Salt reduction
I’m afraid I’m becoming more and more convinced that reducing things in food that are supposedly “baad” for us simply leads to us eating more seeking satisfaction of whatever it was we were craving.
So really it’s self defeating.
Back in the 70’s and 80’s there was real sugar, full fat milk and cream and decent amounts of salt in food and actually we were thinner and healthier!
I’m honestly convinced that we will in the near future learn that artificial sweeteners have a detrimental effect on health in some way.
As an ex nurse who during my training had very interesting conversations with dieticians, other nurses and midwives on the subject at the time when trans fats were being feted as “better” for us than small amounts of naturally occurring fats I think we’ll experience a similar situation as happened then.
They all said that they strongly felt based on their training & experience that the healthiest diet is one with variety BUT with foods that were as close to naturally occurring as possible with the occasional sensibly portioned treats.
I am starting to think there may be a link between this and the rise in certain medical conditions we are seeing - not just diabetes but certain metabolic disorders and gastric conditions.
Packets of crisps now compared to then are
A HUGE! Even the “individual” packs are DOUBLE the size they were then
B made often not from simply thinly sliced and fried potatoes but chemical concoctions made from barely recognisable ingredients
C fried in unnatural fats
D flavoured with chemical crap masquerading as seasoning
If they went back to potatoes barely messed with, fried in normal fats, properly seasoned with natural salt, pepper, herbs and spices but in smaller packs I reckon we’d be much better off!
“Looked at the ingredients and bingo, fucking palm oil” ugh! Yes! Also a major issue with food generally being destroyed by this crap!!
I too have resorted at times to adding salt myself it’s ridiculous!
