to think that if we want to build a big bridge, we should really do it from Dover to Calais

Rather than Scotland to Ireland.

Personally I don't think we should be building any bridge. But if Boris wants his bridge, then surely it would make sense to have a bridge from Dover to Calais.

Ok - so there's the waves.
And it's a very very very very busy channel with lots of ships.

But that's where the biggest markets are....that's where the transport links are.

I know we have ferries and a tunnel. But just imagine what a bridge would do...

Yabu

I want to be able to get to ireland without flying, and ferries are extortionate.

bsc · 10/02/2020 17:23

Do you not think that would lead to an increase of people in camps like The Jungle at Calais? And then people getting killed walking over the bridge?

chomalungma · 10/02/2020 17:24

Apparently Boris already wanted a bridge across the Channel a while ago

Other countries do have very long bridges linking countries.

Denmark - Sweden for example

Anyway, I presume this isn't actually possible? The Oresund bridge is only 5m (8km) long!

bsc · 10/02/2020 17:26

Ha! What a fortuitous x-post

Bezalelle · 10/02/2020 17:28

Now we're not in the EU, surely there would be massive checkpoints at each end.

chomalungma · 10/02/2020 17:38

It is possible. If people read the link then they would see it is possible. Just as possible ad the proposed Scotland to Ireland bridge.

If we are going to spend a vast amount of money on such infrastructure, then surely it should be on something that gives us the best economic potential.

StoorieHoose · 10/02/2020 17:40

Yeah fuck the rest of the UK and while we are at it we will make the ungrateful swines pay for it too like HS2

AriadnesFilament · 10/02/2020 17:44

Get a grip. There’s the bloody the euro tunnel.

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 10/02/2020 17:44

Why would we need a bridge when we already have the euro tunnel?
Why does everything have to be in the south?

I think a bridge linking Scotland to Ireland would be good. Bring jobs to parts of the country often forgotten about and a new link for imports as well as normal travel.

ShirleyPhallus · 10/02/2020 17:47

Why would we need the bridge when we already have the tunnel that goes through the middle of the sea and you can see all the fish and sea life when you’re on the train?

eddiemairswife · 10/02/2020 17:54

Boris likes bridges. He wanted the Garden Bridge over the Thames.

PettyContractor · 10/02/2020 18:13

The English channel is very shallow and the distance is not at all far for a bridge. I assume the main obstacle would be shipping.

It’s bollocks. All this bridge talk is just another dead cat Boris has lobbed onto the table to distract chat and column inches away from the fact that the government is trying to control the press.

That’s the real story.

VivaLeBeaver · 10/02/2020 18:22

Firstly after brexit there would be an uproar. Too many idiots in this country who voted for brexit as they want to pull up the drawbridge between “us and them” not build a bridge over the gap.

Secondly Boris does not have a good track history with bridges. I can’t see this happening.

cologne4711 · 10/02/2020 18:22

I was thinking I must be the only person who thinks a Scotland to Ireland bridge would be a good idea but see a couple of pp's agree with me.

The Danes and the Swedes built one across the Oresund and it's not very hospitable, so if they can do it there, I am sure it could be built across the Irish sea.

We already have the Channel Tunnel. To be honest I thought that was a stupid idea but after going through it about a year after it opened I was converted. I've not used it that often since, but more than the ferries. But I don't think we need a bridge as well.

I would actually propose a different variation - a tunnel between Scotland and Ireland. That's if we do need any more ridiculously expensive links between anywhere. The Scotland-Ireland bridge us one of the most ridiculous proposals I've heard of lately. If we are going to spend countless billions on a link for which there simply isn't the demand to justify the cost at least go for a solution that won't be closed every other day due to the wind.

I hope it goes between NI and scotland, like others have said the North deserve investment in infrastructure and the ferry crossings aren't nearly as easy, we use the crossing between Belfast to Liverpool and it's an overnight ferry in a cabin with two kids. Not fun.

ScurrilousSquirrel · 10/02/2020 18:33

Um, because NI is part of the UK, and the UK fucked any relationship with mainland Europe with Brexit... Hmm

TattiePants · 10/02/2020 18:34

A bridge between Scotland and Ireland would be great. I'd love to go to Ireland but I won't sail and DS won't fly so it's unlikely to happen.
