To think he isn’t ‘just’ an animal?

My lovely, lovely little dog has to have a lump removed tomorrow.
He has had this fatty lump for a couple of months and I honestly thought it was a fatty lipoma so was absolutely shocked to hear the vet tell me on Saturday that it’s a mast cell tumour, it will need removing, sent to pathology and in a week we will find out what we are dealing with.
The vet did start to talk about what happens if it has spread and there was talk of possible radiotherapy or chemotherapy etc, which are obviously very expensive treatments. I would have to borrow the money for something like that tbh but he is the absolute joy in my life so I would definitely consider it.
However, dh says he says he wouldn’t want to put our dog through it and in all honesty what if we spend all that out and he doesn’t make it anyhow etc, that we have to think of the expense.
I’ve mentioned it to a couple of friends and several have said no way would they spend that kind of money, some wouldn’t even have the lump removed!! And according to them he’s only ‘just’ a dog at the end of the day.
This saddens me so much because these friends would quite happily spend thousands a holiday or something materialistic yet look at a beloved pet as something almost disposable.
I am a dog walker so spend a lot of time with dogs and I can honestly say they are nicer than a lot of humans I know!
So maybe I am BU but he’s been with me 8 years, he’s with me all day every day and has helped me though depression etc. I can not think of him las a nothing, to me he is a huge part of our family and not ‘just’ anything.

Another vet here, and in complete agreement with Vet on call! What a gorgeous wee guy you have Rhoda and you have done everything right so far. Wait for the results. MCTs are graded 1,2 or 3, and for grade 1 and 2 there may be no further treatment for now, so long as they got good margins.

I have literally loads of patients who have had MCTs cut out and are living happy normal lives. I also have some who have had chemo and who rush in happy to see us all each week, and have done well ( ie greater life expectancy than without chemo, no horrible side effects) I do take umbrage at a previous post upthread that suggested vets would put dogs through unnecessary or painful treatments just to make money (seriously????)

Hope your wee guy does well. Norfolk terriers rockSmile

I've seen a few dogs go thru chemo on Bondi Vet & the Supervet & they all had no issues & were eating bowls of chicken straight after as a treat. I'd research chemo on the link pp sent & think about your options when you have test result. My cat is family to me, but I'd think about quality of life more than cost.

I had my heart broken by a beautiful black and tan girl with big ears and a massive personality about four years ago she was twenty and followed by her 17 year old sister a year later. I still cry when zi think of them. I gave them my heart and got so much more in return. They were my family before I got married and our son came along amd continued to be front and centre after that. My husband loved them as much as I did and our son learned to walk with the "youngest" by his side. I get you OP wholeheartedly so. However I was very realistic about the time to say goodbye. It is the last and kindest thing tou can do for your treasured pal.

My beautiful girl had cancer twice once at 2 and then at 5, she never had chemo, but first lot of treatment was 8,000, 2nd time 12,000, but she is completely clear and happy. She went to a specialist cancer hospital. It is worth it, they are not just dogs, they are family. My girl got me through a debilitating breakdown, I can never thank her enough for that.

Rubyupbeat · 16/02/2020 20:58

Oh, both cancers were totally unrelated

JKScot4 · 18/02/2020 13:10

How’s the boy getting on? 🐶

BigPinkFlower · 18/02/2020 13:16

We didn't have our dogs lump done or treatment- she was fully insured but an 10 year old lab who hated the vets. She lived 2 more years- so ended up about right for a lab.

Zenithbear · 18/02/2020 13:21

Yanbu. He is lucky to have you.

auslass · 18/02/2020 13:25

YANBU - they're not just an aminal, they're a pet and an enormous source of love and wellbeing. I feel for you, our dog is very much a part of our family and we couldn't imagine things without him.

I really hope it's all ok xx

ChickLitLover · 18/02/2020 14:12

Hope he’s doing well OP.

RhodaCamel · 18/02/2020 14:22

He’s doing really well, bless him. It’s amazing how quick animals bounce back from these things. We have his check up on Thursday and they should have the results back by then, feel nervous as hell 🤞🤞

RhodaCamel · 19/02/2020 14:44

Just had the vet call to say the results have come back and it was all contained in the lump and nothing found in the margins 🤞🤞

what a sweet dog, and great news.

JKScot4 · 19/02/2020 15:21

@RhodaCamel
Fabulous news!!! All the worry over!!
Just keep an eye for any more lumps and whisk him straight in.

Goldengroveunleaving · 19/02/2020 15:40

Have only just seen this thread so wasn't aware of the lead-up to the surgery at the time, but just had to say I'm so very happy for you and your best friend.

ThisIsNotMyRealName1 · 19/02/2020 18:38

Fab newsRhodaCamel

littlealexhorne · 19/02/2020 20:45

Brilliant news! Glad he's bounced back well too

VetOnCall · 19/02/2020 21:59

That's great news Rhoda - the majority of MCT cases are resolved by surgery alone but I know it's a very anxious wait. I'm delighted that your little fella doesn't require any further treatment Smile

ChickLitLover · 20/02/2020 01:25

Great news, you must be so relieved. Animals really do bounce back very quickly, glad to hear he is doing well. Hope he’s fully recovered from his operation soon. Spoil him. ❤️

RhodaCamel · 20/02/2020 12:51

Thanks all 😊
