To refuse to send my child to a pirate party

A nursery friend of my 4 yo DS is having a pirate themed birthday party. I’m planning to decline the invite as I don’t think it’s appropriate for little children, or anyone for that matter, to dress up as a pirate - it’s glorifying and sentimentalising criminal men who raped, robbed and murdered.

FFS, piracy used to carry the death penalty until recently! You wouldn’t let your child go to a Nazi themed party - I can’t see much difference!

BennytheBall · 08/02/2020 18:58

Thank you OP - I've been reading your post and some of the comments aloud to my son and it has given us a great laugh.

mumtumdocare · 08/02/2020 18:58

YAB ridiculous.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 08/02/2020 18:59

And so the batshittery begins . . . Confused

I pity your son.

thewayoftheplatypus · 08/02/2020 18:59

OP is clearly batshit, but I can’t be the only one throwing a 4 year old pirate party in the next couple of weeks with unanswered invites wondering if shes one of the mums from her nursery! 😂

TonytheDog · 08/02/2020 19:00

Dahl she's probably on supaaaaaaaar glue.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 08/02/2020 19:00

iklboo · 08/02/2020 19:01

Never did DS any harm. He's got to 14 without plundering amp armada or marauding anyone.

eaglejulesk · 08/02/2020 19:09

Lighten up and get over yourself! I feel for your child.

GlitterMagicPompom · 08/02/2020 19:10

OP. I think you may have to accept that your attitude to pirate parties is somewhat unique. I don’t know anybody who objects to these. You are of course free to think as you do and raise your child as you see fit. I do wonder though what party theme you would feel confortable sending your DS to though? Genuine question; not trying to needle.

Lipperfromchipper · 08/02/2020 19:11

OP...this made me laugh out loud so much... thanks for the laugh 😂

Lanurk · 08/02/2020 19:11

I bet you’re fun at parties Grin my daughter had a rainbow party and one of the parents declined because she’d “had enough of the lbtqrstuv” (her words, not mine). My daughter is 6. She just likes rainbows 🤷🏼‍♀️

Lweji · 08/02/2020 19:23

I'm surprised nobody thought of calling it discusting.

Well... that's disgusting.

Jojobythesea · 08/02/2020 19:31

@Mockersisrightasusual HAHAHAHAHAHA 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Lilymossflower · 08/02/2020 19:32

I actually get your point and have wondered myself in the past, why pirates are seen as an OK for kids while In the world real current pirates who exist are violent and etc.
I think however it is because back in the 1800's or so, pirates in newspapers and etc became a figure of rebellion against the equally or more violent (at the time) authority. Back when the government where dumping petty thieves in Australia and hanging them for small crimes (like stealing food when hungry)
So the pirate became a romantic figure of bravery and gave the people hope etc. Then watered down over time became seen as fun kids dressing up character, with the contribution of Peter pan stories etc.
And the dressing up pirate figure looks a lot different to current day real life pirates who have an entirely different context to them. So I get why it is the way it is and wouldn't exclude my child from a pirate party , though I would give them the options of dressing as a pirate or a mermaid or something to stay with the fantasy theme

SW16 · 08/02/2020 19:38

I have sent my Dc to many parties over the years dressed as English People

Is it any wonder that they have re-started the slave trade, colonisec several countries (with attendant massacres) and nicked a load of priceless antiquities from god knows where? Last I heard they had introduced some Western diseases somewhere too. Shock

Honestly, I should have known better. Blush

lalafafa · 08/02/2020 19:43

Captain Pugwash was alright.

voddiekeepsmesane · 08/02/2020 19:47

Even my 15yo calls Millennials "snowflakes" please please try to get over yourself Hmm

iklboo · 08/02/2020 19:48

Mermaids are actually vicious murderous creatures in mythology. Bugger all like Ariel and her singing sea food salad Grin

voddiekeepsmesane · 08/02/2020 19:51

@iklboo sometimes I do wish there was an equivalent of a like button on here sometimes

Marold · 08/02/2020 19:52

As noted by HQ, this is a troll thread, designed to provoke 'snowflake' bashing.

Glad the daily mail readers are having their fun though.
