To wonder if a lot of people are still against drag ?

Shows like Drag Race have become incredibly popular. I have tickets to see the live show in May, and I think drag culture is amazing. It shows how far we have come that such a show is so popular on TV, and I think it should be celebrated.
I asked some friends if they wanted to come to the show with me and they very firmly and quickly told me that they were not fans of that sort of stuff.
When I was a teenager, I used to think Drag Queens were just some middle-aged men on Canal street with a blonde wig and high heels, and I was quite intimidated and scared of them in a way. I wonder if some people still feel that way, and don't judge them for it, just curious.

Some bloke caricaturing them and calling them 'fish' doesn't help matters

Exactly. Yeah such a "celebration" of women isn't it?

vomits

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 14/02/2020 19:24

So ... been off doing wimmin stuff ... did I miss hearing how drag celebrates women/supports women's issues? Hmm

Rocketship · 14/02/2020 19:24

I'm so shocked at the amount of hatred on this thread. I think drag queens are fabulous and really don't think they are mocking woman at all. They celebrate our beauty and curves and femininity. I have next to no self confidence and since watching RuPauls Drag Race I feel I can embrace my curves and not look at myself with disgust anymore.
I'm sorry I know I shouldn't say but I couldn't help but giggle at the use of "womanface". I'm sorry but that is ridiculous, do we just make up things to get offended at now!?
Lighten up people and get yourself to a drag show! Grin

Sadly no! we are STILL waiting for an explanation as to how a drag queen's OTT appearance, demeanor and bitchy behaviour/act is a "celebration" of women....

Rocketship · 14/02/2020 19:33

Mocking women not woman. Oops.

cavabiensepasser · 14/02/2020 20:01

Lighten up people and get yourself to a drag show!

Would rather shit in my hands and clap.
So it really takes a dude prancing about with breast plates to make you accept your own body? How very desperately sad.

Russellbrandshair · 14/02/2020 20:05

Lighten up people and get yourself to a drag show!

I’ve been thanks. No desire to go again. Spiteful and bitchy portrayal of women - by overweight talentless middle aged men who can’t sing or dance to save their lives so have to resort to ridiculous wigs, clown makeup and nastiness for a cheap laugh.

fuckitywhy · 14/02/2020 20:31

I don't get it - it took men dressing up like women for you to feel more confident in your body?

Rocketship · 14/02/2020 20:45

@cavabiensepasser I'm not desperately sad but thanks? Hmm

To each their own!

Not here to start arguments or be embroiled in one because that's really not my scene. I'm entitled to have my own opinion and I happen to agree with the OP.

Sagradafamiliar · 14/02/2020 20:50

What 😂
I've read it all now. Yet more 'celebrating' but now some dude prancing round has made you personally feel less disgusted in yourself? Are you sure? Well that's good, I suppose.

JollyYellaHumberElla · 14/02/2020 20:56

How exciting! Now which drag act should I choose for some harmless hilarious women-empowering, totally-not-misogynistic fun?

Anna Bortion perhaps? Celebrating pro choice I guess?
Perhaps the act famous for performing a miscarriage ‘live on stage’?

Or perhaps the glamorous:
Malestia Child
Who is celebrated in pride.com magazine as having a show that is “equally as hilarious” as their name.

How droll.

cavabiensepasser · 14/02/2020 22:05

Malestia Child

You... you're not serious, right?! Please, PLEASE say this isn't true... Shock

JollyYellaHumberElla · 14/02/2020 22:15

cavabien

Unfortunately yes absolutely true. And apparently worthy of special mentions in pride mag for being so very hilariously talented.

One can only hope they go ‘undercover’ should they choose to jump on the library story time gigs bandwagon.

Rocketship · 14/02/2020 22:19

Can I ask why drag is considered misogynistic?

cavabiensepasser · 14/02/2020 22:19

Envy Envy Envy

This is absolutely fcking disgusting. Absolutely sick. WTF is wrong with men?

Rocketship · 14/02/2020 22:23

@JollyYellaHumberElla I agree with you that those drag names are vile.

To be honest when I think of drag I think of RuPaul and the queens on there. They are fabulous and can do incredible make up artistry. I certainly don't see any hatred towards women on there. Maybe I'm going by a very small pool of drag queens. 🤷‍♀️

MrsCollinssettled · 14/02/2020 22:24

Rocketship because it is taking the piss out of women. You may be laughing with them but they are laughing at you.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 14/02/2020 22:33

They are fabulous and can do incredible make up artistry.

Why do you need to watch men cravenly mocking women to see incredible make up?

There are dozens and dozens of (male and female) make up artists creating breathtakingly incredible, different looks every day. Not just the same old exaggerated pisstake of femininity that drag is.

There was even a BBC tv competition show where they had to do different looks each week. I'm not really into make up but seeing these peoples' skills was fascinating.

INXS998 · 14/02/2020 22:37

I agree they have incredible make up and sewing skills. So much hatred and anger, people can interpret drag however they like and a lot of drag queens are perfectly nice people. There are some offensive elements but as a whole, it's not that because you choose to see it as making fun of women that it's what they are actually doing

OP posts:
Thelnebriati · 14/02/2020 22:45

Report all the hatred and anger, OP. Mumsnet will delete the posts.

The fact is the majority of women who voted don't like drag, don't like the sexist names or being called fish.
That's not hatred or anger.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 14/02/2020 22:48

There are some offensive elements

How much more offensive would it have to get to reach your line in the sand then?

12345kbm · 14/02/2020 22:50

Someone's drunk the Kool Aid.

cavabiensepasser · 14/02/2020 22:50

John Maclean for incredible male makeup artistry. No misogyny that I could see. And Nikkie Tutorials is another one, and I say that as a raging TERF.

Rocketship · 14/02/2020 22:51

@inxs998 looks like we are in the minority on this one.
