To call the hotel and let them know we are sick?

Blondie1092 · 17/02/2020 10:14

Myself and my husband, along with another couple who we are good friends with went to a hotel on Saturday night for their "valentines deal". We had a 5 course meal shortly after we arrived and hung about the hotel for drinks that evening, nothing too mad, all very civilised. We got up yesterday morning, had breakfast and went home.
One of us became very ill on the way home. I thought it was a hangover and we all laughed because none of us were actually drunk.
Last night I started to fall very ill and didn't sleep much. Then this morning all hell broke loose (I'm talking about my stomach an bowels TMI but hey can't beat around the bush). I'm lying in bed shivering yet sweating 😓
My husband rang me to ask if I'll collect him from work as he is also the same.
He rang the other couple to check on them and they're both off work today because they're sick.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm thinking we have ate something that has caused this.
Should I ring the hotel to inform them about this? Or just power through and forget the whole thing every happened? What would you do?

@Parkandride yes Noma Grin it was in the national news, they gave about 90 people in total food poisoning over 4-5 days. It was an unwell employee that handled and infected the food - and infected other staff - who then in turn handled and infected the food.

BIWI · 17/02/2020 20:12

@Blondie1092 Agree with PP - what on earth are you thinking talking about going back to work?!

You're both ill, and merit time off - never mind that if it does turn out to be norovirus, you risk spreading that to other people.

Stay at home tomorrow!

Blondie1092 · 17/02/2020 20:23

Never thought about the fact if it's a bug I could be spreading it tomorrow in work 😬
Just really disappointed with how the hotel have handled it today, all I wanted was a quick chat with the manager. Not to go all guns blazing throwing accusations etc.
I've been driving myself crazy today just sitting about! 😫

Def need to speak to them whether it's food poisoning or not you almost certainly picked up something at the hotel.
Am surprised they are not taking it seriously.

FWIW years ago, probably around 1984, my parents (and presumably some others) got very ill from some prawns on a BA flight. I remember as my elderly dgf had to be shipped in to look after me. I didn't get Ill as I didn't eat prawns aged 6 or whatever I was.
Anyway after complaining they got an extremely apologetic letter, some huge flowers and also a voucher. Point being, sometimes companies take these things very seriously and do what they can to make things right.

ineedaholidaynow · 17/02/2020 21:00

Food poisoning can be contagious too depending on what caused it, so don't go into work.

ChidiAnagonye · 17/02/2020 21:05

You should wait 48 hours after you’re free of symptoms before you go in to work.

GabsAlot · 17/02/2020 22:27

sound slike their fobbing you off now-theyve had their chance

justasking111 · 17/02/2020 22:53

If the hotel are fobbing you off they are probably tearing around having a deep clean, checking the dates on all the food, checking temps of fridges and generally getting frazzled anticipating a check in the near future. This is why you should call in EH because they want to see things as they are not how they will be after prior warning.

NomDeDieu · 18/02/2020 09:49

I suspect someone else has already reported an issue. Maybe one if the guests actually staying at the hotel.

Even then, their reaction is bad sad makes them look even more guilty.

ginghamstarfish · 18/02/2020 11:24

Contact the hotel via Facebook, publicly, asking why the manager has not returned your call on this urgent matter .... I'm sure you'll get a response soon!

mnthrowaway202020 · 18/02/2020 11:39

Do they know why you want to talk to the manager? If the management haven’t dealt with this sort of complaint before, I’m assuming they immediately got on the phone to their insurance company after your first call to seek legal advice. Hence why they haven’t contacted you back yet.🙄

I would definitely recommend that all 4 of you see your GP - particularly a phone consultation in case you have a bug. I know you don’t want to make a claim but your medical records are still important evidence. They may be able to prescribe over the phone if necessary too.

Sparkletastic · 18/02/2020 11:50

Yes to EHO. Don't bother with hotel.

it is good that the airline did apologise, It isn’t about flowers and apologies, it’s about keeping the public safe. If there is any possibility that a commercial catering place is spreading infection / has caused food poisoning it needs to be investigated to put it right.

As has been suggested many times here, the right procedure is to inform Environmental Health.

CircleofWillis · 21/02/2020 00:57

How are feeling now OP?

Blondie1092 · 21/02/2020 07:24

Thanks for asking @CircleofWillis
I'm actually still quiet unwell. Thought I was better yesterday and had a cupasoup for lunch (all I could manager) but made a proper dinner (potatoes, chicken and peas). Felt very "crampy" and put it down to AF, started to get sweaty and shivery again and was throwing up all evening 🤢
I'd say it's definitely a bug we all caught!
DH still isn't himself but is definitely in better shape than me. He's managing to keep food down at least!

londonrach · 21/02/2020 07:30

Blondie1092 · 23/02/2020 23:04

A small update for you guys, so apparently I'm 3 weeks pregnant 🤯😐 a complete spanner in the works. I'm delighted obviously but I also had my "AF" last week so now my head is all over the place!
Now I'm thinking could the sickness and bleeding be signs of an ectopic pregnancy?
But the three others were also very sick from our stay?!?
Somebody help me! 😂🙈🤯
What a mess!!

Lweji · 23/02/2020 23:09

Well...
Congratulations. Flowers

It could happen at once.
I never got sick at 3 weeks. More like at 6. It may well not have been anything to do with it.

justasking111 · 23/02/2020 23:10

Go see your GP tomorrow.

babbi · 23/02/2020 23:18

Congratulations on your pregnancy 🤰
See the GP tomorrow .. hope you start to feel better soon x

Blondie1092 · 23/02/2020 23:22

Could be a complete coincidence that we were sick.
BFP was a shock. Calling GP tomorrow as I bled for 9 day there (only stopped today). I feel something could possibly be wrong. 😰

OP posts:
NumbersStation · 24/02/2020 08:47

Hope all is well after you speak to your GP op. Flowers

TheVanguardSix · 24/02/2020 09:00

Shellfish is notorious for causing norovirus, OP. My money's on the crab. I actually avoid shellfish pretty much full-stop because of this. Shellfish filter the sea water, which is full of bacteria that accumulate inside the shellfish. Norovirus particles collect in seawater and shellfish absorb it. If the meat isn't properly cooked, boom! Noro for dinner.
Get well soon. Noro sucks! Buy Sterizar to sterilise your home. It kills norovirus and you'll need to disinfect your house to avoid reinfection a few weeks from now. Hot water and bleach, spray the Sterizar on surfaces (I always have a bottle handy. It's the business!).

TheVanguardSix · 24/02/2020 09:01

Oh!! Just saw the BFP!! Congratulations. But at 3 weeks, your symptoms would not be so severe, I imagine. Good luck at the GP. Fingers crossed for a very happy and healthy outcome. I'm quite worried for you.
