To give my DDs this for dinner? Pic attached

I know it’s nothing bad on their plate but it’s not a hot meal and i don’t know much about nutrition. I know there is obviously veg, whole meal bread which i know is better. Then tuna which I’m sure is healthy and olives etc.

My DDs love this sort of meal with lots of different things on their plate and ask me to give them this often but I feel lazy giving them something that hardly requires any prep.

Is this nutritious enough for an evening meal?

YABU - I shouldn’t be giving them that for dinner

YANBU - it’s perfectly fine

Of course it's fine, people are obsessed with 'hot' dinners. Hmm

And the faux horror of 'double carbs' .............just off to have my dinner, crisps (with wine) followed by bread and cheese - Grin. May or may not add a little bit of salad.

HAhelp101 · 14/02/2020 18:56

Food doesn't need to be hot. It's nice but not necessary. People are obsessed with needing one hot meal a day. But in my book a meal is a meal regardless of temperature. A fed child is a happy child. As long as they aren't living on pot noodles I don't see the problem

Iamnotaroboteither · 14/02/2020 18:59

I think it's great! Heating food (not that you'd heat any of that) only depletes the vitamins/minerals anyway. I just gave my 3 and 6 year old bean and cheese potato as my fussy/allergic 8 year old who won't/can't eat that is out and the baby had an Ella's Kitchen pouch. Mum of the Year is me.....

Shinycat · 14/02/2020 19:02

@EverythingsEasy Looks fab! I'd come to your house for dinner. Smile

OhLook · 14/02/2020 19:03

I think the hot meal thing is handed down from generations when there was no central heating and kids wore short trousers in winter with no coats etc.

Bingeslayer · 14/02/2020 19:05

Perfectly fine

Thurmanmurman · 14/02/2020 19:05

Looks good to me. If my DC ate olives and tomatoes I'd be happy (they won't)!

eyemask · 14/02/2020 19:06

It's fine, I prefer hot meals in the winter and would give that sort of thing in the summer. But that's just personal preference as the plate of food is perfectly healthy.

ClientQueen · 14/02/2020 19:06

If it's got some veg/fruit, protein, carbs and fat (over the course of a day) then it's fine. And they eat it. And there's some vague variety. Job done
I often eat like that all summer, bits of feta, couscous, tomatoes, cucumber etc

user1480880826 · 14/02/2020 19:07

Looks fine to me. My only comment is that the recommendation is to only serve processed meat once per week. That includes ham and bacon. I think the same is true of tuna because of the high mercury content.

RoryGillmoresEvilTwin · 14/02/2020 19:08

Ds age 8 would love that except the olives. He quite often asks for a picnic dinner and I have no problem with that. He eats and I have minimal prep. Win win!

KezQueen · 14/02/2020 19:10

Is this nutritious enough for an evening meal?

Gently OP, there’s children with literally fuck all for dinner tonight. This is just fine!

RoryGillmoresEvilTwin · 14/02/2020 19:10

I should add, I've just eaten cheesy chips with gravey on top so I clearly have no idea about nutrition 😂 it was delicious though.

SallyWD · 14/02/2020 19:11

Looks very healthy. I wish my kids would eat meals like this.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 14/02/2020 19:13

Arguably healthier than my 6yos dinner of... A Pollock fillet (breaded!), 1 potato smile (inside only, she doesn't like the coating), sweetcorn, beans and peas. But i do one lazy dinner per weekend.

(The horror my mother expressed last week we had pizza for dinner! Instead of making a nutritious casserole when I was juggling DHs awkward weekend work schedule, plus entertain the children)

BigFatLiar · 14/02/2020 19:13

Hot dinners only start out hot. My two would sit and talk to each other, to daddy, to me and in between eat. By the time they were done it would be cold. Food on the table, the floor, their clothes and all over themselves, fortunately they were washable.

SW16 · 14/02/2020 19:14

All food is the same temperature by the time it reaches your stomach, anyway.

I read that once,

I don’t think it can be wholly true.

But the benefit if a hot meal is surely psychological. It is 100% possible to live healthily on cold food alone.

Wannabangbang · 14/02/2020 19:16

Looks great to me op, healthy and filling and kids love a plate of different things

butterpuffed · 14/02/2020 19:18

For someone who's saying they don't know about nutrition , you're doing okay OP Smile

PlumsGalore · 14/02/2020 19:18

Absolutely fine, i read it as DH at first and thought WTF, hope he doesnt work on a building site.

Two little ones? I am envious they will eat all that veg and olives.

Rocketship · 14/02/2020 19:19

OP this looks beautiful! Very nutritious and full of goodness Smile you'll have two healthy little girls there! Really good to be getting them into healthy foods at a young age. Enjoy!
P.S can I come over for tea please...

BrieAndChilli · 14/02/2020 19:20

If you gave your children hot tuna pasta bake made from pasta, tuna, sweet corn and tinned tomatoes with a side salad of cucumber, peppers and olives would you be asking the same question? It’s all the same ingredients!!

DonnaDarko · 14/02/2020 19:22

I think this is great. Currently, my 3.5 year old will only eat ham wraps, peanut butter and jam sandwiches, strawberries, apples, peas, chips and chicken nuggets 😐

Interestedwoman · 14/02/2020 19:27

YANBU- it's fantastic that they like this kind of stuff.

Unsureconfused46 · 14/02/2020 19:29

@OhLook I'm the same, cannot abide 'Picky tea'
This thread is very much a stealth boast.
