To call the hotel and let them know we are sick?

Blondie1092 · 17/02/2020 10:14

Myself and my husband, along with another couple who we are good friends with went to a hotel on Saturday night for their "valentines deal". We had a 5 course meal shortly after we arrived and hung about the hotel for drinks that evening, nothing too mad, all very civilised. We got up yesterday morning, had breakfast and went home.
One of us became very ill on the way home. I thought it was a hangover and we all laughed because none of us were actually drunk.
Last night I started to fall very ill and didn't sleep much. Then this morning all hell broke loose (I'm talking about my stomach an bowels TMI but hey can't beat around the bush). I'm lying in bed shivering yet sweating 😓
My husband rang me to ask if I'll collect him from work as he is also the same.
He rang the other couple to check on them and they're both off work today because they're sick.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm thinking we have ate something that has caused this.
Should I ring the hotel to inform them about this? Or just power through and forget the whole thing every happened? What would you do?

Good poisoning would happen in a much shorter time. This sounds like Norovirus.

BIWI · 17/02/2020 15:58

No @pontiuspilates, as me and other PP have pointed out, that's simply not true!

BIWI · 17/02/2020 15:58

As I ... Blush

InescapableDeath · 17/02/2020 16:30

"food poisoning is really quick" is much the same myth as "if you had flu you wouldn't be able to go on mumsnet" and is equally damaging.

We really do take the whole stiff upper lip thing too far sometimes...

pontiouspilates · 17/02/2020 16:38

Sorry, my bad BIWI firstly did not RTWT and secondly, did not know that it could take so long to manifest. Every day's a school day!

gingersausage · 17/02/2020 16:49

I think the basic food hygiene certificate should be compulsory in schools, if only to stop people perpetuating endless myths about food poisoning 🙄.

DontCallMeShitley · 17/02/2020 17:27

Iamthewombat you have either misunderstood what I posted, or are being argumentative for some reason best known to yourself.

I gave an example of seafood causing illness, an example of environmental health doing nothing in spite of evidence. I also agreed that it might be norovirus (in my first post).

I hope the OP is well soon, and that the matter is resolved regardless of whether my posting is of any use or not.

Iamthewombat · 17/02/2020 17:34

Well, it’s not. I’m pointing out the obvious lack of logic. The number of hours between eating a piece of ‘clearly rotten’ fish and the onset time of food poisoning caused by a food poisoning pathogen are entirely unrelated. Irrespective of whether the OP ate seafood.

Iamthewombat · 17/02/2020 17:36

Sorry, missed a bit because train coming! The number of hours between eating a piece of rotten fish and being sick tells us nothing about the onset time of food poisoning caused by pathogens.

Tellingitlikeitisnt · 17/02/2020 17:40

Contact public health
If this is FP then their kitchens need inspecting and a discussion about their staff and supply chain

Hope you feel better soon. D&V is grim.

Iamthewombat · 17/02/2020 17:40

I don’t work in the hospitality industry any more, but I have in the past and I have the advanced good hygiene certificate. The level of ignorance around food poisoning amongst consumers is surprising.

You cannot equate decay/rotting of food with food poisoning. It doesn’t work like that. Food can look, smell and taste perfectly ok but can still carry bacteria or viruses.

Customers are quick to blame ‘food poisoning’ or ‘something I ate’ if they feel bad after a night out, but often it’s caused by drinking or eating too much, or unfamiliar food.

I hope that the OP gets a diagnosis. My guess is still Norovirus.

GabsAlot · 17/02/2020 18:32

If they havent rung by tomorrow morning phone eh its not on to just fob you off

Jessikka · 17/02/2020 18:37

As others have suggested, it may be norovirus that you picked up from the toilets. I was in the same boat 2018 and it was horrendous. I assumed food poisoning as my sister was I'll also but doc confirmed norovirus and as we all went to toilet, we figured we picked it up there!

AlexaAmbidextra · 17/02/2020 18:44

food poisoning is really quick" is much the same myth as "if you had flu you wouldn't be able to go on mumsnet" and is equally damaging.

You can add to that ‘if the bleeding from your rectum is bright red then it’s nothing to worry about’. 🙄

SW16 · 17/02/2020 18:49

I don’t think you could have caught it from each other because you all went down with it in such a short space of time of each other.

CoffeeCoinneseur · 17/02/2020 18:56

Report to the Food Standards Agency.

I really feel for you. DH got food poisoning at the "worlds best restaurant" in Denmark and I had to go and collect him from the airport after a flight home. He looked like death - the client he'd gone with had chartered flights - thank god, otherwise he, his client and his 2 colleagues would never have been allowed on a commercial flight.

4 of them basically took it in turns to occupy the toilet all the way home.

He literally cried in the car when I collected him (and shat himself on the motorway Grin).

Blondie1092 · 17/02/2020 19:20

Still no call, rang hotel again to be told there was no manager on today. I had been told manager was in a meeting twice earlier.
I was ringing to just merely inform the manager, wasn't looking of any compensation or trouble. Really didn't want to ring EH and cause any bother but feel like I may have to tomorrow as I'm feeling panned off 😰
DH still very unwell. As am I. Both not sure about work tomorrow 😭

coconuttelegraph · 17/02/2020 19:25

Of course they are fobbing you off, ring EH first thing tomorrow, no hotel doesn't have some kind of manger on the premises

Mischance · 17/02/2020 19:30

Do not go t work - if it is not food poisoning but a virus, then you will be very unpopular indeed.

CoffeeCoinneseur · 17/02/2020 19:32

The FSA is your first port of call for a complaint - here

Lightsabre · 17/02/2020 19:36

I once had a cold crab dish from Marks and Spencer and was very ill, shaking, sweating and d and v for theee days. It was horrendous and really put me off eating crab forever more sadly. I'm also very careful with mussels and chicken.

Parkandride · 17/02/2020 19:44

No to work! You need to recover and not risk spreading it if it is a bug

@CoffeeCoinneseur beginning with an N? Thats so disappointing!

Bitofnamechanging · 17/02/2020 19:46

Is it possible they're avoiding your call because they're either doing damage control behind the scenes or investigating?

Elizadoeslittle19 · 17/02/2020 19:50

You really have to ring environmental health @Blondie1092. How many people were eating in the hotel, how many of them could be sick? It is possible other diners have already rang them. It does sound like the hotel aren't taking you seriously, and are delaying ringing you back for some reason. A colleague of mine phoned GP with similar symptoms and they were asked to provide a stool sample, who then informed the local council/ EH. I think she says depending on the bug identified, in some instances EH have to automatically be notified. Hope you are all feeling better soon Flowers

aroseaday · 17/02/2020 20:03

@Blondie1092 please don't go to work tomorrow!! It could be a bug and you must wait 48hrs after LAST SYMPTOM before returning to daily life.

I'm immune compromised and I've had to leave work before when someone came back too early as I can't risk getting ill. It could kill me and other people. Sad

I also would have rung EH as opposed to the hotel as they now have warning to throw stuff out and clean/lie!
