To wonder if a lot of people are still against drag ?

Shows like Drag Race have become incredibly popular. I have tickets to see the live show in May, and I think drag culture is amazing. It shows how far we have come that such a show is so popular on TV, and I think it should be celebrated.
I asked some friends if they wanted to come to the show with me and they very firmly and quickly told me that they were not fans of that sort of stuff.
When I was a teenager, I used to think Drag Queens were just some middle-aged men on Canal street with a blonde wig and high heels, and I was quite intimidated and scared of them in a way. I wonder if some people still feel that way, and don't judge them for it, just curious.

But sadly not surprising.

EC22 · 13/02/2020 21:34

Sexist, piss taking off women, no thanks!

Hagbeth · 13/02/2020 21:35

I don’t really cate as long as they don’t claim to be women.

MrsGrindah · 13/02/2020 21:43

Oh thank god it’s not just me that finds drag offensive. I don’t think I’d cool and accepting at all. I find it misogynistic and belittling. What so amazing and funny about a man in a wig? But I feel like I’m in the minority and not allowed to say that

Growingboys · 13/02/2020 21:48

It's so boring and pathetic.

AliceDownARabbitHole · 13/02/2020 21:50

Revolting men doing women face. No thanks.

rockingthelook · 13/02/2020 22:13

I absolutely love Drag , I've seen lots of acts in Manchester and Liverpool and as a straight woman have never felt intimidated by any of the men choosing to dress in this way, I've had a great evening, a good dance, sing and laugh. To all the people who say that the make up is garish or over the top, you should look at some of the really well made up men I have seen, their make up is impeccable, far better than mine :( their clothes very often hand made , with some lovely outfits. I have also seen some very badly dressed, almost parody style trans males who really struggle to achieve what they think a woman should wear or look like, but it's a case of each to their own, if no one is harmed where is the issue, if you don't want see drag, don't go to the clubs where it is open, simple really?

INXS998 · 13/02/2020 22:15

I agree, some of the outfits and make up are beautiful and the aim is to look 'realistic' not as a parody.

I do wonder of pp realise that they own dc may choose to use drag.
I think you can find a negative in everything, and with a lot of pp being parents maybe you should try an educate yourself.

It wasn't that long ago people raised their dc to hate gays. And those people had a lot of reason for it.
Also the same PP moaning about the disgusting abuse of a woman's image and the rude behaviour are probably supporting and shopping in stores that exploit women and children, but then it's easy to forget that when you get a good deal on that dress!

FredaFrogspawn · 13/02/2020 22:29

We can’t reject gender and say women are not defined by dresses, make up and heels then in the same breath reject men who dress in those things. Cross dressing as it used to be called has to be acceptable if we refute mere garments as the makings of a woman.

I think the femme man is fine. The twirls and the frills. No problem.

It’s the negativity to women that I find hard to stomach. That saggy tits thing - my god. Dripping with disgust and loathing for women.

AutumnRose1 · 13/02/2020 23:11

“ do wonder of pp realise that they own dc may choose to use drag.”

I’m sure they do. Just as my parents disliked most, if not all, of my life choices! 🤷🏻‍♀️

AutumnRose1 · 13/02/2020 23:13

Freda “ We can’t reject gender and say women are not defined by dresses, make up and heels then in the same breath reject men who dress in those things”

But who rejects men dressing that way? Employers have a long way to go, sure, but at the moment I see men wanting to say certain behaviour makes them literal women and that is a problem.

FredaFrogspawn · 13/02/2020 23:19

But that’s the point - drag queens don’t do that as a rule. They are men in femme clothing and accessories.

FredaFrogspawn · 13/02/2020 23:20

I’m not talking about transgender women. Just drag.

FredaFrogspawn · 13/02/2020 23:20

I mean - most of them traditionally are men and happy to be men.

20Newnames · 13/02/2020 23:27

never found drag funny or entertaining, even in Pantomime, it just doesn't tickle me.

But since reading up on the fish comments and really thinking about drag, well now I actively don't like it

This ^^

AutumnRose1 · 13/02/2020 23:28

Freda so you’re saying that “rejection” of drag is rejection of men in dresses?

There’s a massive difference between your mate in a dress just being him and a drag queen putting on show full of put downs aimed at women.

Actually I should bow out of this because it’s another issue that’s been problematised because....no, I can’t even say it, I’ll get banned.

Fairenuff · 13/02/2020 23:34

the aim is to look 'realistic' not as a parody

If that's the aim, they are failing Grin

FredaFrogspawn · 13/02/2020 23:35

I agree - I do see what you’re saying. But sometimes I think we aren’t accepting enough of men who want to dress in what have been seen as women’s clothes for so long. If it was just the norm to wear what you want when you want whatever sex you are, drag would lose its power.

Fairenuff · 13/02/2020 23:41

Those men don't just want to wear the clothes though. They want to pad their hips, bust and bum. They want to create a fantasy of what men think women are and be overtly sexual with it.

Look around. Real women aren't like that. Look at the women you work with, women in the supermarket, women just going about their daily business. They are nothing like these drag caricatures.

SewItGoes · 13/02/2020 23:51

No. Don't like it. Don't find it amusing or even interesting. Can't imagine ever going to a drag show, tbh.

MorganKitten · 14/02/2020 00:31

I hope those who don’t like it don’t watch American Horror Story - drag and trans performers one in a lead role last season, The greatest dancer - a coach/Judge is a drag performer or the new version of a star is born - drag performer in a role... it would be a tad hypocritical for you to like those... or the film Cabaret, oh and X flies and Twin Peaks.

And don’t see Cher live for quick costume changes she uses drag performers.

But hey ho...

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 14/02/2020 00:35

Sexist shite - hate drag

12345kbm · 14/02/2020 00:43

The only drag acts I've seen have been really spiteful men making nasty remarks about people. Telling women in the audience they have big thighs and taking the piss out of their outfits.

Some aspects of drag culture is deeply, deeply misogynist calling women 'fish' and 'cunt'. They don't like women very much at all. They seem to parody the worst stereotypes of 'femininity'; catty, nasty, playground behaviour. It just seems like another excuse for men to show their disdain for women. Hardly revolutionary in a misogynist society.

Helpinghim · 14/02/2020 00:46
