Just that. Do you believe in Heaven? If so what do you think it’s like. Im not religious but do believe there is a Heaven or would like to believe there some place we will see loved ones again and find peace ourselves.

For thousands of years people believed there was something beyond them. Hence the exploration to find new civilisations.
I think that so much of our mind is underdeveloped we haven’t got the capacity to get our rational mind round ‘a heaven’.
I’ve no problem with believing in ‘a heaven’ but not sure what form it would take.

Hobbesmanc · 17/02/2020 12:33

aww I hope there is something. Its probably one of the last vestiges of the strong Christian environment in which I was raised but it gives me great comfort to believe that I will see my mum again

Hell is what you get if you don't commit to a belief in god?

What sort of god is it who's punishment for not believing in him is an eternal hell? Any better a god who shrugs and says the default setting is purgatory unless you've worshiped him; but there's nothing he can do about it so sorry and all that but it's the [basement] button for most of you? Shock Really?

Isn't it so clear that the crime/punishment aspect is just an age old method of control?

The concept of 'good' and 'bad' is entirely of our own human making and arose as we evolved and needed to keep structure within a more complicated society. Living productively together means we need to co-operate and abide by laws. The threat of outcast if you don't abide. Hence good and bad. And it's important. We do need to have common values and laws.

The idea of there somehow being an eternal awful and 'out of our hands' punishment for being bad is the ultimate (and lazy) law keeper isn't it. And the churches the world over sold the idea with great enthusiasm ...

I realise my above post is about hell. This thread is supposed to be about heaven - so apologies. But i genuinely wonder how many believers in heaven believe there must be the opposite? And of those how many actually quietly worry about that?

WitchQueenofDarkness · 17/02/2020 12:53

No.

Snaga · 17/02/2020 12:57

Nope, we die and that's the end.

That's actually more comforting than the idea that someone who lives a life of good deeds but no faith should be banished to hell but someone who exhibits great faith but has a checkered history (absolved by confession) gets to reside in the glory of paradise.

NotMyFIrstTIme · 17/02/2020 13:00

No. I don't believe in any sort of after life or reincarnation.

64sNewName · 17/02/2020 13:03

No, I don’t believe in it.

I think a lot about lost loved ones, hold them in my memory and feel intensely sad about missing them, but there is no level on which I actually imagine an afterlife or reunion as plausible.

SimonJT · 17/02/2020 13:04

No, we die and our mind can no longer exist, we then either end up underground or in an oven.

Heaven the club, very much so, performed there once with my rugby club:

HalfManHalfLabrador · 17/02/2020 13:06

No

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 17/02/2020 13:11

no and I frankly cannot get my head around how any reasonable adult could believe in that kind of stuff. There is no evidence, nothing. I find it mind boggling to say the least.

Of course there's no evidence: it's a faith based concept Confused

Do I think heaven exists? Oh, absolutely: without a shadow of a doubt.

notchickenagain · 17/02/2020 13:16

Mischance so sorry. Thanks

pigsDOfly · 17/02/2020 13:18

No, as a logical person who has been given no evidence to the contrary, I can't believe in something about which there is no proof.

Any ideas of what heaven or hell might be are made up in order to keep people in line: behave yourself and you'll go to a far, far better place when you die, don't behave yourself and you'll go to hell. Powerful stuff when you have all the power and are dealing with the gullible masses.

No, I just believe we die and become worm food or ash.

TheSandman · 17/02/2020 13:31

Do I think heaven exists? Oh, absolutely: without a shadow of a doubt.

Why?

EntirelyAnonymised · 17/02/2020 13:32

No, I am an Athiest and think of heaven/hell as instruments of control but I absolutely understand that the concept and belief of it brings comfort to some.

Felipa · 17/02/2020 13:38

No. It would be lovely if true but I can't rationally believe in it. The whole typical idea of it.doesnt make any sense.

Biker47 · 17/02/2020 13:43

No. It was fabricated to keep people in line and to give unquestionable power to people who shouldn't be allowed it.

Bleakskies · 17/02/2020 13:45

I thought this was a post about the gay club in London.

RuffleCrow · 17/02/2020 13:46

Not really, but I do like The Good Place's take on it.

Honeybee85 · 17/02/2020 13:47

I do believe there is something after death but I’m not sure if it’s heaven. Reincarnation seems more likely to me.

aLilNonnyMouse · 17/02/2020 13:56

I've never been able to believe in heaven or anything religious. It all just falls apart at the most simple questioning. I can see why it's comforting to believe in it though.

We are just electrical impulses running through some flesh. Nothing more, nothing less. Animals are the same and we don't believe they go to heaven so what makes us different.

Laiste · 17/02/2020 13:59

what makes us different

The fact that we're the only species which is aware of it's mortality!

I'm agreeing with you btw :)

StoneofDestiny · 17/02/2020 14:04

Hell is what you get if you don't commit to a belief in god?

Nope, don't believe that. I don't believe people were created to be condemned to 'hell'. Nor do I think 'a heaven' is only for certain faith groups or religious people.
