What has happened to crisps???

I went to enjoy a pack of salt and vinegar Mccoys today, remembering the strong tongue-tingling sensation they left my tongue - filled with flavour and exciting, however, today this was not the case - I've tried a couple of packs and all of them have less flavour than I remember??? Is this trying to reduce calories or keeping the cost down?? I don't know but I'm not impressed. Would love to hear others opinions xxx

My sense of smell isn't as good as it once was! My late mil died aged 93 and her sense of smell was still incredible. It amazed me as it does diminish we age usually.
I still can't tolerate really hot tasting food or chillis though: not for me.

Chesntoots · 14/02/2020 16:34

I had some Pringles the other week and thought they were a bit soggy. I assumed it was just a slightly off pack. Obviously not.

I used to love Nik Naks but if they are as bland as everyone says then I won't bother.

Palm oil is everywhere and I've now got my auntie checking chocolate bars as she also finds chocolate too greasy and craggy. The bloody stuff should be banned!

longtimelurkerhelen · 14/02/2020 16:35

@AlexaAmbidextra Asda own brand of pringles have a good crunchy texture. Much better than the branded one and less than half price. Grin

ThePlantsitter · 14/02/2020 16:39

I have had to go cold turkey on the crisps but last time I had Sainsbury's chipsticks they were v nice and tangy.

Crinkle77 · 14/02/2020 16:41

@neveradullmoment99 if I eat too many salt & vinegar Pringles the corners of my mouth get sore. I assume it's from all the acetic acid.

Anyway OP Disco's are still really vinegary but you get hardly any in a packet and Ringo's are good too.

Straycatstrut · 14/02/2020 16:56

The only ones I will still buy are pringles. Sour cream and S&V. S&V were all I could eat through my morning sickness, I lived off them and pink lucozade!

All others are just disappointing. I remember being amazed by the flavour explosion of pickled onion monster munch, scami n lemon nik naks and alll the discos!

PlanDeRaccordement · 14/02/2020 16:58

strong tongue-tingling sensation they left my tongue

Was your taste buds being destroyed. So, of course it will take more vinegar to give you the same sensation you had as a child.
The crisps are probably the same, it’s that your tongue has fewer taste buds.

Jojobythesea · 14/02/2020 16:58

I second the Co-op Chardonnay vinegar and salted crisps. Had my first taste at Christmas and they are AMAZING!!

Jojobythesea · 14/02/2020 16:58

Or good old salt and vinegar Pringles 👍👍

lottiegarbanzo · 14/02/2020 16:59

Oh yes, Discos were always good (new-fangled 90s crisps that I think they are).

Otherwise, chipsticks are the only reliable way I know to good a good S&V tang.

Evilspiritgin · 14/02/2020 17:01

Tayto n.ireland still do spring onion crisps, I also really love cheese and pickle mini cheddars

WatchingFromTheWings · 14/02/2020 17:09

Another one saying Co-op crisps are best! Also struggle with resisting them when on 2 for £2. I like the salt & vinegar and the cheddar & onion. The gourmet burger ones they do (seemingly only in the lead up to Christmas) are my absolute favourite.

FiremanSlam · 14/02/2020 17:11

Beardie, the coop Chardonnay vinegar ones are amazing. You can't beat them for blowing your tongue off!

LaurieMarlow · 14/02/2020 17:13

Disco salt and vinegar.

I had forgotten their mouth puckering charms.

I want some now Grin

Jellybeansincognito · 14/02/2020 17:32

KP cheese and onion were the best too!

sideorderofchips · 14/02/2020 17:46

Discos. Or waitrose essential crisps are AMAZINGLY full of flavour

Lojoh · 14/02/2020 18:51

Taste buds last about two weeks. You definitely don't have the taste buds you had as a child, but not because you ate too much vinegar!

StrawberrySquash · 14/02/2020 19:42

McCoy's changed the cheese ones a year or two ago and they are a bit meh. Presumably they changed the S&V too? Aldi knock offs aren't bad.
I do find crisps are very variable, both in texture and seasoning. The first I can forgive a bit because nature. The second not so much. Consistency should be a benefit of processed crap!

BumbleBree · 14/02/2020 20:08

Yep. Coop ones. And some of Europe sell Lays spring onion crisps. They are gorgeous.

Randomname85 · 14/02/2020 20:23

Absolutely STARVING after RTFT. I am a crisp fiend (also miss the mouth numbness).

StirFriedBadger · 14/02/2020 20:36

Definitely co-op crisps - a really strong flavour and not as greasy as kettle chips or walkers.

Coughisoff · 14/02/2020 21:36

Get yourself down to Home Bargains for the Golden Wonder salt and vinegar or pickled onion. My mouth has instantly watered and I gleeked OMG

DaisyDreaming · 14/02/2020 21:52

I had Fanta and lays (which is walkers) in France, couldn’t believe how much nicer they were! So much salt in the crisps making them lovely and no sweeteners in the Fanta!

whippetwoman · 14/02/2020 22:05

I have found my people. I like my salt and vinegar crisp experience to be verging on the painful. Will get down to the Co-op tomorrow...

PureAlchemy · 14/02/2020 22:21

I like my crisps to have strong flavours.

Pringles in particular have been disappointing lately, barely a tinge of whatever flavour it’s meant to be. If I buy a tube of BBQ Pringles, then I want to know I’m eating BBQ Pringles without having to check the packet.

Agree co op crisps are great. Kettle chips are usually good too.
