‘School Prom’ for 11 year olds - ridiculous or not?

Hello everyone, looking for some perspective.
My child is in year 6 and a group of parents have started to plan a party/prom for later on in the year. They have predicted the party will cost £3000! With a ticket cost of £30 and any shortfall to be made up by fundraising at our school. Selling ice creams to other children when the weather improves. It has been suggested that this prom should be very special and ‘a coming of age event’. The parents are trying to organise a disco with sit down meal for 75 children with perhaps a surf simulator at a hotel. Any criticism of, or suggestions for the event have been met with passive aggressive retorts i.e ‘well, what would your sons idea of a good evening be’. Do you think this event and the cost is unreasonable or is this event similar to anything your child has attended when leaving school? Thanks in advance

Ridiculous.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 06/02/2020 10:39

Wow. Its nice to have a party at the end of year 6, but £3000 and a sit down meal?! No.

livingthegoodlife · 06/02/2020 10:40

Crazy. What's wrong with a disco in the school hall? Not sure the kids themselves are going to be keen for a sit down meal?!

Comefromaway · 06/02/2020 10:40

Totally over the top. 11 year olds don't want a sit down meal. Far better to hire a hall and have a slightly posher than usual school disco with a simple buffet of kids party food.

FloopDeLaPoop · 06/02/2020 10:40

School prom is OK for year six/P7 but a sit down dinner is ridiculous. My daughter had a disco and sweets. Can't remember the cost, If there was one - it may have been covered by the PTA, lasted about two hours and was just enough.

x2boys · 06/02/2020 10:40

Ridiculous ,my son had a leavers meal paid for by the school when he left primary school ,they also had a school trip in the same week they did water sport type activities .

Stressedout10 · 06/02/2020 10:41

No way would I spend £30 on a school party for primary school nor would I be taking part in any fundraising

olllsss · 06/02/2020 10:42

They are 11 year olds! I'd rather pay for them to enjoy a day at a theme park or hire rides at a all day party or something simliar. But a prom and sit down meal?! joke.

CameFromAway · 06/02/2020 10:42

New name for a leavers’ disco.

Bit the price is outrageous, YANBU.

AngelicInnocent · 06/02/2020 10:44

Nope. We had a red carpet, disco and a 'cocktail' bar. Food they had hot dogs or veggie equivalent. Dress code was party clothes, no trackies etc.

They had a brilliant time, cost us 7.50 per child and one of the teachers got photos of each child and lots of groups and you could get a booklet of them for 2.50 if you wanted.

Emmelina · 06/02/2020 10:45

Can’t they just have a disco in the hall? My eldest just had that last summer. Other local schools had a themed prom, and the girls all wore fancy dresses and hair and make up. Just why? I can understand it when they leave school properly.

Keeponkeepigon · 06/02/2020 10:46

Thanks everyone. A buffet has also been suggested but a few parents are definitely pushing the meal idea. The school organise a lovely assembly and a trip for the children but this an extra on top of that! I thought it seemed excessive and not age appropriate but wasn’t sure as this is my first primary school leaver.

There's nothing wrong with a leavers' party. We hired a hall, parents brought the food (had way too much) and a DJ. Kids had a lot of fun and I think parents contributed about £20 to costs, but this also included a yearbook. The kids would have been too excited for a sit down dinner.

Vinorosso74 · 06/02/2020 10:46

That is crazy! I don't imagine the majority of 11 year olds would want a sit down meal.
DD's school have a leavers disco in the school hall. No idea on costs but you can't charge £30 for a ticket as it wipes out the kids whose families can't afford it.

AnnPerkins · 06/02/2020 10:50

A sit down meal? Hilarious! Grin

No need to criticise, just let them crack on. When offered say your child isn't interested. It will fizzle out due to lack of interest, or they will scale their ideas back to something a little more realistic.

Spanglybangles · 06/02/2020 10:54

Crazy. My dd had a leavers “prom” at the end of primary. It was in school hall, most dressed in party dresses/suits, bit of hair and makeup, had a disco, local takeaway delivered loads of pizzas and they had an ice cream stand and sweetie cart I think. Cost covered by PTA iirc.

Parents arrived near end and sat on chairs around the hall with their child stood next to them. There was a PowerPoint presentation of the kids talking about their favourite memories of their time in primary school, then award certificates handed out to each child decided by their peers describing them eg. Cat lover award, songwriters award, great dancer award etc.

It was a lovely age appropriate evening. Save the over the top stuff for end of secondary prom.

cologne4711 · 06/02/2020 10:55

£30 a ticket? Blimey. Hope nobody has twins!

Yes, ridiculous and you are not being u.

What about a Leaver's disco for £5?

sashh · 06/02/2020 10:56

Ridiculous.

A few lights for a disco fair enough, but a sit down meal. What 11 year old wants to do that?

Keeponkeepigon · 06/02/2020 11:02

Really appreciate all the response and the lovely ideas. As the event required such a large contribution from the parents someone suggested we should ask the children want they would like to do. But this was quickly shot down. Sadly I think this has become what the parents want. I know my child won’t enjoy it.

Maybe give the children a few options.

'Prom' or bouncy castle, or a trip to the zoo.

Spanglybangles

That sounds perfect.

dayowl · 06/02/2020 11:20

That’s outrageous!

Igotthemheavyboobs · 06/02/2020 11:25

Bloody heck! I loved our year 6 disco. Good music, a couple of cups of pop and a shitty (my fave kind) buffet! All held in the school lunch hall. Probably cost £2 a ticket if that.

LettertoHermoine · 06/02/2020 11:30

God WAY over the top!

SVRT19674 · 06/02/2020 11:32

A coming of age event at 11? hahahahaha. It makes you wonder if the parents organising this went without as kids and are projecting...

RowenaRavenclawTheSecond · 06/02/2020 11:35

Sounds ridiculous!

What are the school saying about it? Are they aware?
