To not like paper straws?

It's the same for wet cotton wool. Makes my teeth go funny.

Any others?

I always drink with a straw. I have sensitive teeth so if I drink from a glass and the drink is cold it really hurts. A straw gets rid of that problem and I won't be giving them up.

Paper straws are awful and not for for purpose, same with metal. Plastic or silicone are fine.

belay · 12/02/2020 19:18

I have a stash of plastic straws bought from B+M. I carry a couple in my bag so don't have to use the horrid paper ones

Aridane · 12/02/2020 19:23

Papers straws - nearly as bad as wooden cutlery (aka blotting paper for the mouth)

poppyonastring · 12/02/2020 20:44

@Yesterdayforgotten

poppyonastring have you had the macdonalds daft coffee lids with the flap o ? They are by far the worst.

No, I don't think I have.

I am going tomorrow, so will see if I get one when I order a coffee!

QuestionableMouse · 12/02/2020 21:49

The flap on McDonald's cups locks down so you can drink but close it if needed.

Nowayorhighway · 12/02/2020 21:54

I hate them too, they’re absolutely rubbish. Has anyone tried a McDonald’s milkshake with one? It just collapses. Totally pointless, the bloody drink lids are still plastic!

AlanRickmanFanClub · 12/02/2020 22:14

Have you ever tried drinking out of a cup or glass? I last used a straw over fifty years ago.

Sparklingbrook · 12/02/2020 22:27

When you drink out of a glass (besides the lipstick problem) I also get a mouthful of ice. This is avoided when I use a straw.

We never had straws as children. Except in special occasions when we were in a pub garden with our glass bottle of Coke and a bag of Golden Wonder.

aroundtheworldyet · 13/02/2020 08:17

@Sparklingbrook
How wide do you open your mouth to drink! I would have thought any adult could avoid a mouthful of ice!

Wickedwoo · 13/02/2020 08:22

I don't particularly like them but they are much more environmentally friendly

Yesterdayforgotten · 13/02/2020 08:23

'The flap on McDonald's cups locks down so you can drink but close it if needed.'

Yes I know but when open it's hard to drink out of, worst lid ever.

Yesterdayforgotten · 13/02/2020 08:25

Starbucks have a lod where you just put a stopper in which closes it shut and works much better than the macdonalds flap.

heartsonacake · 13/02/2020 08:28

YANBU; I don’t like them either. I also don’t like the silicone or metal ones.

So I bulk buy plastic straws and take them around with me.

I will point out though that despite people hating paper straws, whinging to the staff at places that have them is just rude. They didn’t choose the policy and they’re sick of hearing it, and complaining to them isn’t going to change anything.

You offloading onto them about paper straws makes you feel good while making them feel like shit; don’t do it.

Yesterdayforgotten · 13/02/2020 08:29

NotGenerationAlpha I will try it when I get a coffee today, thank you. I like their coffee at least!

Sparklingbrook · 13/02/2020 08:29

Maybe a top lip full but if the ice is small you can definitely get a mouthful. Or not if you use a straw @aroundtheworldyet Wink Straw also serves as a stirrer.

Yesterdayforgotten · 13/02/2020 09:55

@Sparklingbrook especially if its crushed ice! And then I end up crunching it which isn't great for the teeth Shock

ACautionaryTale · 13/02/2020 10:05

I bought 2 catering pack of plastic straws at the end of last year.

So I have 10000 in my cupbard which I use.

I hate metal ones - they taste tinny
Glass ones if break
Silicon ones always end up smelly
Paper ones dissolve

We invented plastic straws for a reason.

Sparklingbrook · 13/02/2020 10:15

I went to Five Guys yesterday and they still do plastic straws. Mind you the prices they charge I would have liked gold plated!

YY @Yesterdayforgotten crushed ice is horrible if you don't have a straw.

SistersOfPercy · 13/02/2020 10:34

Cannot bear the touch of wood to my mouth, makes me physically come out in goosebumps and shudder. If I see a chef on TV tasting food with a wooden spoon it makes me gag. Ridiculous I realise but paper straws have the same effect.

I have some hard plastic which are ok and DS bought me some metal ones which aren't bad, but I mostly grab a handful to keep in my bag when I go near Burger King as they still do plastic straws.

Gingerkittykat · 13/02/2020 11:00

Burger King do a decent compostable straw. I've no idea what they are made from but they feel similar to plastic and don't go soggy.

Hellokittymania · 13/02/2020 11:05

I like the bamboo ones…
