To stay in all day to avoid the storm?

It seems like a waste of a day but I don't like the sound of these winds and am worried about trees coming down.

We have a 1 year old who only ever naps when taken out in the pram (I've never succeeded in getting him to sleep by jiggling the pram back and forth - he has to be taken around the block at least). Any ideas/tips on getting him to sleep without going out greatly appreciated!

I won't be going anywhere later today but we have an amber alert in place for our area. Unfortunately my DH has to go to work

millerjane · 09/02/2020 02:38

I have to walk my dog otherwise he gets upset - looking forward to that. Will avoid the woods for obvious reasons.

MrsP2015 · 09/02/2020 02:48

My 2y old and I will be having a day in tomorrow/ today (Sunday!)

Not worth the risk imo as it's not just the wind blowing things over (is your pram) that's the risk it's things the wind could blow into you/ your pram.

How do you get baby to sleep in an evening? Maybe try that?

I'd see that even though it may mess up the routine for 1 day it's a safety precaution.

It's an amber warning by me.

Amber here too and I won’t be going anywhere other that 2 essential short journeys that I need to do. They’re advising to avoid all non-essential travel and that includes walking.
I can see it may mess up your routine a bit but I don’t think the risk is worth it.

happymummy12345 · 09/02/2020 03:18

I won't be going out at all, day in for ds dcat and I. Dh has to go to work unfortunately. Will be worried until he gets there and gets home again

Copperas · 09/02/2020 03:19

Planning to stay in making marmalade!

Spacerader · 09/02/2020 03:21

I have no intention of leaving the house at all, we have planned a day in. The only time I will go out is to pick dd off from her friends and to drop dsd home at the end of the day.

1forAll74 · 09/02/2020 03:44

I think it's maybe up in Scotland were the gales will be worse.

TillyTheTiger · 09/02/2020 03:59

We've cancelled plans and we're staying in too. Amber warning so not worth the risk!
What works to get DD to sleep is putting on some white noise, getting her into the sling and then having a gentle dance or rocking her until she drops off... appreciate that's a more arduous task with a 1yo but if you have a sling it would probably still work?

iamhopeful · 09/02/2020 04:09

Mainly a day in here, daughter has just been sick, will have to entertain her brother (4) but will have to pop out for the food shop as I won’t be able to nip out on my day off tomorrow. Otherwise in to avoid the wind, it’s already pretty wild out there

NemophilistRebel · 09/02/2020 04:14

Staying in too

DH is running an errands in the morning and not at all taking the amber warning seriously

Florin · 09/02/2020 04:17

Carrying on as normal for us, ds has a horse riding lesson to go too.

sam221 · 09/02/2020 04:20

I will be staying in, baking a little and generally ready to watch old episodes of Murder She Wrote/Columbo. I have charged up mobile and laptop-incase of a power outage, torches at the ready.
I would avoid going out today unless you really must, maybe some gentle ocean sounds could help the baby to sleep?

PhilCornwall1 · 09/02/2020 06:09

Where I am, it's mental out there, we'll be going out later, no reason to stay in. Probably a trip around the beaches to see what's going on and a drink at our favourite beach bar.

WobblyAllOver · 09/02/2020 06:12

Staying in today as amber warning and the last time we had a storm someone was killed close to us when a tree fell on their car so I am conscious now that these warnings should be taken seriously. If there isn't a need to travel then why do so.

AutumnRose1 · 09/02/2020 06:26

I’m staying in

Missing a £5 event that I booked but don’t want to travel!

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 09/02/2020 06:28

I’m not a worried about these things generally but think I’m staying in and not even walking the dogs! Too much risk from falling trees/debris.

Wouldn’t dream of taking a pram out

Auramigraine · 09/02/2020 06:32

Not going out today either, it’s already very wild here!! 2 year old woke by it at 4am so will be very grumpy later hopefully will manage get them to nap, feeling your pain! OH has had to go to work. Wouldn’t risk going out if you don’t need to.

AlandAnna · 09/02/2020 06:34

Staying in. Could you rock the pram back and forth indoors?

mynameiscalypso · 09/02/2020 06:40

If it was just me, I'd go out (although am slightly concerned that the 10k that DH was doing has been cancelled and all of the parks are closed as a precaution!) but I also have a baby in a pram and I'm worried about that. Plus the baby absolutely hates wind.

whatswithtodaytoday · 09/02/2020 06:41

I usually do the afternoon nap in the pram, but he'll always sleep on me so I'm planning to do that today. He only has half an hour though.

helberg · 09/02/2020 06:43

No don't go out. It's not an essential journey and it's too risky.
Your baby not sleeping is a very minor problem which is nothing compared to the possibility of a horrible accident occurring and he might not sleep anyway if it's blowing a gale outside.

fairydustandpixies · 09/02/2020 06:44

Amber here too, the wind sounds horrendous outside. Staying in but I might cling to my fence to stop it blowing down at some point - if it's not already disappeared!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 09/02/2020 06:46

My dd once told me, when leaving him with me, that Gds at about the same age would only nap if taken round the block in the pram.

But it was a miserable day so I instead I put the pram facing a window where he could see trees, and put Classic FM on. There was a little bit of grumbling - not actual crying - but he fell asleep very quickly. Whether that was down to Elgar’s cello concerto I can’t say but there was peace for well over an hour. 🙂

SlippersAndThePaper · 09/02/2020 06:47

We’ve got a meal booked later for a birthday celebration so we’ll be out at lunchtime. Im not missing it!
