Can you all just give my DH a sense check. He thinks this is a sensible idea. We're in Yorkshire and the wind and rain here is biblical

We’re in West Yorkshire too and have to go to the supermarket for the weekly food shop. It’s windy and raining, hardly catastrophic and life threatening.

mumwon · 09/02/2020 13:37

so we now have open plan garden on one side & something extra from in our garden from another neighbour & we are comparatively sheltered (inland country town east Anglia) the roads to next small town are out because of fallen trees - I keep remembering that actor from 'ello 'ello with the pole through his skull sudden gusts can occur at any time... the meteorology office has warned you why risk it unless neccessary

Wanteddownunder · 09/02/2020 13:44

Tell him you'll have his balls for dinner
Isn’t there a name for this?
Tetley springs to mind

Whereas so are we and we’re battling the constantly rising flood waters whilst the wind hampers the effort.

Pieceofpurplesky · 09/02/2020 13:46

My roof has leaked as tiles have blown off and the tree at the end of the road has blown down. I am NW. we are on e hilltop though

iem0128 · 09/02/2020 13:49

Have a look at recycling sites, a lot of stuff is from Ikea! LOL!

Is it worth making the journey!?

Goinglive · 09/02/2020 13:52

I'm in West Yorkshire. About 10 miles from IKEA Birstall. We've been out to take the kids somewhere very near to IKEA, we've had to reverse and try alternative routes all the way. A lot of the roads are flooded and impassable.

BikeRunSki · 09/02/2020 13:55

It's only a storm. Drive carefully, leave space, you'll be fine.

There are severity categories of storms, and in Yorkshire, it’s more than “just”. As one of their employees, I can assure you that the good people of the Met Office and Environment Agency do not spend their weekends monitoring and modelling the weather, and issuing warnings, because they have nothing better to do.

An Amber Weather Warning is issued when there is a threat to life:
Amber Warning: There is an increased likelihood of impacts from severe weather, which could potentially disrupt your plans. This means there is the possibility of travel delays, road and rail closures, power cuts and the potential risk to life and property. You should think about changing your plans and taking action to protect yourself and your property. You may want to consider the impact of the weather on your family and your community and whether there is anything you need to do ahead of the severe weather to minimise the impact.

Arrowfanatic · 09/02/2020 13:56

I really need to go out to food shop, but think I'll avoid it. Not because I'm worried to travel in it, it's not horrific where I am in Bucks, but because I really can't be arsed.

mrsBtheparker · 09/02/2020 13:59

Seems like the best time to visit IKEA, if it's the one on the M62 it's usually diabolical to get in and out of.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 09/02/2020 14:00

adaline
It's a little bit more than "just a storm"

Storm Ciara is most precisely a storm. A fairly severe one, but a storm.

However, if you go looking for trouble you might find it:

starfishmummy · 09/02/2020 14:03

Drive carefully, leave space, you'll be fine.

Because falling trees are always careful to land in the spaces.

Sheesh!!

SueEllenMishke · 09/02/2020 14:10

The police in West Yorkshire are advising only essential travel and are asking people to avoid the m62 if at all possible.
I don't think a trip to ikea is considered essential

letmebefrank · 09/02/2020 14:25

Several of the main roads around here are closed due to debris from roofs coming apart, downed trees and overturned lorries ... you're taking your chances of going nowhere fast.

Livelovebehappy · 09/02/2020 14:29

I’ve just ventured out in my little fiat when there was a lull, and it’s been fine. Think maybe the worst of it is finished in West Yorkshire? Was still pretty busy in Sainsbury’s.

windymillersmill · 09/02/2020 14:33

Was still pretty busy in Sainsbury’s.

That'll be all the preppers.

WhereShallWeMoveTo · 09/02/2020 14:40

Is he the sort of person who is the reason we have to have safety notices on everything?

That really made me laugh because I know exactly what you mean. Grin

Lovemusic33 · 09/02/2020 14:56

I wish I could go to ikea. We have been stuck in all day. Dc’s were meant to go to their dads but he couldn’t get to us as there were trees down and roads closed.mim getting cabin fever stuck in.

Averyyounggrandmaofsix · 09/02/2020 14:56

There's an Amber warning, people are being advised not to go out unless it's essential and we have known about it for days. I thought everyone has a fridge and most people a freezer these days so it's really not difficult to be prepared is it?

JacquesHammer · 09/02/2020 14:56

It’s come over very black and the wind is picking up again.

postopworry · 09/02/2020 15:01

are the "only a storm" people too young to remember 87 and 90 properly? There were people killed in both of them and Ciara is being compared to them in force? I remember Gordon Kaye, such a famous actor at the time, being affected for life by the tree that fell on his car :-(

JosefKeller · 09/02/2020 15:02

I thought everyone has a fridge and most people a freezer these days so it's really not difficult to be prepared is it?
very helpful when there's no electricity Grin

No, I don't know how long the power cuts will last!

AgathaVanHelsing · 09/02/2020 15:03

Sunny here suddenly in my little part of the East Midlands and the wind has dropped. Does this mean I am in the eye of the storm Confused

MitziK · 09/02/2020 15:03

One of my exes insisted on going out shortly after some strong winds (nothing like this) had started to die down - he had wanted to go out in the middle of it, but I deliberately faffed around, trying to persuade him to give it up as a bad idea. On one five mile stretch of main road, not raised, we ended up going past two HGVs that had literally been blown over and countless lumps of tree.

Without saying anything, just before we reached an area of forest, he turned around at a roundabout after stopping and waiting for another HGV to make it all the way over without flipping and drove back.

We passed three more HGVs on the way back that weren't there an hour before when we'd passed through.

One had the rear end of a car sticking out from underneath it.

AmelieTaylor · 09/02/2020 15:11

@windymillersmill

That'll be all the preppers

Unnecessary bitchy comment and preppers are the ones at home, with all they need, trampolines ties diwn etc ...not cluttering up the roads doing unnecessary journeys increasing the risk to those who have to travel and those out rescuing the numb nuts who just fancy a trip out.

@speakout 🙄. Whatever, we all know you’re just ‘too cool’ to be bothered by a bit of wind 🙄. Maybe spare a thought for people who are getting flooded or have had their roof blown off. Or perhaps the rescue services?!

@BikeRunSki for some people you might as well tell your colleagues to just draw some pretty pictures and issue random statements about rainbows 🙄 the rest of us actually DO appreciate what you do 🌷
