YANBU. But so was Carrie.

However, in the film when he stood her up at the altar, just made me hate him tbh. And they re-wrote history as she just wouldn't have stayed with him if he'd done that in the series (as in the Carrie we saw the whole way through SATC). Was so annoying will never get over this Grin

FudgeBrownie2019 · 07/02/2020 13:52

Oh no, Berger was a dick, that anger towards his ex, the wanky dolphin sounds, the postit note. I truly believe they found the most vile collection of humans for Carrie to date because they wanted us to look back and realise that vile meets vile; she was awful and attracted awful.

AriadnesFilament · 07/02/2020 13:55

Well, she was horrible too so they were well matched! She was a shit girlfriend, a crappy friend......I could go on, but I CBA

nevermorelenore · 07/02/2020 13:57

Big had an abrasive personality but he was honest about what he wanted and who he was. It wasn't his fault Carrie chose not to listen and threw tantrums/stalked him and his mother in church because she wanted more. I feel like in later seasons, they had to make him more of a dick so that Carrie didn't seem so unreasonable.

He wasn't even going to leave her at the altar in the movie. He had a temporary freak out because the wedding was out of control but was going back. I hated the second movie too, where she got mad just because he wanted to watch TV and stay in occasionally.

DoSomethingBob · 07/02/2020 13:58

Yeah, Aiden was a crap character but I had a huge crush on John Corbett (starting with Northern Exposure, Chris was so lovely) that like a couple of other posters, I couldn’t hate him in Sex and the City.

kenandbarbie · 07/02/2020 13:58

Yes but she was stupid to put up with that shit.

user1479305498 · 07/02/2020 14:05

Blimey- I thought Aiden was totally fabulous ,some on here must have different ideas about controlling to me. Mr B, well a bit of a dick but so was Carrie. I still love the show to be honest, however the one thing I thought was lousy was the obsession with people’s job titles and salaries. ‘William was a VP at Goldman sachs’ Kind of thing as an intro to someone. I also thought Steve and Miranda were both lovely real characters.

MrsToothyBitch · 07/02/2020 14:27

Berger had issues! He wasn't nice at at all. If anyone posted about his behaviour on here the advice would be LTB/he's a dick. Aleksandr also mean and judgy and controlling.

Carrie has moments of being a good friend which show why the girls stick with her- plus rubber necking value. I actually think everyone ended up with the person they deserved, although they shouldn't have done the movies.

Steve needed to grow up, Miranda needed to be less uptight. They were opposites attracting and brought balance to each other. Carrie got commitment from Big when HE was ready, right on cue, which fulfills her desire for A Man, ANY MAN and her desire for Big which never quite abated- we're left feeling it might be misplaced. Sam got a partner on her own terms and got support and respect from him. Charlotte discovered that perfect is a myth/a dream but got the perfectly imperfect normality she craved. She learnt to enjoy what she'd got and appreciate it. Plus Harry was a darling Smile- my favourite.

Series Carrie would've ditched Big for leaving her at the altar though, I think. Although series Carrie would've had Charlotte or Miranda or Sam telling her to dial it back, eventually listened to Big and just about avoided the whole bouquet-bashing brou-haha by the skin of her teeth. I love the closet clear out scene though. My walk-in/dressing room never held such treasures! Sad

Ronia · 07/02/2020 14:36

@WombOfOnesOwn me too! Always loved Aidan because he was Chris Grin

ElloBrian · 07/02/2020 14:47

CHRIS IN THE MORNING! Omg so good to find other Northern Exposure fans ...

As for SATC, I always assumed it was meant to be a cautionary tale of what not to do in life. If you watch it with that in mind, it all makes so much more sense.

notalwaysalondoner · 07/02/2020 14:49

I always thought Carrie was intentionally neurotic and often unlikeable and that was partly what made the show so great - she isn’t a heroine, she’s imperfect and often desperate and self centred, like we all are at times. Between them the four women have characteristics all women can relate to, but I think Carrie was in some ways the real everywoman who can be fun and silly but also self-destructive and unpredictable.

I never felt she had any chemistry with Big and didn’t understand the casting. If it had been Aidan as her big love story I would have been gunning for it, but Big? I just never got it.

I loved the Sam and Smith final couple, thought it was lovely how she just saw him as a pretty sex object but gradually realised how much he could be to her and he had the patience to wait until she was ready to let him in. Steve and Miranda I also loved as he was the laid back family man to her stressed out career girl. Harry and Charlotte I could see why they did it, but I could never really believe the story - think they should have invested a bit more time building up the romance.

I literally finished rewatching the whole series this week when I had flu!

notalwaysalondoner · 07/02/2020 14:56

Also, in terms of aging, I feel the show overall has stood up quite well except the gay stereotypes are seriously painful. All the gay characters are just caricatures, the “gay best friend” and some of the comments made about or to them would just never get said these days.

ItsAllTheDramaMickIJustLoveIt · 07/02/2020 14:59

Carrie and Big deserved each other they were both equally awful. Big was a tiresome commitment phobe but Carrie was a shitty friend to everyone at some point or other.

Dozer · 07/02/2020 15:04

All awful! Enjoyably so at the time though.

The best of the men IMO was Smith Jarrod!

Dozer · 07/02/2020 15:04

And Harry.

amatsip · 07/02/2020 15:15

Samantha and Smith, my fave pairing.

MrsPotatoHeadsSheeWee · 07/02/2020 15:16

There was more than a hint of Trump in Big's character.

SATC took major themes from this book. The Group (VMC) (Virago Modern Classics) www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1844085937/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_o8xpEbDASAHTY?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Polowithoutahole · 07/02/2020 15:17

I like to pretend the films dont exist. Neither of them made any sense and reversed so much of the character growth in the series. Steve cheating on Miranda because she spent too much time working? Fuck right off with that one.

dayswithaY · 07/02/2020 15:39

I love Carrie and always will. Of course she's self obsessed, but that's because she's a creative soul, a writer, a romantic. She was also incredibly kind and good fun. I loved her clothes, Patricia Field was the stylist and they were way ahead of their time. Before that, women in American TV shows wore power suits with sleek hair. Carrie wore original Halston dresses from the 1970s with her gorgeous curly hair. She was vulnerable but tough and she loved her friends, even though I never understood her obsession with Big, as they got older they suited each other better, I think. For me, episodes in Paris are visually perfect and beautiful - her clothes, the Parisian streets.

If the friendships between the four women seem a little off it could be because the writers were gay men (they were adapted from Candace Bushell's book but she didn't write the show.) I love Carrie but I understand she is divisive.

Iamthewombat · 07/02/2020 15:49

Excellent deployment of ‘acopic’ @Letsallscreamatthesistene

MargotsBumpyNight · 07/02/2020 16:00

They all seemed to be caricatures of New York types. I think Carrie seemed more selfish as it was essentially her blog so of course everything reverted back to her. The others seemed to grow across the series. Miranda was my favourite. The scene of her washing Steve's mum in the bath gets me everytime!

I also need to rewatch Northern Exposure now Grin

NewYearsRevolution2020 · 07/02/2020 16:01

Oscar da la Renta, ladies. That’s what she saw in him.

NewYearsRevolution2020 · 07/02/2020 16:02

Yes to Northern Exposure - what was the dr called?

Langsdestiny · 07/02/2020 16:11

I thought Big was a really accurate portrayal of a certain type of man. He was unbelievably sexy.

dayowl · 07/02/2020 16:17

Smith and Miranda are the only ones I like.
