To give my DDs this for dinner? Pic attached

I know it’s nothing bad on their plate but it’s not a hot meal and i don’t know much about nutrition. I know there is obviously veg, whole meal bread which i know is better. Then tuna which I’m sure is healthy and olives etc.

My DDs love this sort of meal with lots of different things on their plate and ask me to give them this often but I feel lazy giving them something that hardly requires any prep.

Is this nutritious enough for an evening meal?

YABU - I shouldn’t be giving them that for dinner

YANBU - it’s perfectly fine

I think it’s fine. I do this too, and we call it a “picky plate”.

Racoonworld · 14/02/2020 18:11

Looks fine and pretty healthy! Not sure what the poster wondering about a stealth boast is going on about, it just looks like normal food to me.

OhLook · 14/02/2020 18:12

Oh please people, don't start saying 'picky tea'... It's such a horrible expression. I one of the reasons I left Mumsnet for years (not really, but it should have been).

Funguy · 14/02/2020 18:13

It is fine for a child, it looks nice apart from the flabby pink ham. Not very nutritious, maybe a bit of cooked meat would be better. Or a veggie sausage even ...

Funguy · 14/02/2020 18:13

ergh picky plate... noooo... horrible.

BarbaraofSeville · 14/02/2020 18:14

If you're concerned about it not being hot, stick it in the microwave for a couple of minutes, problem solved.

Or you could swap it for nuggets and chips, because with that being hot, is magically better for them?

Bakedbrie · 14/02/2020 18:15

Looks perfectly fine. Stop worrying.

SapphosRock · 14/02/2020 18:16

Now I'm feeling guilty for giving my DD egg, chips and beans. Wish she would eat that.

Paperyfish · 14/02/2020 18:19

Looks good to me! Wish my kids would eat something that healthy!

pooopypants · 14/02/2020 18:19

Looks good to me, my DC love 'picky' food

UndertheCedartree · 14/02/2020 18:22

I think it's a lovely meal. My 7 yr old just had tinned spagetti on toast as no way she'd eat the vegetable chilli I'd made!

OhLook · 14/02/2020 18:22

'Picky' food... Bleurgh. Scabs? Bogies?

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 14/02/2020 18:24

Apart from the fact that I would never eat tuna or olives, I guess it is fine.

DishingOutDone · 14/02/2020 18:25

Agree with previous posters - (a) why would anyone think this was unhealthy (b) stealth boast or fishing for compliments surely and (c) picky tea is up there with u ok hun. Is that who you want to be?

Poohpooh · 14/02/2020 18:30

Would I want to eat it as an adult? No

Is it ok for kids? Yes

Bunnybigears · 14/02/2020 18:32

Protein, carbs, multi coloured veg nothing wrong with that. The temperature of the food doesnt make it any more or any less nutritious.

TeaAndCake321 · 14/02/2020 18:32

My 4 and 2 year old eat similar for tea, they love pasta and tomatoes (and not much else) so they tend to appear in the majority of meals! As long as they have a balanced diet not full of processed rubbish (this meal is fine in my opinion) and appear healthy and active I wouldn't be worried at all.

WorraLiberty · 14/02/2020 18:33

My own mum heated up frozen kids food most of the time for us, with the odd chippy thrown in so I have nothing to go off. I just know I want to try to feed my kids more healthily than I was fed when I was young.

You have the entire internet at your fingers.

You can learn about nutrition if you want to.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 14/02/2020 18:38

Na, I wouldn't feed my kids that.

SpeedofaSloth · 14/02/2020 18:41

That's what we call a picnic tea in our house, and it's my 6yo's favourite.

Ginfordinner · 14/02/2020 18:42

Apart from the double carbs it looks fine. Why bread and pasta?

Nancydrawn · 14/02/2020 18:43

Oooh--a picnic dinner! We always loved a picnic dinner when we were kids.

We also liked what my mother called, brightly, "tapas night," which was just all the leftovers from the week set out in individual bowls. We thought it was terribly sophisticated.

FurrySlipperBoots · 14/02/2020 18:43

It's a bit of a random selection. I don't personally think olives, pesto pasta, ham and tuna go together at all, but it's just food isn't it really, not every meal needs to be perfectly planned and perfectly nutritionally balanced, as long as the overall diet is healthy. I'm sure this will keep them alive til the morning alright, which is your main aim.

Oblomov20 · 14/02/2020 18:47

Yum. I'm on my way. I'd like it for lunch, probably not an evening meal dinner.

SunshineCake · 14/02/2020 18:49

Complete opposite of encouraging picky eaters Hmm.
