To refuse to send my child to a pirate party

A nursery friend of my 4 yo DS is having a pirate themed birthday party. I’m planning to decline the invite as I don’t think it’s appropriate for little children, or anyone for that matter, to dress up as a pirate - it’s glorifying and sentimentalising criminal men who raped, robbed and murdered.

FFS, piracy used to carry the death penalty until recently! You wouldn’t let your child go to a Nazi themed party - I can’t see much difference!

What is this Daily Mail you speak of?

Marold · 08/02/2020 19:54

Sorry, should have said the Telegraaaagh.

Letsnotusemyname · 08/02/2020 19:57

I quite agree.

My dp was a history consultant.

She visited primary schools helping, advising, rewriting their history curriculum, schemes of work etc.

Piracy isn't anywhere on the national curriculum, although scholls can choose to add stuff if they wish.

Academies and free schools do not have to follow the NC (not sure why/don't get me started/another discussion for another day)

It was amazing/shocking just how many primary schools did a chunk of work on pirates. ( But never any mention of Somalis, or the romance of drug running?)

I don’t think any schools continued with it after her visits.

My, adult, daughter was a y1 teacher - her school had pirates on the history planning. She never did it.

Its just a bit hard to explain to your child who may see it as missing out. My children never had a pirate party or dressed up inappropriately on world book days.

Nope haven't heard of that one either. I am not a native of these shores (though have been here for a number of years) Personally don't read any of the trashy British newspapers and actually have an opinion that is based on my own findings and not that of some media mogul

TubbyPony · 08/02/2020 20:00

This thread is pure pirate treasure gold! Grin

voddiekeepsmesane · 08/02/2020 20:03

I do wonder how my almost 16yo DS has managed to be ok when I forced upon him pirate, power ranger, peppa pig (talking animals?), and Thomas the tank engine parties on him when younger!

I don't suppose the curriculum on Romans in primary school concentrated much on their mass crucifixions, orgies, genocides and enslavement of many people and races either? Probably just concentrated on making a shield out of papier mache and learning Roman numerals.

Seetheprettysnowdrops · 08/02/2020 20:04

OP, what sort of party do you plan on having for your own DS?

Bankers
Morris dancers
WRI

RogueV · 08/02/2020 20:04

🤣

ThankYouStavros · 08/02/2020 20:05

Poor kid

thunderthighsohwoe · 08/02/2020 20:09

I know the OP was a troll but at the school
I teach at we have a few parents who genuinely raise these kinds of issues.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but it’s awful seeing the children become ostracised once their peers get older and inevitably come to the conclusion that the parent in question is batshit.

Saddler · 08/02/2020 20:10

Surely this is a wind up

PolloDePrimavera · 08/02/2020 20:11

I'm offended that you've assumed the pirates identified with being male.

voddiekeepsmesane · 08/02/2020 20:12

It is Saddler but what I find batshit is the posters agreeing!!

Atilathehunter · 08/02/2020 20:13

🙄 is about all I have to say to the original post.

kitk · 08/02/2020 20:15

Dear lord! Okay OP, do what you want but bear in mind that your attitude will affect your child's friendships and play dates moving forwards. If you don't mind other parents leaving your kid out cos you're a fruit loop then carry on

Noodlenosefraggle · 08/02/2020 20:15

Never did DS any harm. He's got to 14 without plundering amp armada or marauding anyone.
Yeah come back in 10 years when hes overthrown the monarchy, invaded France and we all live in the Peoples Republic of sonofikboo.

Toadsrevisited · 08/02/2020 20:17

The offensive bit is the fact that it's a 'birthday' party, surely OP? Celebrating a baby coming out of a foof? Blood and shit and stuff? A baby made from actual bonking? Disgusting. The pirate theme is the least of your worries....

iklboo · 08/02/2020 20:19

@Noodlenosefraggle - Grin. As long as he gives me and his dad a cut....

Noodlenosefraggle · 08/02/2020 20:25

Or Monaco?

Petals000 · 08/02/2020 20:27

Ur a wierdddoooo

gingerbiscuits · 08/02/2020 20:31

Get. A. Grip!

voddiekeepsmesane · 08/02/2020 20:37

@Letsnotusemyname dressed up inappropriately on world book days WTF www.amazon.co.uk/Pirates-Love-Underpants-Claire-Freedman/dp/085707265X?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_5&tag=mumsnetforu03-21 or www.amazon.co.uk/Pirates-Pyjamas-Caroline-Crowe/dp/184869136X?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_6&tag=mumsnetforu03-21 are just two great books I can think of. Surely any fiction is just that FICTION does not mean it is inappropriate

VestaTilley · 08/02/2020 20:38

NOW I've heard it all!

DumpedByText · 08/02/2020 20:41
