Can you all just give my DH a sense check. He thinks this is a sensible idea. We're in Yorkshire and the wind and rain here is biblical

I wouldn't, we're in Leeds and daughter just set off to do a food shop and she came back after ten minutes as the ring road is partially flooded and it's very windy. She is by no means a timid driver either.

HuggedTheRedwoods · 09/02/2020 12:00

I'm with you, it is needlessly risky to you and your childrens safety. Imagine if something bad were to happen and you'd been out there without needing to be. If he's determined to go, can't he go alone at least?

There is also potential knock-on effects of accidents further up the road say if a lorry were to be blown over you could end up sat in a tailback for hours.

Sickofrain · 09/02/2020 12:01

It's only a storm. Drive carefully, leave space, you'll be fine.

Boireannachlaidir · 09/02/2020 12:01

Is he after a Darwin Award by any chance? Tell him go alone. It sounds like a foolish thing to do for the sake of mass produced meatballs & playroom storage you can easily buy at any other time.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 09/02/2020 12:02

I'm in Yorkshire and loads of trees have blown down near me. Also, I read in the YEP that it's been upgraded from yellow to Amber danger to life. I really wouldn't go out if it's not essential.

Waitingforciara · 09/02/2020 12:02

It's only a storm. Drive carefully, leave space, you'll be fine. Possibly the most stupid bit of advice on the internet today

HuggedTheRedwoods · 09/02/2020 12:02

Just seen your update - good for you putting your foot down. Bloody daft to risk yourselves for meatballs!

mnahmnah · 09/02/2020 12:03

We’ve only nipped to Lidl and we’ve seen a tree down on the road, heavy bins rolling around etc. Apparently a trainline is closed because a trampoline blew onto it. I wouldn’t risk the motorway!

Stevienickssleeves · 09/02/2020 12:04

Its not that important. Make the roads safer for those who do have essential journeys by staying off them.

midgebabe · 09/02/2020 12:04

Why go if you don't have to? There are a lot of trees on roads round here..police issuing advice to only call 999 about them if there is an injury or threat to life as they are inundated. Any incident today just puts extra strain on the people keeping the roads open

Stevienickssleeves · 09/02/2020 12:07

.. we’re off on a 70 mile trip for a day out later.

Sarcastic handclap

SugarPlumLairy2 · 09/02/2020 12:07

The weather this morning was much milder but predicted to worsen so whilst going might not be too bad coming back is a different matter.

My FB feed is full of smug people posting about taking their kids on local park run, lovely walk with dog this morning etc, we’re in the S/E. Our Park is mainly flat green football pitches so not much chance of a branch dropping on you, and the wind has been blustery hardly storm like at all, but it’s getting progressively worse.

Personally much as I love my Ikea candles and meatballs I’d give it a miss. Not worth the risk to yourself ... or others who ignored the warnings.

adaline · 09/02/2020 12:09

It's only a storm. Drive carefully, leave space, you'll be fine.

It's a little bit more than "just a storm" Hmm

RHTawneyonabus · 09/02/2020 12:10

I was thinking Ikea might be a good place to go today as it is indoors and the kids like the fish and chips.

Ours is on the coast though so decided to give it a miss

TrappedInThatBrightMoment · 09/02/2020 12:10

Just back from160 miles on the m5 and m6 (we did it because we had to) and it wasn’t too bad, it helped that we started at 8 this morning so there was little traffic

mencken · 09/02/2020 12:11

fine, just don't come back blubbering if you are stuck for hours because of a crash, a tree down or a breakdown as the emergency services will be hopelessly overloaded today.

speakout · 09/02/2020 12:15

I'd go.

Ikea isn't a bad place to spend a couple of hours with kids on a day when weater is horrible.
A bit of lunch, walk around the showrooms, visit to the food shop.
Warm, a bit of fun, someone else to cook .
Excellent idea.

Jumpjumpjumper · 09/02/2020 12:16

And it's meant to get worse as the day goes on. So earlier journeys were ok. I had to do a necessary journey at 9am because I didn't want to leave it till later, when the weather was worse!

Unnecessary journeys are the ones that end in accidents. My mum told me this once, and she's right. Every accident I have had, bar one has been during a journey I didn't need to do.

2beautifulbabs · 09/02/2020 12:16

My DH has just left to also go to Ikea but Cardiff 🤣 we have no choice really my DS needs a new bed and mattress he's had a horrendous stomach bug which destroyed his mattress so getting him a single bed now

There will be loads of people those who work having to still go out in it so I can't see there being an issue

speakout · 09/02/2020 12:17

But I live in Scotland- so a bit of bad weather is not offputting.

If it were everyone would spend months indoors.

adaline · 09/02/2020 12:18

@2beautifulbabs plenty of local businesses around here (Cumbrian coast) are closed because staff can't get to work due to the weather.

midgebabe · 09/02/2020 12:20

But that's like snow in Scotland, people are used to it so know how to handle it.

Round here shop signs are falling off and such, because it's an highly unusual wind strength and so more stuff is likely to be affected than a similar wind strength in a place accustomed to it

windymillersmill · 09/02/2020 12:21

Tell him you'll have his balls for dinner if he's stupid enough to do it...and no, you don't mean the Ikea ones Grin

Sirzy · 09/02/2020 12:21

I am north west has to drive this morning and infact the motorways where the best bit it was the local roads which where a bit of a pain with debris around

I am due to go out again in a couple of hours at the moment I am still going but if it gets too wild I will reconsider

windymillersmill · 09/02/2020 12:22

It's only a storm. Drive carefully, leave space, you'll be fine.

@Sickofrain Where were you when common sense was handed out?
