What has happened to crisps???

I went to enjoy a pack of salt and vinegar Mccoys today, remembering the strong tongue-tingling sensation they left my tongue - filled with flavour and exciting, however, today this was not the case - I've tried a couple of packs and all of them have less flavour than I remember??? Is this trying to reduce calories or keeping the cost down?? I don't know but I'm not impressed. Would love to hear others opinions xxx

@SVRT19674 you can get Smith's salt and shake in big supermarkets and aldi do their own

tigger1001 · 14/02/2020 15:42

I agree with the posters who recommend the co op Chardonnay vinegar crisps. Very strong. My mouth is watering just thinking about them.

I have a packet in the cupboard to enjoy tonight 😊

LucyAutumn · 14/02/2020 15:45

What's happened to the individual sale of McCoys plain?! Bloody loved buying a pack of them when out and about and can't get one anywhere now Sad

Jellybeansincognito · 14/02/2020 15:45

McCoy’s used to be ‘thick cut’ and for the past 3 months they’ve changed to ‘ridged’ and now don’t taste as nice.

Oysterbabe · 14/02/2020 15:46

The coop ones are great. Salt and vinegar pringles melt your face off too.

Todayissunny · 14/02/2020 15:51

They probably don't have MSG in them any more. That gives the tongue-tingling sensation and flavour.

neveradullmoment99 · 14/02/2020 15:51

Pringles salt and vinegar!!! Very sharp!

KatherineJaneway · 14/02/2020 15:55

I love crisps. Just sayin' Grin

AJTracey · 14/02/2020 15:56

Coop s&v best crisps EVERRRRR

The80sweregreat · 14/02/2020 15:59

It just could be that our taste buds change and 'wear out ' as we get older? Things I just couldn't tolerate eating years ago I can now ! I only like plain crisps so I can't really comment on flavoured ones, but a lot of things have changed for the worse ( chocolate being one) so it could be that they are making them with different oil or cheaper ingredients or something?

TheQueef · 14/02/2020 16:03

Did spring onion flavour crisps ever exist?
I dimly recall them but have never seen since.

Nowayorhighway · 14/02/2020 16:08

Seabrooks are the same. I may or may not have eaten three packs of sour cream and onion ones today, still extremely delicious!

Mrsmadevans · 14/02/2020 16:14

Lidl smoky bacon & cheese & onion are lovely
Tyrell's sweet chilli & red pepper are the DDS favourites Smile

The80sweregreat · 14/02/2020 16:15

I watched nearly all the programmes on how food like crisps and cakes etc are mass produced in factories and it's a wonder we eat anything really when you see it being rolled around on conveyor belts and packed up for delivery! It seems so sterile and unnatural and how long is it sitting about in warehouses and on lorries before we get to buy it? I bet that's why so many things are tasteless these days as well! It's all about the profit I bet.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/02/2020 16:17

Not exactly crisps, since they call them poppadoms, but I absolutely love the Walkers’ Sensations Lime and Coriander. Lethally moreish.

lottiegarbanzo · 14/02/2020 16:23

My impression is that the Walker-isation of crisps destroyed all good flavours, about 15-20 years ago.

Once upon a time, back in the '80s, KP were the best, strongest salt and vinegar and Golden Wonder were ok too. These days, the only decent flavours, in 'small packet' crisps, come from Seabrooks.

(I suddenly feel like a retired Victorian Colonel, reminiscing about how things were 'back in the '80s!')

@TheQueef yes they did! Tudor used to do them along with the best pickled onion crisps ever! (Walkers might at some point too)
The best I have found recently for flavour and the giant salt and vinegar Hula Hoops, my tongue was raw for days! I went back and stocked up!!

Red Walkers were the best plain crisps ' back in the day' then I found plain kettle crisps and liked them a lot , but they are boring now and tasteless.
This is good for the diet though.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 14/02/2020 16:27

@TheQueef spring onion crinklin cheddars.

Was proper gutted when they stopped them.

lottiegarbanzo · 14/02/2020 16:28

While I'm at it though, I'm feeling a moment of sadness for the passing of the Phileas Fog range of snacks, including their spicy poppadoms, mignon morceaux (garlic croutons), tortilla chips and other wonders in beautiful packaging. Bought out by some big brand and extinguished.

Skippii · 14/02/2020 16:30

It’s partly because we’re all getting older. The sense of taste and smell reduce with age

goose1964 · 14/02/2020 16:32

Tesco own brand salt and vinegar still taste the same.

VanillaGodzilla · 14/02/2020 16:34

And Pringles. Not only do they not taste the same but you don’t get that lovely snap any more when you bite into them.

I have been shouting at everyone in the house for leaving the pringles to go stale. I opened a brand new tube recently and realised they now make them like that. No crunch, no flavour.
