To Entertain Children On Trains just because some people get all tutty about children on tablets.

Flower884 · 19/02/2020 19:19

@goldenomber agreed neither would I. I would bring a variety of things to entertain including an iPad and headphones.

All these posters whinging about toddlers watching a cartoon...do teenagers playing music out their phones annoy you too? If so, I bet you wouldn't dare confront them.

why on earth wouldn't we? it's actually easier to tell a teenager to turn it down, than an entitled mother. They are much less confrontational.
Reasonable people don't make noise in the first place.

JosefKeller · 19/02/2020 19:38

I don't see why peppa pig on low is any more annoying than a self important business man with a booming voice or a group of giggling teenage girls? You're in public...you'll hear stuff.

it's not a competition on who can be the rudest or most anti-social. There's just no need to add to the zoo. The fact that someone else is ridiculously annoying doesn't give you the right to become a nuisance too.

Witchend · 19/02/2020 19:42

Once I was on a train when a lady got on the other end of the carriage listening to something on her phone so loud that I could hear every word.
Very shortly afterwards someone tapped her on the knee and offered her some headphones. "Thank you," she replied. "I'd forgotten mine, and I didn't know what to do."
Next to me the chap muttered "What about switching it off?"
Grin (and the whole carriage applauded... no, not really. There were a few smirks between us)

Happyhats2 · 19/02/2020 20:55

I'm sorry but my daughter has a condition which means finding headphones to fit is impossible. I really wish people wouldn't assume they know the ins and outs of other people's lives.
So "inexpensive" or not headphones won't work for everyone.

whyamidoingthis · 19/02/2020 21:07

@Happyhats2 - I'm sorry but my daughter has a condition which means finding headphones to fit is impossible.

Fair enough, but if that is the case, turn the sound off. If she's older, she could use subtitles. If she's not able to read yet, I'm sure there are plenty of things, such as games, she could do without volume, on a device.

If these options don't work, use something else to amuse her but please don't inflict loud device noise on everyone else.

Vulpine · 19/02/2020 21:28

Happyhats - can she colour?

Rosiejim · 19/02/2020 21:39

happyhats so everyone else has to sit an listen to some screeching cartoon bullshit? Nope. On silent please.

eurochick · 19/02/2020 21:44

I can't believe some people are defending small children using tablets with the sound on. Headphones or no Peppa Pig. Even a young toddler will get that message if you are consistent. You just need to parent the child!

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 19/02/2020 21:58

A parent in this particular scenario is being selfish sure in this specific scenario if very loud they are. My point is a very low volumed screen can be quieter than an average conversation between two people on a train. I know my child would have screamed down the rush hour train and disturbed many people thrashing about trying to get out of her buggy, the mild sounded CBeebies was actually quieter for the masses in that carriage.

StoneofDestiny · 19/02/2020 22:02

happyhats there are loads of ways to entertain kids without a loud i.pad/phone everybody else has to suffer. Not hard to think what others did before electronic devices were so commonplace.

That said, anybody, adult or child making excessive noise to the detriment of everybody else's comfort needs challenging.

Unhomme · 19/02/2020 22:02

Going against the grain but I don't get too upset about noise on a train. Its not a library.

Happyhats2 · 19/02/2020 23:20

I'm not saying my child uses her iPad on loud, but if she wants to then she can... And believe me if she's on her iPad then I've exhausted all other avenues of entertainment so it actually benefits other passengers because she is still sat in her seat. I personally find people talking excessively loud on mobile phones, eating and making a mess or taking up a seat for their luggage annoying but it's 30 mins out if your day. Take a breath and think before judging and assuming the world revolves around you and your peace.

JosefKeller · 19/02/2020 23:37

Take a breath and think before judging and assuming the world revolves around you and your peace.

THAT should go into the definition of CF, brilliant Grin

Arseit · 19/02/2020 23:37

So by that token Happyhats you’d be happy with me sitting next to your daughter blasting Guns N’Roses out of my phone, because I want to, so I can.

StoneofDestiny · 20/02/2020 06:06

I'm not saying my child uses her iPad on loud, but if she wants to then she can
it’s 30 mins out of your day

Something wrong if a child cannot be occupied for 30 mins without the use of a loud iPad.

Underhisi · 20/02/2020 06:15

My child cannot tolerate headphones so Peppa is on silent. Although he can't tolerate public transport either so Peppa wouldn't be happening at all there.
