To refuse to send my child to a pirate party

A nursery friend of my 4 yo DS is having a pirate themed birthday party. I’m planning to decline the invite as I don’t think it’s appropriate for little children, or anyone for that matter, to dress up as a pirate - it’s glorifying and sentimentalising criminal men who raped, robbed and murdered.

FFS, piracy used to carry the death penalty until recently! You wouldn’t let your child go to a Nazi themed party - I can’t see much difference!

Poor kid
You aren’t going to help her make friends with that attitude
Unless there will be any actual raping and pillaging going on I wouldn’t worry about it.

Good lord, kids dress up as pirates all the time! It won’t make them rape and pillage

Butteredtoast55 · 08/02/2020 15:05

You have a complete right to your opinion but I think that's ridiculous.

Bluntness100 · 08/02/2020 15:05

Lol

TheQueef · 08/02/2020 15:06

Yep.
Yabu.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 08/02/2020 15:06

I think they will be more likely to play pass the parcel and musical statues than rape and murder each other. You could always clarify that with the parents though.

MrsReacher85 · 08/02/2020 15:06

I hope this isn’t my DD’s party as I’ve just sent a load of invites and haven’t heard back from a few of the boys yet... Confused

GreenTulips · 08/02/2020 15:06

Well my children’s will never become unicorns, or princesses or dragons, unlikely to be a tart or vicar, or a super hero.

Doubt they’ll be a baker so that’s cup cake parties out as well.

dementedpixie · 08/02/2020 15:06

You're a bit of a killjoy then

SquashedOrange · 08/02/2020 15:06

Kids like to play all sorts of characters 'goodies and badies' it's all perfectly normal child development.

You however are odd.

BlueVeins · 08/02/2020 15:06

🤣

Lol. Good luck when Halloween comes round!

Voxx · 08/02/2020 15:07

Oh for God’s sake.....Hmm

Talk about first world problems OP.

GreenBasket · 08/02/2020 15:07

Brilliant.

Geminijes · 08/02/2020 15:07

Don't let him go then.

The only person missing out will be your son...missing the party and missing having a sane parent...poor boy.

ReturnofSaturn · 08/02/2020 15:07

This has to be a wind-up.

TheVanguardSix · 08/02/2020 15:07

Shit. I was about to invite your kid to my Pol Pot Lego party this year.

VettiyaIruken · 08/02/2020 15:07

Give over.

Justajot · 08/02/2020 15:07

I find the pirate thing weird - it's like kids will be dressing as terrorists in 400 years time. But I don't let that get in the way of my DC having fun, that would be even weirder.

leghairdontcare · 08/02/2020 15:08

You don't know me!

Depends on the cultural meaning of pirate in your community. If you're in Somalia I quite agree. If you're outlawing Peter Pan etc I do get your point but find it a bit ridiculous. There will be bigger things to feel strongly about and veto. Your child will miss out on other things down the line because you genuinely have an insurmountable issue with it. We don't do sleepovers, for instance. But every veto comes with a price tag for your child so think carefully.

Haggisfish · 08/02/2020 15:08

Arf arf

GreenTulips · 08/02/2020 15:08

Good call.
