To ask why people flee the UK?

I haven't posted in a while and have name changed. In light of recent events such as brexit, royal drama and suicidal behaviour- I can't help but to pick up on a troubling undercurrent. So I guess I am asking for anyone to shed light on why you have fled the UK or why you might consider doing so?

Who fled the UK?
Am I missing something? 😳
(Megxit - wish Canadians all the best as they are likely to pick up a share of the security cost)

Sparklesocks · 16/02/2020 20:17

Most people I know have left because of the weather, or for better economic prospects.

Reginabambina · 16/02/2020 20:19

We would have left for financial reasons if labour won the last election. Would consider moving in future because British houses are too small and the weather is too cold but I would call that fleeing.

BertieBotts · 16/02/2020 20:21

We have left the UK, I wouldn't call it fleeing though - we didn't feel we were forced out or escaping anything!

We moved for better job opportunities. We stay because the weather and lifestyle is better. We aren't earning masses more than we were in the UK but we don't feel like second class citizens because of our income level any more. Also just small things like infrastructure, healthcare, public transport and government things in general feel set up to help/support citizens (and residents, we're still British citizens) in a functional way rather than being either forgotten and abandoned or actually predatory.

PineappleDanish · 16/02/2020 20:21

But none of that would be "fleeing". Fleeing is packing a bag and disappearing in the middle of the night with only what you can carry.

OP is talking about people emigrating.

HappyHammy · 16/02/2020 20:24

What do you mean by flee? People leave and emigrate for good weather, cheaper property, relaxed way of life, better career prospects and salaries, a cleaner environment and maybe because work is relocating.

seasonalsparkler · 16/02/2020 20:24

@sparklesocks and regina- as a native minority- yeah I just did that- I get the weather is cold. However, we are pretty low on the natural disaster pecking order. I'd choose a chill in the air over a full blown tornado or an earthquake.

OP posts:
wildcherries · 16/02/2020 20:26

When I left it was to achieve better quality and standard of living and, as PP said, not feel like a second class citizen because of income level.

AdoptedBumpkin · 16/02/2020 20:27

Regina...at least you had the option of moving, unlike the people using foodbanks etc.

WorraLiberty · 16/02/2020 20:29

What does royal drama and 'suicidal behaviour' have to do with people fleeing the UK?

seasonalsparkler · 16/02/2020 20:29

@pineappledanish and happy :)

Same difference really. Six and one and half a dozen of another. Let's not be so pedantic here.

seasonalsparkler · 16/02/2020 20:30

Of*

The irony lol!

OP posts:
jasjas1973 · 16/02/2020 20:32

Given the recent rain and wind, i'd question if we are that low on the natural disasters list, it's not going to get better.

We are going to s/w france, weather, life style, nice people and the one thing i won't miss? its litter..... fuckin everywhere here.

seasonalsparkler · 16/02/2020 20:37

@WorraLiberty

It just seems to be happening all at once. I want to steer clear away from conspiracy way of thinking as that gets no one anywhere. I guess I am speaking to avid Mumsnetters. I have directed a question to those who are capable of answering it.

OP posts:
ElbasAbsentPenis · 16/02/2020 20:41

We’re thinking of leaving as we live in a university town and see it rapidly draining of international talent as people can’t get research funding /
visas etc.

Luckily we have the option to live and work in a couple of different countries where the state education system is better, life expectancy is longer, and there isn’t such a pernicious anti-expertise, xenophobic culture shift in train.

thepeopleversuswork · 16/02/2020 20:42

I don't think people are "fleeing" the UK.

I've heard anecdotally of quite a lot of people who were born elsewhere but moved and have lived here a long time leaving because they are turned off by the growing sense that this country is becoming more inward-looking and jingoistic. I used to work in an industry where a lot of bright people were hired from overseas on special visas and amid the Brexit mania they started feeling that while they might be allowed to remain here they didn't want their families growing up somewhere with an unpleasant sense of foreigners not being welcome. I think there's definitely some of that going on. I can't blame them either.

But that's a whole other bunfight and I don't have the stamina now.

Porcupineinwaiting · 16/02/2020 20:51

What a strange question. People leave in search of a better life, of course. And, although you may find this hard to believe, many of them find it. What constitutes a better way of life varies of course but climate, career prospects, work life balance, better housing, better education for the children are often on the list.

meltonmowbray · 16/02/2020 20:56

Would anyone like to name the countries they are all emigrating to ? One poster has named SW France.

Patroclus · 16/02/2020 20:58

Moving because of labour hahahahahahaha

AutumnRose1 · 16/02/2020 21:01

OP “It just seems to be happening all at once“

Okay, I really feel like I’ve missed something. Or a lot of things. What’s happened?

seasonalsparkler · 16/02/2020 21:05

@patroclus do you mean labour or Labour?

OP posts:
abitlostandalwayshungry · 16/02/2020 21:10

we never were thinking of leaving but Brexit has changed that.

pointythings · 16/02/2020 21:14

We are EU nationals in the UK, DDs and I all have settled status and DDs were born here, but we are certainly thinking seriously about leaving the UK. It has changed beyond recognition and with every week that passes the lessons of history are forgotten more and more.

Selmaselma · 16/02/2020 21:26

I am one of thepeopleversuswork's examples but already left London and the UK few years ago for better healthcare. If I had stayed I would have left last year or now at the latest.

MrsFezziwig · 16/02/2020 21:28

Let's not be so pedantic here

I don’t think it’s being pedantic to point out that you have used an expression which means something quite different to what you presumably intended. Criminals or those in fear of their lives would “flee” a country. Not people who leave because they can earn more elsewhere or because they prefer different weather.

And why would an “avid” Mumsnetter be in a better position to answer your question than any other Mumsnetter? Confused
