to think that if we want to build a big bridge, we should really do it from Dover to Calais

Rather than Scotland to Ireland.

Personally I don't think we should be building any bridge. But if Boris wants his bridge, then surely it would make sense to have a bridge from Dover to Calais.

Ok - so there's the waves.
And it's a very very very very busy channel with lots of ships.

But that's where the biggest markets are....that's where the transport links are.

I know we have ferries and a tunnel. But just imagine what a bridge would do...

Yes @lowlandLucky, it’s usually the first thing that comes up on the “what things didn’t you realise” threads. Along with center parcs not being under a dome and pineapples growing on the ground

longearedbat · 10/02/2020 20:02

@TattiePants why don't you fly, your oh take the car on the ferry and pick you up at the airport? Happiness all round and Ireland (all of it) is beautiful so well worth the trip.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 10/02/2020 20:09

Hilarious. England votes to leave EU and once they do they want to build a bridge to connect them to the EU. (Despite already having a direct route) you can’t make this shite up.

BackInTime · 10/02/2020 20:10

This is a great big Boris dead cat and will never happen for many reasons including because
It's a great big munitions dump
The weather would have it closed half the time
It would make HS2 look like value for money

Rockbird · 10/02/2020 20:15

Which roads on the island can barely cope? Not being arsey, just have been visiting the IOW for 20 years, many times a year at different times and have yet to see a truly busy road.

TattiePants · 10/02/2020 20:15

@longearedbad unfortunately DS wouldn't get on a boat either so unless we leave him at home, we'll have to wait a few more years.

mullyluo · 10/02/2020 20:29

@Nyoman its 8 hours belfast to liverpool, about 3 hours dublin to holyhead.

Izzabellasasperella · 10/02/2020 20:33

Rockbird most of the roads in and out of Newport at rush hour especially now that the Council in their wisdom have decided to get rid of the roundabout.
I live here and we don't want any more pesky Overners😊

As the OP said, I don't think we should build a bridge. I think there are many issues. But if we are going to spend a lot of money on infrastructure, then a link to our biggest trading partner - the EU - would make much more economic sense than the link to Northern Ireland.

Because that's where the bulk of the trade is.

The ferries and the trains are great. But how good would a simple bridge be.

I know Boris loves his bridges though.

I suppose the Hong Kong - Macau bridge would be the nearest counterpart

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hong_Kong%E2%80%93Zhuhai%E2%80%93Macau_Bridge

A 34 mile bridge / tunnel system.

to think that if we want to build a big bridge, we should really do it from Dover to Calais

I actually can’t believe how much is wrong in this paragraph.... Hmm

Northern Ireland is an actual country and part of the UK. Scotland is also an actual country and part of the UK.

England didn’t vote to leave the EU, the UK did.

kitk · 10/02/2020 21:46

Well that's v "let's protect the bit of Britain that affects me" nimby attitude...

Graphista · 10/02/2020 22:56

“Or the fact that the Republic is further north than any part of Northern Ireland” Oh don’t! That’ll REALLY cause confusion Grin

“England votes to leave EU and once they do they want to build a bridge to connect them to the EU.” Erm... I hope that’s meant to be irony! Fairly sure it’s already mentioned upthread that Northern Ireland is in fact part of the Uk and therefore no longer part of the EU - that’s the country Johnson is proposing the bridge go to not the Republic of Ireland which is a completely different country.

sweetkitty · 10/02/2020 23:00

An engineer was on FB stating that there is no way a bridge could ever be built, the sea is 1000feet deep in places, winds and storms too high, unexplored munitions. Never going to be feasible.

Vikki69 · 10/02/2020 23:31

Idiots?????

GrumpyHoonMain · 10/02/2020 23:36

It would benefit more people to build a bridge between Ireland and England or England and France. A Scotland to Ireland bridge is just benefiting a tiny percentage of British people

Tartyflette · 10/02/2020 23:40

For you. There are consultations taking place about this right now, you can still add your opinion.
Interesting videos showing the proposed route(s) on YouTube too.

safariboot · 10/02/2020 23:49

From both laypeople and experts there's an awful lot of defeatism.

It's reasonable to conclude such a bridge would cost more than it's worth. But to say it can't be done? No. It absolutely can. Does Britain not have the engineers to make it work any more?

ginghambox · 11/02/2020 00:16

What we need to build is a big fuck off wall. As in the film Doomsday,

sashh · 11/02/2020 07:05

How did the 'Garden Bridge' project go?

I can understand building a tunnel but not a bridge, not over the Irish Sea.

lowlandLucky · 11/02/2020 09:01

ShirleyPhallus What do you mean Centre parks isnt under a dome ! Grin

ExCwmbranDweller · 11/02/2020 09:17

safariboot as far as I'm aware no where in the world as yet has the engineers to either build bridge supports that deep (even ignoring the munitions - possible cantilever over that section?) or tunnel so low. I would love to be proved wrong though, projects like this are the reason obscure day time TV channels were invented. I can hear the voiceover man already.

Thedogscollar · 11/02/2020 09:21

Very busy shipping area just not possible due to this. We already have a tunnel and have far more important things to be spending our money on than this.
