To think Big was a twat?

Rewatching SATC on Sky Comedy and I forgot how much of a twat Big was with Carrie! Angry

Aidan was much better

I still think it’s brilliant in many ways and always disliked Carrie

I might not even have seen it if not for my New York days.

The structure, dialogue, characterisation, zeitgeist, city as fifth character remain brilliant.

But it was a long time ago, I’ve been advised not to go back to NYC as it has gone downhill much the same way as London apparently.

I still quote Carrie frequently on one thing - “I stopped watching television when people started putting leeches in their pants”.

Belindabelle · 07/02/2020 00:10

Total twat.

You should have done a vote op for this.

Waterandlemonjuice · 07/02/2020 00:10

I do agree that it was brilliant in many ways and I have rewatched it several times, even last year. There are some very funny scenes and it was very honest about sex at a time when it wasn’t discussed as openly as it is now.

Waterandlemonjuice · 07/02/2020 00:10

Total twat but I would have. Definitely. 😂

MrsToothyBitch · 07/02/2020 00:11

I prefer Big to Aidan on the personality front; Aidan was sulky- but he was also way too straight forward and nice for Carrie!

Big has his moments of being a monumental, deal breaking dick but essentially is honest with Carrie at the start about having been round the block and not necessarily wanting to go round it again. Plus he makes me laugh more than Aidan & I find him sexier and richer. It's the way she doesn't listen to him that mostly causes problems. The adultery is unforgivable to me but I can see how he might've fallen for Natasha & made a mistake, although it doesn't excuse cheating. Carrie is self centred though- it's very easy to see!

I'm 29 & dating in London. Most of my girlfriends are single and I honestly don't think it's aged that badly. It addresses dilemmas that come up again and again in dating and fundamentals of human behaviour. Plus who hasn't occasionally been Carrie with their drama? I still enjoy it. I'm a total Charlotte btw!

kittykatkitty · 07/02/2020 00:15

I loved Harry. Fancied the pants off Big.
SATC got me into bags and shoes.
I ate dust for a month so I could get a Fendi Baguette bag

Josette77 · 07/02/2020 00:19

He was pretty honest from the start. She never listened to him.

morrisseysquif · 07/02/2020 00:24

So he couldn't give a needy man's woman who' d drop a friend when he winked what she wanted? Thank fuck for that.

Mamboitaliano · 07/02/2020 00:25

Still love SATC and love all the characters, including Carrie, Aidan and Mr Big. Big over Aidan though, for sure.

Aurignacian · 07/02/2020 00:30

Sex and the City was of it’s time and groundbreaking in many ways. But Big always an arsehole.

Aurignacian · 07/02/2020 00:31

All the men were a bit shit tbh. Charlotte’s later partner was my favourite (I forget his name).

pallisers · 07/02/2020 00:36

Aidan wasn't nice. He was a controlling punishing bastard. He is my least favourite character on the show.

Big was an arse. She should have walked away after the first date.

I think if you ignore the two awful films (only watched the first one - what a mistake!) the series was pretty interesting and I did love how it put women wanting good sex out front and centre.

Seasalted · 07/02/2020 00:38

Yeah Big was smug and he treated her badly but she kept going back for more. Aidan loved himself. Didn't like Carrie. Charlotte really uptight. Sam got on my nerves towards the end. Another vote for Miranda. Why did I bloody watch it then?! (scratches head)

EstebanTheMagnificent · 07/02/2020 00:44

Carrie is awful. Remember when she manipulated Charlotte into giving her the downpayment to buy Aidan out of the apartment because (as they ‘hilariously‘ reminded us) she had spent all of her money on shoes?

AutumnRose1 · 07/02/2020 00:46

Esteban

I’ve never forgotten it. When I felt I was failing at everything, I used to think, well at least I didn’t blow my flat deposit on shoes!

GlummyMcGlummerson · 07/02/2020 00:47

He was a twat but she still didn't deserve him, worst TV character ever! So self absorbed and a terrible friend. Whenever someone would tell her their problem she'd ALWAYS turn it back round to herself. And we were meant to believe she was the glue that held the group together Hmm

BarbedBloom · 07/02/2020 00:47

I always hated it. I couldn't identify with any of them. I thought carrie in particular was selfish, vain and self obsessed, also manipulative. Big was awful too. They deserved each other

TheSoapyFrog · 07/02/2020 00:52

He wasn't half as much of a twat as Carrie was. When Carrie pretty much demanded Charlotte gave her her engagement ring to sell because Carrie spunked all her money away on shoes and had no savings was really the depths.
Right down there with cheating with Big, confronting Nstasha and trying to make herself look like the hard done by victim in it.

danadas · 07/02/2020 00:53

Carrie was awful. The way she kicked off on Charlotte for not offering to lend her money, the way they all fucked off Miranda when she had the baby and the neediness of her.

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 07/02/2020 00:54

Big was the twat we all hate to love.

Aiden was a nauseating, whingy wuss.

I found it fascinating that the central character, Carrie, was so awful.
"Imperfect" I suppose so we're all supposed to identify?

Charlotte was just a posy princess, never understood why Harry, well just, why Harry.

Loved Samantha, and she had the best bloke.

Smith.

And blew it!

AutumnRose1 · 07/02/2020 01:00

Seasalted you probably watched it for the comedy, the recognisable situations, the one liners.

“I don’t understand when people leave New York - where do they go?”

“Who ever heard of Mrs Up the Butt?”

“Honey, they don’t call it a job for nothing”.

“You will be in my show if I have to skin you and fucking wear YOU”.

And finally, Alan Cummings as O “I’ll give you a surprise, love”.

😂

AutumnRose1 · 07/02/2020 01:01

Xpost
Samantha left Smith because she wanted to be single again.

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 07/02/2020 01:02

Oh, and loved Miranda, but again, for different reasons, why Steve.

Another nauseating whinger.

IHaveBrilloHair · 07/02/2020 01:03

In the first season, Big was fine, Carrie was a PITA.
As time went on he was a bit of a shit, but she was a fucking nightmare.
Miranda was great though.

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 07/02/2020 01:06

Yeah, I get that, but Smith was still the best bloke.

Blew it wasn't the best description Smile
