To wonder if a lot of people are still against drag ?

Shows like Drag Race have become incredibly popular. I have tickets to see the live show in May, and I think drag culture is amazing. It shows how far we have come that such a show is so popular on TV, and I think it should be celebrated.
I asked some friends if they wanted to come to the show with me and they very firmly and quickly told me that they were not fans of that sort of stuff.
When I was a teenager, I used to think Drag Queens were just some middle-aged men on Canal street with a blonde wig and high heels, and I was quite intimidated and scared of them in a way. I wonder if some people still feel that way, and don't judge them for it, just curious.

Meh. I just find it crap, as in not entertaining. No politics involved - it's just not very good.

DinaCaliente · 14/02/2020 10:48

I'm a fan.

on the "fishy" thing...

On one of the episodes of Drag Race they talked about why they call it that.
"she looks like a woman but there's something fishy about her" ...i.e. a red herring.

12345kbm · 14/02/2020 10:51

That's bullshit. They call women 'fish' or 'cunt. Fish because of the supposed fishy smell of the vagina.

fuckitywhy · 14/02/2020 10:53

Fishy

adj. A term used to describe a drag queen who looks extremely feminine, or one who convincingly resembles a cis woman. The term is a reference to the scent of a vagina, which is colloquially likened to the smell of fish. Although the term is considered to be a compliment among Drag Queens, it is often considered to be an insult among non-drag women

I love RuPauls drag race. I also love to hear about the drags past and why they enjoy doing what they do.
If they enjoy it and it makes them happy I dont get why people cant accept it, as long as it's not thrown in their face

fuckitywhy · 14/02/2020 11:02

Well, loads of people enjoyed/enjoy things that aren't acceptable. Just because you enjoy something doesn't mean others have to "accept" it.

everybodyshowlove2020 · 14/02/2020 11:07

Have listen to this. Your either love it or hate it. Drag isn't all about looking pretty, it's also about making changes

To wonder if a lot of people are still against drag ?
fuckitywhy · 14/02/2020 11:08

Why do men need to mock/emulate women to make changes?

12345kbm · 14/02/2020 11:10

Here's some drag slang for you, dripping with misogyny:

Big Pink Furry Box
n. A vulgar reference to a woman's vagina, which is known as a "box" in slang terms, the big pink furry box is a prop used during RuPaul's Drag Race Untucked, which holds cards, photos, objects or clues to assist contestants during a party game, or before the playing of a video message.
Box
n. A slag term for a woman's vagina. One of many slang terms for vagina used on the show.

They're doing it because they love women. Hmm

fuckitywhy · 14/02/2020 11:19

Indeed. Can you imagine if you just loved black people the same way, complete with makeup, costumes and as many insulting variants of name as possible?

12345kbm · 14/02/2020 11:28

I didn't bother adding all the skanks, hos, pimps, sluts, hookers or hoochies because I didn't want to be cunty:

Cunty
adj. A woman who exhibits the qualities of being a "cunt."

or a Shady Bitch:
n. A woman who is critical in a blunt or insulting manner.

or a Diva:
n. A slang term or a self-important, demanding, temperamental, or difficult to please woman.

You'd never know this was all done in homage to women. They hide that really well.

Sagradafamiliar · 14/02/2020 11:31

'She looks like a woman but there's something fishy about her'

Oh god 🤣

Zurina · 14/02/2020 11:32

I call my own vagina a box/snatch/pussy/cunt/kitty so I don't get your issues with them.

Zurina · 14/02/2020 11:34

Also plenty of women call othet women divas, cunts, bitches, skets, skanks, sluts, slags, whores, hoes....

I'm misogynistic because of what I call my vagina? You're hilarious 😂

Fairenuff · 14/02/2020 11:39

This is in the same way that it's acceptable for people of colour to use the n word.

Do you not understand cultural appropriation and how drag mimics this.

Even in drag race they don't appropriate race or colour. But the whole show is about appropriating women. They might as well call the show Misogyny Race.

PileofToss · 14/02/2020 11:43

Drag queens themselves are often the biggest supporters of women and our issues. People who go to see drag queens are mostly women. It's not a question of making fun of us, it's about everyone having the opportunity to do what they want in life.

I think it's totally fine if people don't enjoy it or find it funny, but trying to find some sexist undercurrent is quite another thing.

12345kbm · 14/02/2020 11:43

@Zurina I don't take misogyny as a joke. Calling women slags, sluts and whores is nothing to be proud of. Call yourself what you like but don't reduce women to their genitalia. Calling a group of women a 'Pussy Party' or a Seafood Platter.

Are you one of those morons who doesn't think it applies to you?

steppemum · 14/02/2020 11:44

There are many many excellent male make up artists working within the fashion and media industry today, and that's been the case for decades. I don't mind a man in makeup. I grew up with the gender benders like Boy George, Marilyn (now THERE was a a beautiful man....). David Sylvian and his gorgeous brother Steve Jansen, the beautiful Steve Strange, David Bowie, Marc bloody Bolan. All of them gorgeous, all of them caked in make up and wearing flamboyant clothing and yet I never felt any of them were taking the piss out of women, or being disrespectful or spiteful. Drag is all of those things. It's perfectly possible, as the gentlemen mentioned above show, to be extravagant, arresting, flamboyant and dramatic without being a bitch.

^^ this. Absolutely

Zurina · 14/02/2020 11:44

This is in the same way that it's acceptable for people of colour to use the n word.

It's not the same. POC reclaim the word and don't give it a negative meaning. Mostly, if a woman shouts at you and calls you a sket then she isn't reclaiming the word to mean something positive, she's just calling another woman a dirty whore basically. Using "meeting my bitches later" would be more akin to "reclaiming" but women do use these words as insults.

Zurina · 14/02/2020 11:46

I don't take misogyny as a joke. Calling women slags, sluts and whores is nothing to be proud of. Call yourself what you like but don't reduce women to their genitalia. Calling a group of women a 'Pussy Party' or a Seafood Platter.

Oh fuck off. If someone pisses me off, I'm going to use whichever swear word I think will annoy them the most, and if it's a woman that's usually the ones mentioned above.

Sagradafamiliar · 14/02/2020 11:46

Women can be misogynists, too zurina.

Sagradafamiliar · 14/02/2020 11:49

Cross posted Shock. Disgusting but at least you own it.

EntirelyAnonymised · 14/02/2020 11:52

I absolutely HATE drag and agree with those who say it isn’t men celebrating anything. It is a grotesque mockery of womanhood.
