To be annoyed they wouldn’t sell the false nails to me?

Dd (12) and I have just got back from a shopping trip.
We popped into B&M, I purchased a few bits and dd had chosen some body butter and a pack of false nails for herself. She was purchasing them with some pocket money so I made my purchases first and paid up and dd popped her bits in the conveyor belt so she could pay for these bits herself.
The lady at the till looked at dd then called over the manager. I was stood next to dd and asked what the problem was. The manager said she needed proof of ID to show if dd was over 14 (no label in false nails stating this). I said ‘She is 12, is it because there is glue in the pack?’, they said yes and I said I understood, no worries I’ll buy them. The manager came back with ‘No, I can not sell them to you as your daughter is standing with you and we know they are for her’, wtf!! I then said ‘Well, that’s ridiculous but ok. I’ll sent dd back to the car and I’ll go back round, pick up a new pack of nails and pay for them myself’.....’No, we won’t sell them to you today as we know they are for your dd’!!!!!!
WTAF?? I totally understand there must be rules, regulations and policies to safeguard vulnerable people etc but is this not taking it to a completely new level, FFS!!

Just to clarify as I may not have made it clear in my op as I was feeling a bit incandescent at the time (calmed down now 😁) but I was by no way blaming the staff, the poor lady on the check out did mutter under her breath ‘oh god, I hate when I get these!’. I was just annoyed they had no sticker on the pack to explain this policy.
Dd popped into a different shop yesterday with a friend (also 12) and both purchased a pack of nails, with glue, no issues!? 🤷‍♀️
Just a quick note to those asking why on earth I would let my 12 year old wear false nails. The glue in them is quite gentle and frankly a bit shit, they will go on on a Friday eve and have fallen off come Sunday. It’s not like I’m paying for her to have full acrylics, letting her wear a face full of make up and sending her off clubbing on a weekend it’s just a little bit of fun dress up, like most of her friends do and like I did at that age too, hasn’t done me any harm (well apart from the mega doses of sun-in/spiral perms combo which well and truly cocked up my hair for a while!)

Sound like one of those situations where the law has been interpreted really stupidly. Glue is not the same as something like alcohol because people under 18 are not allowed to buy or drink alcohol . In contrast they use glue all the time clearly an adult will always buy it for them. It is illegal for an adult to buy glue for a child to use then clearly schools etc are breaking the law. I can see why shops don't take the risk though.

What a childish thing to do just because you think rules shouldn't apply to you!

Why would it need childish to buy the glue elsewhere?. A parent doing that is not breaking the law because they are allowed to let their children use glue. The shop they buy the glue from will not be breaking the law either if the child is not there. Everyone's happy.

Do you know the consequences for both the person on the till, the manager and the shop?

The person on the till could be fined and/or lose their job.

The manager could be disciplined, fined and/or lose their job.

The shop WILL be fined.

Would you be happy if your 15 year old came home pissed because they convinced an adult to buy alcohol for them

Doesn't that happen all the time when parents buy alcohol for their 15 year olds to take to parties?

Proxy sales apply to all age restricted products

Common sense tells you that can't be the case as you have to be able to buy medicine for children. I am a bit surprised it doesn't apply to cigarettes though.

I was just annoyed they had no sticker on the pack to explain this policy

I do think that all age restricted items should have a clear sticker on them.

And in an related point, I think all staff aged under 18 should have a badge on so you know to use a different till if you are buying an age restricted item and don't want to hang around for ages until a supervisor appears.

I bought an 18+ DVD the other week at a self-service till. Didn't even occur to me that someone would need to ok the purchase. Doh!

Just checked and proxy sales DO apply to cigarettes/tobacco. That would have been rather odd.

Not tippex or glue though.
